That moment when Pokémon intersects with Jaws...

Lana takes Ash to Brooklet Hill, which is famous for its Wishiwashi, a small fish Pokémon with a gigantic ability. What comes next is a titanic battle where Lana's fishing expertise will be tested to its limits.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adapted Out: The Totem Wishiwashi's Solo Wishiwashi ally isn't present.
  • Blue with Shock: Pikachu after being chased by Wishiwashi, though it's more likely because he's gasping for breath.
    • Also the Master Fisherman when Lana manages to hook a Feebas.
  • Consummate Liar: The "Master Fisherman" brags about his long fishing career, shows off scars that turn out to be fake, says he fished for forty years, then fifty years, sixty years, seventy years, eighty years, and finally 99 years, two months.
    • Also, Lana Played for Laughs about how she caught a Mega Gyarados to get Waterium Z.
  • Determinator: Lana refuses to back down on fishing the Totem Wishiwshi and even inspired Popplio to not give up either.
  • End-of-Episode Silliness: Inverted: In the Cold Open, Team Rocket is fishing at Brooklet Hill. Jessie ends up hooking Bewear! It grabs them, and swims across Brooklet Hill so fast that it blasts off!!!
  • I Am Legion: What School Forme Wishiwashi runs on.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: The Master Fisherman (correctly) states that catching a Feebas is incredibly difficult, only for Lana to walk into frame with one dangling from her line, having somehow managed to catch the damn fish in the space of 20 seconds. His reaction was shared by more than one viewer.
  • Irony: Feebas are infamously hard to catch in the games (either being behind very intricate mechanics or having ridiculously low encounter rates) but Lana catches one in an instant.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: When Lana denies she's taking Ash on a fishing date. No Hugging, No Kissing, after all.
  • Meaningful Titles: The English title uses Wishiwashi's category name.
  • More than Meets the Eye: A Solo Forme Wishiwashi is nothing. Woe betide anyone who meets its School Forme.
  • Moving The Goal Posts: The Fisherman tells Ash and Lana that they can only fish for the Totem Pokémon with his permission, (it never establishes if he actually has that authority or if he states it and nobody questions it.) He states that they will have to catch a Feebas, and when Lana does so, he further states that they can only fish for the Totem Pokémon with a boat, which says he "might consider lending you a boat, but the rental fees are expensive."
  • Oh, Crap!: When Pikachu ends up in the water and being chased by School Form Wishiwashi, he gets a look of abject terror we've never seen from him before.
  • Shout-Out: Popplio holds Pikachu in a pose at the front of their boat that is reminiscent of Titanic.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Popplio learns Aqua Jet. And Lana gets Waterium Z, after which Olivia presents her with a Z-Ring made from the Shimmering Stone she found in the previous episode.
