Go To

Season 1, Episode 7: Satan's Lot

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Afterlife Antechamber: Biggleheim is a "hub of the souls trade" where souls go to decide what afterlife they want to spend eternity in. Satan was banished and had his soul-collecting license revoked for his anarchistic mischief.
  • Angelic Abomination: The show takes the "Biblically accurate" route with the angel's designs, having somewhat humanoid figures, but with multiple eyes placed everywhere across their body.
  • Auto-Tune: The Angels' voices tend to fluctuate.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Satan says that "Gods" are something humans made up. Instead, there are primordial beings of unfathomable powers within the Metaphysical Realm that create and curate human afterlives which... sounds pretty godlike.
  • A Hell of a Time: Having been kicked out of Hell, Satan keeps his power up by making deals for souls with mortals, keeping them all in his "soul hole." There, the souls live out their hearts desire as freedom without limits. The only problem is that "without limits" means that souls that want to kill people are allowed to kill other souls, letting them regenerate later to be killed again. Chrissy calls this out for the loaded deal that it is, even if she comes to see that it isn't the worst option to have.
  • Ghost Ship: New souls Satan claims come by boat.
  • Hell of a Heaven: While Thumb Realm seems nice and serene on the surface, Chrissy finds that it isn't actually ideal. For one, you're turned into a giant thumb, with all of the anatomical difficulties that implies. For another, Happiness Is Mandatory and not providing a sincere love of "thumbness" ends with the soul being flattened into a floating tile for all of eternity.
  • Offscreen Afterlife: Through means and for reasons that have yet to be revealed, Satan has been kicked out of Hell and apparently can't get back.
  • Our Gods Are Different: Primordials are the closest to "gods" that exist, Satan qualifying as one of them.
  • Papa Wolf: When the Angels strike Chrissy down with lightning, Satan — who's chained up and weakened — explodes into a giant Living Shadow and wipes out all of their minions in a fit of rage.
  • Take That!: Chrissy calls Satan's "freedom to hurt people" afterlife system as "messed up libertarian bullshit."
  • Unfinished Business: Apparently Gus's unfinished business actually is an unfinished business: selling his wife's used underwear. Laura buying a pair was enough to make him move on to the afterlife.
  • Vengeful Ghost: Ghosts who spend too much time in the corporeal plane devolve into wraiths; mindless monsters that feed on human misery.
