Recap / Murdoch Mysteries S 4 E 13 Murdoch In Wonderland

Go To

During a Alice in Wonderland themed party, Murdoch is drugged and wakes up to be accused of murder.

Tropes:

  • Alice Allusion: The characters go to a costume party to honour the late Lewis Carroll. Detective Murdoch is dressed as the Mad Hatter and Dr Julia Ogden is Alice. The party guests play croquet, drink "potion" from flasks and together write a non-sense mirror-flipped poem. Murdoch gets drugged and has disturbing visions of falling down a hole and being too big to enter a door.
  • Asshole Victim: The victim is a particularly heinous person.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Inspector Giles says they are servants of the law, not arbiters of justice.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Murdoch is drugged by the party.
  • One of Our Own: Murdoch is arrested for the murder of a rapist.
  • Police Brutality: Murdoch is on the other end of it this episode.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Murdoch is drugged during the Alice in Wonderland episode.
  • Physical Scars, Psychological Scars: Constance Gardner was raped and disfigured by the victim. She killed him.
  • Rape as Backstory: Constance Gardner suffered this.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: The victim is guilty of this and numerous other horrors.
  • Revenge: The killer's well justified motive.
  • The Joy of X: The episode is called "Murdoch in Wonderland", using the pattern "X in Wonderland".
  • Themed Party: The characters attend an Alice in Wonderland-themed party, supposedly to honour the recently deceased Lewis Carroll. It's actually a plot to get some characters on the same spot to start a revenge and some costumes are worn to disguise identity. Detective Murdoch is dressed as the Mad Hatter and Dr Julia Ogden is Alice. (They have the most prominent costumes for the party, despite the fact that they are not especially close to the hosts and Murdoch wasn't even supposed to attend.)
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Murdoch chooses to be good, unsurprisingly.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Inspector Giles tells Murdoch that they're not deciders of justice. This causes Murdoch to release her prisoner.
