Recap / Sabrina The Teenage Witch S 1 E 23 The Crucible

Go To

Sabrina's history class are to spend the weekend in Salem village, roleplaying Puritan life. Initially nervous about going, Sabrina's fears aren't helped when the students are given cards: most saying 'townsperson' but some possibly saying 'witch'.

Tropes:

  • Black Vikings: In-universe. Mrs Hecht the history teacher is Black, and of course holds a position of authority when roleplaying Puritan Salem.
  • Cassandra Truth: Sabrina bewitches Libby so that she sees a monkey on her shoulder that no one else can see.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jenny early on puts her gum in her card and throws it in the bin. The card said 'townsperson', but her having thrown it away means she can't prove it didn't say 'witch'.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Mr Pool says there will be no secrets from the court, Sabrina says to "ask Jill if that's her real nose"; referencing that Jill was revealed to have had a rhinoplasty in "Bundt Friday".
    • Sabrina says if she were a witch, she'd change her clothes a lot, turn Libby into a goat or "make a giant flan". All things she did in "Sabrina Through the Looking Glass".
  • Costumer: An episode dedicated to getting the cast dressed like New England Puritan
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Discussed. Mr Pool remarks that it would be normal for Puritan girls to be married and have children at sixteen. Libby naturally is repulsed.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Jenny and Adam speaking alone is treated as though they were up to something in the woods.
Libby: She was with Adam. Unescorted.
    Mr Pool: How unseemly.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Part of Libby's accusations against Jenny were that her spectre braided her hair "to make me look dorky".
  • Irony: Jenny and Sabrina are both accused of being witches. The court believes Jenny to be one, but let Sabrina off.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: When Sabrina feigns being sick, Hilda turns her into an Indian fakir. Because she's a 'faker'.
  • Salem Is Witch Country: Subverted. The aunts say that none of the Salem witch trials ever got a real witch.
  • Sarcastic Confession: When Sabrina has to take the stand in her trial, she confesses to being a witch. No one believes her.
  • Shock and Awe: Sabrina accidentally throws a stream of magic sparks at Libby. Mr Pool calls it 'ball lightning', and thankfully no one suspects Sabrina is responsible.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: While it is named after The Crucible, it's not a full reference to the play. It does however feature Libby in the Abigail role of accusing a romantic rival of witchcraft.
  • Witch Hunt: The plot of the episode. When re-enacting Puritan life, Libby accuses Jenny of being a witch and later Sabrina.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Harvey tries to prove Sabrina isn't a witch by demonstrating that she doesn't melt when water is thrown on her.
  • Ye Olde Butchered English: The characters will sometimes add 'ye' or archaic words to their sentences to enhance the roleplay.
