Go To

Original air date: 5/4/2023

Sam, Jay and the ghosts go into detective mode when Sam's podcast editor gives her one last episode to wrap up Alberta's murder; Trevor, Flower and Pete discover an email from a Nigerian prince asking for help.

Tropes:

  • Mystery Episode: Sam has one day to solve who murdered Alberta with help from Jay and the ghosts.
  • 419 Scam: Pete, Trevor and Flower fall for one such scam after Pete, who got an e-mail account made so he could get the Reader's Digest joke of the day, got a message from a "Nigerian prince" and they wired money from Sam and Jay's bank account. It's only after Trevor Googled "Nigerian Prince" that they realize what they did; fortunately, Sam got a fraud alert on her phone and canceled the transaction.
  • All for Nothing: All the time and effort Sam and Jay put into investigating Alberta's murder turn out be a waste of time as Hetty has known since the night Alberta was murdered and no one was ever going to be able to figure out who it was without her directly telling them (see Clueless Mystery below).
  • Bait-and-Switch / Red Herring: It looks like Al Capone killed Alberta as he laced the moonshine with rat poison, but it turns out that he was planning to commit suicide using the moonshine because Alberta rejected him. Theresa, Alberta’s sister, talked him out of it. Then it looks like Theresa killed her sister as she was holding the poisoned moonshine, and the note that came with the bottle was signed with the initial T. However, Hetty confesses that she knew the real killer — her son Thomas, who was in love with Alberta's boyfriend Earl, who refused to break up with her. It turns out that Theresa gave Thomas the poisoned moonshine to dispose of it. Unbeknownst to her, he was heartbroken and decided to give Alberta the poisoned moonshine to get rid of her.
  • Clueless Mystery: Who killed Alberta turns out to be this. Her real killer was Thomas Woodstone, Hetty's son, who was having an affair with Alberta's boyfriend Earl. The series waits until this episode to even establish Thomas (whose name was only ever mentioned in one other episode) was there that night and the only link between him and Earl prior to Hetty's explanation is that was Earl had some sort of argument with him that night. Not only would the idea that Thomas is the T in affair only be wild speculation until direct conformation, but the episode doesn't even give you to ruminate on that sim connection before they start going through leads (none of which point to Thomas directly).
  • Continuity Nod: Alberta mentions that Thorfinn was stupid enough to wear his metal helmet during a thunderstorm in “Viking Funeral”.
  • Here We Go Again!: After almost losing Sam and Jay's money to a 419 scam, Trevor, Flower and Pete vow to not fall for another scam again. Then they see a commercial for reverse mortgages and decide to get one for Sam.
  • Historical Domain Character: Al Capone is featured in the flashbacks of the night Alberta died.
  • The Roaring '20s: The flashbacks are set at the height of the Harlem Renaissance; New Year’s Eve 1928 to be exact.
  • String Theory: Jay sets up a "murder board" to figure out who killed Alberta. He mentions having trouble finding red string for the board.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: After Hetty's confession, Alberta feels betrayed that Hetty, who had been like a sister to her, kept that information to herself for nearly a century, especially since she briefly believed that her own sister Theresa had murdered her.
  • Whodunnit to Me?: The episode is built around this trope as the ghosts who were there when Alberta died, along with Sam and Jay, try to solve Alberta’s murder.
