  • Ace Pilot: Phryne is revealed to be one in the Cold Open, when Charles tries to sell her his plane.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: An interesting variation where Nerine sings to her husband Ben who was in prison, her only way to assure him that she has always loved him and still does.
  • Asshole Victim: Leonard Stevens, serial blackmailer and rapist - what's not to hate?
  • Dark Secret: The episode revolves around people's dark secrets, how the victim knew about them and took advantage of them and the lengths the blackmailed would go to keep those secrets hidden.
    • Charlie was in a relationship with his male friend.
    • Charlie's mother knew her other son Vic was alive but refused to see his family.
    • Nerine was already married when she met Ben.
  • Imaginary Love Triangle: This was revealed to be the case with Nerine and Ben. Ben had discovered Nerine was sleeping with the victim, not knowing that she was being blackmailed into it.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Nerine and Ben, who can legally marry in Australia but not in her native USA due to miscegenation laws. Shame she couldn't get a divorce from the abusive arranged husband she left behind in Virginia.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: What Ben thought he was offing Leonard for, thanks to a bit of Poor Communication Kills with Nerine.
  • New Old Flame: The deceased Vic was implied to be an old flame of Phryne's. It turns out he is alive and him and Phryne briefly rekindle their relationship.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Charlie decided to return back to Melbourne, despite not being the murderer, the fact that they did evade the police for being a prime suspect and for their homosexuality would mean they would still be arrested. They did this so that their lover would not go through prison alone.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Vic, who was revealed to be alive all this time is implied to be this, choosing to live away from society and refusing to return to their family.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Jack gives the blackmail material to Phryne because as a police officer, he would be legally obligated to prosecute Charlie for homosexuality (a crime at this point in history), but she's not bound by any strictures other than her own conscience.
