Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 14 E 04 The Gang Chokes

Go To

Annoyed that the Gang failed to react as he nearly choked to death on an appetizer, Frank decides the Waiter, his savior, is the only person who has his back. Meanwhile, Dennis tries to get healthy and Dee becomes an adrenaline junkie.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Frank tells the Waiter he "took care" of his mother, a possible reference to Throw Momma from the Train (He didn't try kill her in this case, just threw a sheet over her).
  • Black Comedy: The Gang's total apathy towards watching Frank choke — Charlie is annoyed at being interrupted while trying to make his speech, Mac is unsure of what to do without Dennis' say-so, Dennis himself is completely stone-faced, and Dee is excited. Doubly hilarious and horrific because Charlie is Frank's best friend and Dennis and Dee (and maybe Charlie) are his children.
    • After learning about how he had been poisoning Dennis to make him depend on him, Dee suggests to Mac that he should use actual poison.
    • Dee tells a story about how she was almost hit by an Uber. Mac admits he wishes the Uber did hit Dee.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts and ends at the restaurant, with the waiter being forced to save one of the Gang when the rest can't bring themselves to do so.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: The Waiter tells the Gang he's back at the restaurant to beg for his job back thanks to Frank. Frank responds with "Do I know you?" Frank apparently doesn't even remember the Waiter, despite the fact that he ruined the Waiter's life.
  • Continuity Nod: Charlie gets real uncomfortable when he's left alone with Dee, because "...you know..."
  • Death Glare: After being saved by the Waiter from choking, an utterly infuriated Frank shoots one at the Gang for their apathy towards him almost dying and refusing to save him.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing / Freeze-Frame Bonus: the first establishing shot of the Waiter's house features the window Frank broke to get it.
  • The Food Poisoning Incident: Deliberately invoked: since excess sugar and carbs fucks with Dennis' stomach, Mac had been feeding him blended pizza and soda shakes to make Dennis depend on him.
  • Münchausen Syndrome: Mac is doing Münchausen Syndrome by proxy to Dennis. Dee lampshades it.
  • The Nothing After Death: After drinking the poison and being saved by the Waiter, Dee says that she saw the "other side" and that it was nothing but darkness, which finally kills her Thrill Seeker streak.
  • Pet the Dog: In contrast to their dismissal of her throughout the episode, the guys are legitimately concerned when Dee poisons herself by drinking the shake. Subverted in that Mac refuses to save her as a way of finally saying no to Dennis (who orders him to help her), forcing the Waiter to step in.
  • Prison Rape: One of the ways Frank has told Charlie he doesn't want to die is "getting spit-roasted by two Latin King gang members in prison."
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Dennis got Dee sick and dependent on Frank a while back, so she plots with Mac to do the same with him.
  • Thrill Seeker: Dee becomes an adrenaline junkie after realizing that watching Frank nearly choke to death and almost getting hit by an Uber on the way over to Dennis and Mac's apartment excited her.
