Recap / Friends S 10 E 4 The One With The Cake

Go To

Rachel is making a big deal about Emma's first birthday party, but everyone else has other things they'd rather be doing.

Tropes

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: After seeing the penis-shaped cake Judy and Jack indicate that it bears a striking resemblance to Jack's genitals. Ross is not amused by this comment.
  • Bathroom Breakout: Defied. After Rachel and Ross leave to change the cake, the others have to stay until they come back. Chandler goes to the bathroom, and then Joey and Phoebe realize there's a window there and rush to stop him. Turns out he really was using the bathroom.
  • Birthday Party Goes Wrong: Emma's first birthday is not going well. Emma sleeps when the guests start arriving, who then become cranky. The cake is not delivered, and later when they go to pick it up, it turns out they made a cake with some erotic images, which is totally inappropriate for a baby. Luckily, it ends up fine with the cake rearranged to resemble a bunny and the six close friends play with the little girl.
  • Blatant Lies: "I never left the apartment" by Joey, although Rachel and Ross saw him re-entering.
  • Bottle Episode: The episode takes place almost entirely in Joey and Rachel's apartment.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Rachel gets pulled over for speeding on her way to the bakery to exchange the cake.
  • Gift of Song: Phoebe has written a song as Emma's birthday gift. It's just as terrible as her other songs.
  • Hidden Depths: Joey manages to deliver a genuinely moving dramatic reading of one of Emma's books. Of course, when that book is Love You Forever, it's guaranteed to make you cry.
  • A Rare Sentence: The bakery got their order mixed up with one from a bachelorette party, so they ended up with a phallic cake instead a of bunny-shaped cake, and they are scrambling to get it fixed.
Ross: Ask them if it would be faster if we cut the baby's face off the penis so we can put it on the bunny. {beat} That was a weird sentence.
  • Take Our Word for It: The audience is never shown the erotic cake.
