Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E3 The Mutiny Part 3

Go To

The only hope of regaining control of the Dinozords from Pirahntishead is Billy's latest invention. If they can get it to work, Zordon will then infuse each of the main five Dinozords with a lightning charge, causing them to morph into the mighty new Thunderzords! The Black Lion, the Pink Firebird, the Blue Unicorn, the Yellow Griffin, and the Red Dragon can then come together to form the Thunder Megazord. But will it be enough to defeat the power of Lord Zedd's Pirahntishead? Meanwhile, Bulk & Skull, saved by the Rangers for the umpteenth time, begin their quest to discover the secret identities of the Power Rangers!

Tropes

  • Big "NO!":
    • Zedd over the Rangers regaining control of the old Zords.
    • Jason, as the old Zords are being destroyed.
  • Big "YES!": Goldar when Lord Zedd destroys the Dinozords.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Rangers win the day and have their new Zords to defend the world, but Tommy's powers are too weak to support a new Zord and the Dragonzord must now conserve its remaining power, as well.
  • The Cameo: After Pirahntishead is destroyed, Finster makes a brief appearance to note how this never would've happened had they used one of his monsters. We wouldn't see Finster again until towards the end of the season.
  • Defiant to the End: Upon losing his weapon and seeing the Thunder Megazord gearing up for the finisher, Pirahntishead vows to tear the Rangers apart with his bare fins.
  • Evolving Credits: A brand new intro debuts here, featuring Zedd & the Thunderzords.
  • Friendship Moment: As Tommy takes a dim view of his weakening powers, the others assure him he'll always be part of the team and refuse to let him give up hope.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: The full-grown Pirahntishead is hungry and sees the Rangers as lunch.
  • Hypocrite:
    • In his cameo, Finster scoffs at Zedd's rage, saying if they'd used one of his monsters, the plan would have succeeded. This despite the fact that Pirantishead did some genuine damage to the heroes throughout the three-parter and none of Finster's creations ever approached that level of victory (Lokar excluded, but he wasn't a Finster original).
    • Zedd taking his failure out on Goldar and the others is this when in Part I, Goldar volunteered to go down and fight the rangers only for his boss to laugh him off as being useless as the original putties.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: The first time a different version of the theme song plays during the Zord battle from then on.
  • Make My Monster Grow: The first time to show how Zedd does it: throwing a grenade of sorts, which is caught by the given monster and then slammed into the groundnote .
  • Near-Villain Victory: Zedd was this close to winning. Knowing that makes him even angrier about losing.
  • Never My Fault:
Goldar: I'm sorry you failed, Excellency.
Lord Zedd: I DIDN'T FAIL, YOU SIMPERING TWIT! YOU FAILED! YOU ALL FAILED! JUST LIKE YOU FAILED BEFORE!
  • No Ontological Inertia: Averted with Pirantishead's spell on Bulk and Skull's four-wheelers, which still causes them to drive backwards out of control even after it's destroyed. The Rangers need to use their signal blocker in order for them stop.
  • No-Sell:
    • Downplayed. Pirahntishead isn't destroyed by the Power Blaster, but it still left him in pain and sparking. He's out of the action, until Zedd tosses him a grenade.
    • Played straight when Pirahntishead learns the hard way that he can't control the Thunder Megazord the way he did the Dino Zords.
  • Not So Above It All: Zordon's unforgettable reaction to seeing what's become of Rita (stuck in a tiny dumpster and singing "Ninety-nine bottles of slime on the wall" to pass the time). Zordon proceeds to mock-sing it and laugh at her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Pirahntishead when the Rangers reveal they formed the Power Blaster to use on him, not the old Zords.
  • Plot Twist: Upon regaining control of the Dinozords, it appears that the Dinozords are completely destroyed and Angel Grove is doomed when Lord Zeddd sinks them into a lava fissure and enlarges Pirahntishead. However Alpha 5 is able to restore the Dinozords by recalibrating the morphin' grid and returning them to their hiding places thus finally paving the way for the thunderzord upgrade to win.
  • Secret Chaser: At the end of the episode, Bulk and Skull decide to make it a personal goal of theirs to find out the Power Ranger's secret identities.
  • Silence, You Fool!: During Zedd's tantrum over losing:
Baboo: Uh, did we do something wrong?
    Lord Zedd: SILENCE!
  • Something We Forgot: When it's all over, Tommy asks what the Rangers never had time to consider until now: "Whatever happened to Rita?"
  • This Cannot Be!: Zedd's reaction to the Rangers regaining control of the old Zords.
"NOOOO! This can't be! I will not tolerate being outsmarted by those Power Rangers!"
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After Pirahntishead catches Zedd's grenade.
Jason: I think our problems are about to get bigger.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Zedd believes the Rangers are nothing without their Zords.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Despite how massive the Dinozords are, when they blast at the racers they confusingly ask "What was that?" as if they couldn't see them. Especially egregious considering the quakes the zords' footsteps make long before they're usually seen.
  • Villain Respect: When the Rangers form the Thunder Megazord, Zedd is admittedly impressed by Zordon's surprises.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: The Rangers spend an episode and a half trying to regain control of their Zords. Mere moments after they finally succeed, an enraged Zedd sends the Zords plummeting into Earth's depths, effectively destroying them.
