Recap / Frasier S 08 E 01 And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon

Go To

Niles and Daphne soon decide to break off their relationships with Mel and Donny respectively in order to be together, though the road to that is paved with complications.

Tropes:

  • Bears Are Bad News: As Niles and Daphne ponder the decision to flee to Canada, Niles' argument against going is Canada has bears.
  • Breach of Promise of Marriage: Gender flipped with Donny suing Daphne for this after she leaves him at the altar. Frasier tries to talk Donny out of the suit but ends up getting sued alongside her.
  • Cake Toppers: Frasier finds Donny sitting in his darkened office with the groom figurine from atop the wedding cake. Donny's taken to calling him "Mr. Chump".
  • Cliffhanger Copout: The previous season finale ended with Daphne and Niles about to flee Daphne's wedding in the RV and start a new life together. The first scene of the first episode starts with them about to go through with that, reaching the end of the driveway, and then realizing that being honest and facing the consequences is still better compared to completely abandoning their lives and fleeing to somewhere like Canada.
  • Faint in Shock: Donny keels over when Daphne tells him she's leaving him for Niles.
Daphne: I just wish I'd broken the news to him in a carpeted room instead of the rock garden.
  • Get Out!: Frasier does this to Niles in their argument, but it falls flat since Niles was already storming out anyway.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Part 1 has Niles and Daphne admit the truth to Mel and Donny, respectively, and face immediate repercussions. Part 2 has the whole family dealing with Mel's vengeful manipulations.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Frasier contacts Donny in an attempt to stop his lawsuit against Daphne, but not only does it ends up with Frasier getting sued as well, it leads to Donny telling Mel about Frasier's role in Daphne and Niles getting together and both Niles and Frasier suffering further, which in turn leads to Daphne and Niles getting angry at Frasier and blaming him for breaking them up with the people they weren't in love with. Things finally improve once Frasier and Martin set up a special romantic date for Daphne and Niles on the apartment's rooftop.
  • Not Listening to Me, Are You?: As Frasier sulks about how he's been maligned by an understandably pissed off Daphne and Niles, Martin just fixes himself a sandwich, knowing full well whatever Frasier declares he won't be able to keep it.
Frasier: Dad, are you listening to me?
Martin: Well, I tried not to, but some of it got through.
  • Not so Dire: As the episode begins, Niles' phone keeps going off, which he and Daphne assume is everyone wondering where they are. When he finally answers it... it turns out to be a wrong number.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Things aren't going terribly well for Daphne, but she goes volcanic when Niles is foolish enough to say Mel's got a point.
    Frasier: He came so close...
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When the brothers Crane get their hams on.
    Frasier: Well. I. Never!
    Niles: No! You! Always!
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Watching Niles and Mel's fake reception, Frasier makes the mistake of asking Martin if he's ever seen a bigger sham. Martin replies "what about you and Lilith?"
  • Runaway Bride: Subverted when Daphne decides that she and Niles should go back and break up with Donny and Mel face-to-face rather than running off and leaving everyone wondering what happened.
  • The Scream: Mel's reaction to Niles ending their marriage is a high-pitched scream that leaves him looking around awkwardly in case the other guests notice.
  • Secret Relationship: Niles and Daphne are forced to have one due to Mel forbidding them from being seen in public as part of her deal.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Zig-Zagged with Donny. He's still dressed in the tuxedo he was wearing when Daphne left him at the altar several days earlier and he hasn't changed since.
  • Silent Treatment: Furious when Niles and Daphne turn on him for unwittingly ruining their relationships, which as he rightly points out were already unhappy shams, Frasier decides he is done intervening and refuses to talk to them. As Martin predicts, this doesn't last long at all, but he holds just long enough to get the point across to Daphne.
  • Stealth Insult: Upset with how Mel's emotionally torturing the Cranes in exchange for a supposedly-smooth divorce, such as by making Niles attend his wedding reception with Mel and making Frasier give the toast, Frasier makes sure to give said toast to "my brother and the love of his life", honoring Daphne without actually namedropping her and making those not in the know think he's referring to Mel.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Donny and Mel are realistically angry about Daphne and Niles ending their relationships so abruptly. Instead of being placid Disposable Fiances, the other characters acknowledge that they have every right to be upset about the chain of events.
  • Woman Scorned: Mel promises Niles a quick divorce if he first agrees to spend some time acting like everything's fine in public so she won't lose face in front of her high society friends. After learning about Frasier's interference from Donny, and then Frasier's veiled references to Daphne during his reception toast, she becomes a lot less amiable and adds a further demand that Niles and Daphne not be seen in public together.
