Robin, Ted, and Barney go to a hot new club, leaving an engaged Marshall and Lily to a more adult, boring evening of wine tasting.
This episode provides examples of:
- Acoustic License: Averted. The gang goes out to a nightclub, and while on the dance floor no one can hear each other, except when there's a momentary lull in the music.
- Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: "I'm from outer space", "I got thrown out of SeaWorld for humping a dolphin", "I'm wetting my pants". The first two could qualify for Refuge in Audacity. The third just freaks Kelly out.
- Characterization Marches On: Barney wears a silver shirt to the club. If this had happened later on in the show, he would have worn a suit. Presumably his love of suits hadn't yet been fully established.
- I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: Lily and Robin flash their boobs to a bouncer so he'll let them in, also showing a small amount of cleavage to a couple of nerds in the line (Lucky guys!).
- No Indoor Voice: After clubbing for a while, Ted, Marshall and Barney were having a conversation shouting inside the cab, startling the driver every time.
- Noodle Incident: Ted doesn't know what happened to Marshall after he went to the bathroom looking for some kind of pain killer for his tooth, but after some unspecified time lapse, Marshall comes out of the bathroom with no pain, completely energized, and suspiciously happy.
- Not Listening to Me, Are You? / Seven Minute Lull: A variation. The music is so loud in the club, Ted realizes he can say whatever he wants and Kelly will just smile and nod. Of course the music turns off just as he says "I'm wetting my pants".
- Not on the List: Robin is on the list for the club but not for the VIP room. When she goes outside to make a call to try and get access to the room the bouncer won't let her back into the club because she's already been crossed off. Luckily Lily arrives and comes up with another way to get them both inside.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Robin briefly develops this and lampshades it. "I get recognized once and all of a sudden I think I'm Julia Roberts".
- Surprise Incest: The girl Barney has been grinding on all night turns out to be his cousin. Thankfully he only dances with her before he finds out.
- That Came Out Wrong: "I'd take a P in the gutter over Julia Roberts any day".
- Wine Is Classy: Lily attempts to do a wine tasting party since she is engaged and feels that her coworkers are more mature than her. Neither she or Marshall feel comfortable with it, escape their own party and go clubbing.
