Combat training sees Team CRDL take on Pyrrha Nikos while the villains take an interest in her abilities. Meanwhile, Jaune struggles to convince Weiss to take his feelings seriously. And on top of that, Blake is becoming increasingly tired.
Tropes in this episode include:
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Pyrrha devastates all four members of Team CRDL by herself, taking no serious damage during the entire match, and has enough energy to start sparring against Mercury.
- Exhausted Eyebags: Blake is still stressing out over the situation with Torchwick and the White Fang, leading to sleep deprivation. She develops very noticeable bags under her eyes as a result.
- Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Ruby and Yang are leaning in from off-screen to watch Jaune serenade Weiss. Both are at an impossible angle. Ruby notices this near the end of the scene and promptly falls over.
- Laser-Guided Karma: After all the bullying he did to Jaune back in Volume 1, Cardin gets an impromptu comeuppeance when Pyrrha utterly stomps his team in a sparring match without them doing so much as scratching her.
- Puff of Logic: When Jaune comes by Team RWBY's dorm to ask Weiss out to the dance, Ruby leans in to watch while standing at an angle where it should be impossible to keep her balance. She falls over once she looks down and realizes what she's doing.
- Serenade Your Lover: Jaune attempts to ask Weiss to the dance via guitar and song. She just shuts the door on his face.
- Sore Loser: After his team gets completely demolished by Pyrrha and she personally gives him a serious beatdown full of wrestling moves, the best Cardin can muster is uttering a feeble "Lucky shot..." before passing out.
- Tell Me How You Fight: After his match with Pyrrha, Mercury is able to deduce her Semblance and how she uses it.
