Recap / Frasier S 02 E 17 Daphnes Room

Go To

Frasier's relationship with Daphne becomes strained due to him entering her bedroom for the first time since she's moved in.

Tropes:

  • Cool Car: Frasier eventually resorts to offering to buy Daphne a new car to make up for the repeated violations of her privacy. She's drawn to a convertible Mustang, and when Frasier tries to talk her into something less fancy she points out the Mercedes dealership across the street.
  • Death Glare: Daphne levels one at Frasier when he tries to apologize for entering her room. Frasier notes it's even more unsettling than Eddie's.
  • Forgotten Birthday: Last Sunday was Maris’s 40th birthday and she asked Niles not to acknowledge it in any way.
Niles: …and in a moment I live over and over in my dreams, I believed her.
Frasier: What, no gifts? No party? No nothing?
Niles: Say that weeping into an ermine lap robe and you've got her down perfectly.
  • History with Celebrity: Frasier is sure his eyes are playing tricks on him when he wanders into Daphne's bedroom and sees a photo taped to the corner of her mirror, showing her sitting on a rock... with Prince Charles.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Niles brightly hatches the idea to throw Maris a Louis XIV-themed birthday party, complete with wigs and crushed velvet pantaloons, then just as brightly asks Frasier and Martin:
Niles: May I presume you're both coming down with colds?
    [They both cough loudly.]
    Niles: And so it goes.
  • Lingerie Scene: Daphne, unaware Frasier is hiding in her closet, starts stripping to take a shower. Frasier sees her in her underwear through the slats in the closet door and is mortified.
  • Manchild: Niles acts immature when Frasier makes an ego-blowing comment that tries to differentiate his attempts to bribe Daphne into staying with Niles's attempts to have Maris do the same thing and does so by jumping back and forth in and out of Daphne's room. Frasier even calls him a child.
  • Minimalist Cast: This is the only episode of the entire series to feature only the five regulars. Apart from a waitress at the Cafe whose hand Niles kisses, and a silent salesman at the car dealership at the end there are no guest characters and no guest callers.
  • Oh, Crap!: Niles makes fun of Frasier for being "afraid" of Daphne, and mocks him by dancing back and forth over her bedroom's threshold. Then he knocks over her jewelry tree, and Frasier tells him that she's threatened to quit if she catches anyone in her bedroom again, and Niles will never see her again. Niles's Big "WHAT?!" is unfortunately accompanied by him spilling sherry on her bedspread.
  • Panty Thief: At the end, when Daphne comes into her room and sees Frasier, Niles and Martin all in there, Eddie is sitting on an ottoman with one of Daphne's bras in his mouth.
  • Resentful Outnumbered Sibling: Daphne is very defensive of her privacy because she was the only girl and her brothers didn't give her any privacy growing up.
  • Rite of Passage: Daphne's brothers had one of sneaking in to look at her in the shower.
Frasier: Dear god, all eight of them?
Daphne: Well, except for my brother Billy, the ballroom dancer. He never peeked at me. Though... he did peek at my brother Nigel.
  • The Tag: Daphne looks around her room to see if there's anyone hiding in it until she spots Eddie hiding under her bed covers and sends him out.
  • Toilet-Drinking Dog Gag: Eddie enters the bathroom and starts drinking from the toilet. Daphne (in the shower) tells him that’s disgusting and to get out, but Frasier, hiding behind the door and unaware of Eddie’s presence, thinks she is talking to him…
