Recap / Recess S 4 E 45 Old Folks Home

Go To

At Mikey's insistence, the group spends a day with senior citizens.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Just because they're old doesn't mean the elderly are boring. If you take the time to talk to them, you might just realize they're more interesting than you think and make some new friends.
  • Cool Old Guy: All of the residents of the home the gang visit turn out to be this.
    • Gretchen finds a wheelchair-bound man who remains silent until she starts talking science, at which point she realizes she's found an intellectual equal who worked on the Manhattan Project.
    • Gus gets intimidated by a huge old man, who just wants to show him a photo of himself as a child, which reveals he was identical to Gus as a child and tells the little guy that since his dad is tall then he's likely to be huge himself one day.
    • Vince finds man a who bores him with a slow game of dominoes, who tells the young sports star that it helps with concentration. Which is important if you're playing major league baseball like he did when he was young.
    • Spinelli is waiting out the minutes helping an older woman knit...right up until she realizes the woman is knitting boxing gloves, and used to be a merchant marine.
    • TJ tells the old man he is paired with about Señor Fusion. The old man says the name is familiar. Then proceeds to draw the character perfectly and reveal he's the original comic creator of TJ's favourite superhero, on top of being an older version of himself.
    • Mikey is the only one not having a good time despite being the only one to want to come since he assumes the elderly want to hear safe, old-timey songs. Once he starts taking requests, the music becomes much more upbeat, and the seniors start rocking out.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Mikey is upset that the residents don't like the songs he is singing and is ready to storm out when Gretchen asks if he asked them what songs they want to hear. Mikey sheepishly realizes he missed the obvious solution to the problem.
  • Dance Party Ending: The episode ends with Mikey performing "Que Simpatico" for the retirees and the Recess Gang, who all dance and laugh along with the music.
  • Generation Xerox: Each member of the Recess Gang (save Mikey) ends up finding a senior citizen who perfectly matches their personality: Gretchen ends up with a scientist, Gus with a man who knows how it feels to be insecure about height, T.J. with a prankster and comic book creator, Vince with a former pro athlete, and Spinelli with a tough-talking boxer and former merchant marine.
  • Gentle Giant: The old man that Gus hangs out with, who shows that he used to look exactly like him.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Spinelli pairs off with an older woman who seems like a Granny Classic, given that she's spending the day knitting. Then the woman reveals what she's making: the lining of a boxing glove. Turns out that she's an avid boxer (the only reason she knits is to keep her arm strength) and a former merchant marine to boot!
  • Poor Communication Kills: Mikey gets booed off the stage for singing songs like "Camptown Races." When Mikey wants to go home as a result, his friends point out that he failed to take requests.
  • Shout-Out: Mr. Rogan's flashback has similar character designs to Hogan's Heroes. Appropriate, as Recess is essentially a kid's version of Hogan's Heroes.
  • Shown Their Work: Streak, the old man Vince bonds with at the retirement home, talks about his days in pro baseball: "Used to bat cleanup, back when Birmingham had a team." He's talking about the Birmingham Black Barons, a real team from the Negro-American League and its predecessors. Streak also mentions that he played against Satchel Paige and Willie Mays, who actually were members of that League.
  • Take a Third Option: Mikey wants the Recess Gang to volunteer at a retirement community, but T.J. reveals that he's instead planning to take them all to the Señor Fusion Fest at the local mall. They're divided as to what to do until Gretchen points out that they can volunteer for an hour and then go to the Fest. Ultimately, though, the kids have so much fun at the retirement home that they skip the convention and spend the whole day there.
