Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 4 E 2 Samurai Ratso

Go To

While in Japan to find clues about the oni masks' locations, Uncle begins to feel obsolete. But the Chi Wizard may need to snap out of his funk if the Mask of Murasaki is to be obtained.

This episode provides examples of:

  • An Aesop: Sometimes a teacher needs to learn from his student, but that doesn't mean their guidance still isn't needed.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: A scene cuts to the Oni Ratso speaking darkly with an apparent intention to use the Razor Khan for something sinister, only for him to happily reveal that he's using them to play baseball.
Oni Ratso: The best thing about making your own team of ninjas… is making enough for TWO teams!
  • Detect Evil: Tohru inherits Uncle's "willies" when an oni is nearby.
  • Guns Akimbo: Uncle does this with his and Tohru's blowfish on the Shadowkhan.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Uncle insists he only came back because Tohru has the keys to the shop, only to immediately say it's not important after Tohru demonstrates he doesn't have them.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: What makes Uncle think he's The Load. His removal spell fails, Tarakudo himself makes it known he was wrong to say the cards weren't important, and Tohru's onion proves more useful than his garlic in this specific situation.
  • It Only Works Once: At first, Uncle and Tohru create the same mask removal spell they used on Chow in the previous episode, even using a katana for the steel. However the spell dissipates without doing anything, causing them to realize that each mask requires its own spell and their own unique ingredient.
  • The Load: Uncle believes he's only getting in the others' way as he was little to no help against the Oni Ratso, the new Shadowkhan, and the fact brushed off the Hanafuda cards as not important.
  • Manchild: Ratso happily uses his new underlings to play baseball. After being brought back to the rooftop, he excitedly says it's his turn at bat.
  • Mundane Utility: Ratso uses the Razor Khan to play baseball. Hak Foo is outraged that Ratso is using the shadow warriors like this, stating that he would've already conquered the entire Japan with them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jade kicks Ratso, resulting in his face touching the second oni mask. Although downplayed since Hak Foo was about to put it on and as he puts it, would've had all of Japan under his rule by the time Ratso is playing baseball with the Shadowkhan. So better Ratso than Hak Foo.
  • No-Sell:
    • After Tarakudo is revealed to be vulnerable to onions, Jade throws an onion at the Oni Ratso, only for him to catch it and happily eat it. Tohru suggests that even though Ratso is wearing an Oni Mask, he's still physically human and doesn't share the weaknesses of the Oni.
    • In their first encounter with a metal claw Shadowkhan, Uncle shoots at it with the same chi spell he used on the previous Shadowkhan, only for this one to tank it without disappearing. This causes Uncle to realize that he and Tohru must create a new spell powerful enough to take on the new tribes.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Tarakudo has been fairly laidback for a Big Bad and rather complimentary when his minions actually succeed. When he learns the Chans are looking for the cards, he becomes enraged and sets about personally handling the situation.
  • Outside-Context Villain: Uncle doesn't appear to have much knowledge of Japanese dark magic as he told Tohru to use garlic instead of an onion. When Tohru throws it at Tarakudo, he screams in pain. He later realizes how outdated he is against these new foes.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Before Uncle gets on the train, Tohru insists he needs his guidance.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The original owner of the cards flees, upon being confronted by Oni Ratso's Shadowkhan.
  • So Proud of You: Uncle saying Tohru came up with a pretty good stun spell.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Tohru knows tricks for dealing with Oni (namely their weakness to onions) and creates a spell to destroy the metal claw Shadowkhan.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Onis are vulnerable to onions due to their eyes being very sensitive to them, as Tohru proves by throwing an onion at Tarakudo and forcing him to retreat. Uncle creates an onion odor barrier around Section 13 to keep Tarakudo out. However, this weakness doesn’t extend to oni mask-wearing humans.
  • Wolverine Claws: The new Shadowkhan have razor sharp claws.
