Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 05 E 11 Mac And Charlie Write A Movie

Go To

Dee: Don't involve yourselves in this!
Mac: Dee, you involved us in this the second you walked in here and told us about the movie.

When Dee gets a part in the new M. Night Shyamalan film, Mac and Charlie seize a chance to pitch their movie script. Frank decides to become a talent agent, and Dennis can't seem to put his new smartphone down.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Big Eater: Frank has several sausage links in his shirt pocket that he sporadically snacks on throughout the episode, including the final shot of the episode where he's supposed to be playing a corpse.
  • Blood Is the New Black: Dee gets absolutely covered from head to toe in fake blood in order to play the part of a dead body.
  • Brick Joke: The episode opens with Mac and Charlie telling Dennis a story about how they got locked in a garage stairwell. At the end of the episode, Dennis reveals that while the others thought he was playing on his phone, he's secretly been working on turning their story into a movie script all along.
  • Call-Back: Mac states that Dennis is good at coming up with big words.
  • Career Resurrection: In-Universe. Charlie and Mac want to write a movie that will do this for Dolph Lundgren.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Charlie thinks that the Twist Ending of The Sixth Sense is that the "guy in the hairpiece" was Bruce Willis all along.
  • The Danza: Discussed In-Universe; Charlie wants to call their lead character in the movie Dolph Lundgren, but Mac insists that it would be too confusing.
  • Global Ignorance: Mac and Charlie seem to have no idea where Pakistan is.
Charlie: Pakistan, now that's... a country somewhere.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Mac doesn't want to add a female lead to the movie because he hates women and thinks that they slow down action movies.
  • Incestuous Casting: In-Universe, Dennis and Dee end up playing dead bodies who were husband and wife in the Shyamalan movie.
  • The Living Dead: Dee, Dennis and Frank all agree to play the part of a corpse in the M.Night movie: Dee can't naturally stop herself from posing at the camera or playing a zombie even though she's just supposed lay still face down, while Dennis keeps ruining the shot by Mac and Charlie calling him about their own movie idea, and when both of them are fired and Frank takes their place, he keeps taking bites from the sausage links in his pocket.
  • The Nose Knows: A freak lab accident leaves the protagonist of Mac and Charlie's movie with the ability to smell crime before it happens. Their tagline is "he nose the truth."
  • Shout-Out:
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Dee gets very pleased with herself when she thinks she's landed a major role in the movie, until she finds out that she's actually just an extra. Even then she still acts like a diva.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Mac and Charlie think that Dolph Lundgren is the most underrated actor in all of Hollywood.
  • Stylistic Suck: Mac and Charlie's ideas for their film.
  • Twist Ending: As it's a Shyamalan movie, the gang spends a great deal of time discussing the art of the twist ending.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Dennis telling Dee that he's going to cast her as the lead in his movie, only to cruelly take it back a moment later.
Dennis: You know normally, Dee, I would take this opportunity to insult you, but I'm gonna throw an insane twist your way: you're gonna be the lead of the film!
    Dee: I am? Really?!
Dennis: No, you're not! Boom, twisted again! Try and keep up.
