Marowak wanted the power of the Wela Crown all for himself.

At the Wela Volcano Festival, a wild Alolan Marowak decides to steal the Wela Crown. Kiawe and Turtonator will need to step their game up to be able to take it back.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: To Kiawe's surprise, Marowak offers to be caught after being defeated by Turtonator, marking his first onscreen capture.
  • Foreshadowing: When the team give chase to Marowak, Litten and Pikachu are able to follow Ash while Kiawe has to recall Turtonator to keep up, as a subtle sign to his Mighty Glacier weakness.
  • Identical Twins: There's Hiker David, and three more identical Hikers.
  • Limit Break: Marowak looks like he's getting nuked when he's hit by Turtonator's Inferno Overdrive.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Hiker David does what he's known for in the games: photobombing.
    • When Turtonator uses Shell Smash, the blue and orange effects from the game appear to signify a stat change.
  • Production Foreshadowing: This is the closest the anime will have to adapting the Wela Volcano trial, but the Pokèmon of interest is an Alolan Marowak instead of Totem Salazzle. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Marowak replaces Salazzle as the resident Totem of Wela Volcano Park.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Turtonator learns Shell Smash, which cuts his Defensive stats in favor for a massive speed boost. He then suddenly appears right in front of Marowak.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: When Marowak is first called after being caught by Kiawe, the moment he notices Turtonator, he starts headbutting him. Marowak gets stuck in Turtonator's shell.
