Felipe Strikes Out

When Turner performs a speedy fix at a bowling alley, news reporter Dwayne Bouffant is impressed- but a bit confused, as he believes Felipe was the one responsible for the repair.

”Felipe Strikes Out” contains examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Dwayne Bouffant, while planning to give Felipe his own TV show (It Makes Sense in Context), decides it should be named “The Felipe Fix-It Hour”. Once he finds out that it was really Turner who did the stunning repair, he suggests giving him a show called “Turner’s Tool Tales”.
  • Aside Glance: Turner does one after Dwayne Bouffant offhandedly dismisses him and his attempt to explain the truth about the repair in the bowling shop.
  • Bowling for Ratings: Manny and the tools go to Mr. Ayala’s bowling alley for its grand opening, and end up having to quickly repair a broken ball return machine.
  • Brick Joke: After having been seen struggling with his bowling ball bag early in the episode, “Lightning Lopart” (apparently, Mr. Lopart’s bowling nickname), dashes into the bowling alley at the end of the episode and manages to get a strike… on the wrong lane.
  • Dissimile:
Pat (talking about bowling): Oh, so it’s just like baseball!
Turner: Except for the bases, bats, gloves, and pitchers, yeah, they’re pretty much the same.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Felipe ends up having to decide whether to live out his dream of having his own TV show or tell Dwanye Bouffant the truth, that it was Turner and not him who made the speedy repair. He picks the “tell the truth” option surprisingly quickly; unfortunately, when he tries to talk to Dwayne he can’t get a word in.
  • Fun with Homophones: Responsible for Pat’s confused idea of what “bowling” is.
Pat: I’m gonna get a cereal bowl! Or a soup bowl!
  • Hyper-Destructive Bouncing Ball: Somehow, Mr. Lopart’s bowling ball acts like one when he tries to demonstrate his bowling skills on the sidewalk in front of his shop, ricocheting around and eventually cracking his store window.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: Felipe agrees with Manny that he’ll straighten out the misunderstanding with Dwayne Bouffant the next time he sees him… and then Dwayne immediately walks into Manny’s shop.
  • In-Universe Camera: There are a few shots from the PoV of Dwayne Bouffant’s news camera.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Mr. Ayala is suddenly the owner of a bowling alley that just had its grand opening.
  • One Side of the Story: Felipe’s attempts to inform Dwayne of the fact that Turner, not him, was the one who fixed the ball return machine keep succumbing to this, as Dwayne refuses to let Felipe get a word in edgewise.
  • Pun-Based Title: On a “strike” in bowling, and the concept of “striking out”, both as in “striking out on one’s one” and “striking out” as in failing.
  • Wrong Assumption: When asked by Dwayne Bouffant about his speedy repair of a ball return machine, Manny says that he “had a great screwdriver helping him out”; Dwayne assumes that Manny is referring to Felipe (and thus wants to interview him) while Manny was actually talking about Turner.

Pat’s Big Idea

Mr. Kumar calls Manny and the tools with a hilarious problem- he managed to wedge a forklift in his back door! Manny can’t figure out how to free it without damaging the doorway, but Pat just might have a solution…

”Pat’s Big Idea” includes the following tropes:

  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Pat’s weird-sounding idea to free a forklift that had become vertically wedged in a doorway by letting some of the air out of the forklift’s tires ends up working perfectly, much to the other tools’ surprise.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Pat when he sees the forklift wedged in Mr. Kumar’s back door.
Pat: I didn’t know Mr. Kumar sold forklifts.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: Somehow, Pat saying “I’m a hammer” for the 300,000th time is inexplicably funny enough to trigger one.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Mr. Lopart manages to get his arm stuck when he reaches through the too-small cat door he made for Fluffy.
  • Human Ladder: At the beginning of the episode, the tools try to form a Tool Ladder in order to reach their paper airplane, which had become stuck on top of a shelving unit.
  • Selective Magnetism: Inexplicably, the horseshoe magnet Pat uses at the beginning of the episode only attracts metal that the open end of the “U” is pointed at; Pat can even touch it without feeling the slightest bit of attraction as long as he does it from behind.
  • Sneeze of Doom: When the tools are trying to reach a high shelf by balancing on top of each other, Pat (who is at the bottom of the stack) sneezes, collapsing the stack and also spilling a jar of fasteners that has been on said high shelf.
  • What Does This Button Do?: Squeeze at one point gets curious as to the functions of the buttons on the forklift’s dashboard, pressing one which causes the tines of the forklift to rise- with Felipe and Rusty on top of them.
