Recap / Foster Home for Imaginary Friends S5E8 "Affair Weather Friends"

Go To

A rich kid named Barry Bling comes to Foster's looking for a friend. He has a mansion filled with toys, which tempts Bloo so much that he starts going behind Mac's back to hang with Barry. But there's something strangely familiar about Barry...

This episode provides tropes of:

  • The Bus Came Back: Berry makes her return in this episode after being last seen rolling away on a giant rubber band ball in "Berry Scary".
  • Call-Back: When Barry chooses to adopt Bloo over Duchess, she proclaims "Not again!", referencing the pilot "House of Bloo's".
  • Creative Closing Credits: The credits show the actual family that owns the mansion "Barry Bling" lives in, after escaping from their bonds offscreen, find the hole Berry inadvertently made after she's sent rolling away on the rubber band ball. Duchess is then seen sniffing and admiring the clothes in the mansion before walking away.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Mac eating at an ice cream parlor to forget about Bloo hanging out with another kid behind his back is played similarly to how one would try to drink their sorrows away after learning their significant other has been cheating on them.
  • Fun with Homophones: Berry tries to steal Bloo from Mac by disguising herself as a rich kid named Barry. Because of the similar-sounding names, Mac's unable to explain to Bloo that the two are one and the same until he refers to Berry as "Heather" (which was one of the incorrect names Bloo used to refer to Berry in her debut episode).
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Near the end of the episode, Berry ties Mac to a set of toy train tracks and tries to run him over with a toy train so she can have Bloo all to herself. To ensure Bloo won't be able to save Mac, she gives him an automatic paddle ball that he's been wanting to play with for so long. As Mac begs for Bloo to save him, Bloo has to choose between saving Mac or the playing with the paddle ball. He chooses the paddle ball... and uses it to save Mac.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Mac, feeling down in the dumps due to Bloo spending more time with someone else, consumes large amounts of ice cream and starts acting out an imagined conversation between him and Bloo where Bloo tells him that he doesn't need Mac anymore.
  • History Repeats: Berry once again finds herself tangled up in a rubber band ball and send rolling away. She even lampshades it.
Berry: Why does this keep happening to me?!
  • I Know You Know I Know: Done when Mac figures out that the rich kid Barry is actually Berry in disguise and ends up falling into a trap, after which Berry goes on a lengthy speech about anticipating that Mac anticipated her scheme and that she knew what he and Bloo would try to do.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Duchess' reaction upon realizing that Barry wants to adopt Bloo, not her, just like in "House of Bloo's".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mac, who normally avoids eating sugary food because he goes crazy after a single taste, actually goes to an ice cream parlor and orders a lot of ice cream after finding out that Bloo has been hanging out with Barry behind his back. This goes to show that he's so upset by Bloo's actions that he's willing to put himself into a sugar-crazed frenzy to try and forget about it.
  • The Reveal: The episode has rich boy Barry Bling wanting to have Bloo for himself. Turns out that Barry Bling was just Berry from Berry Scary in disguise.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Berry Scary". Even has some flashback clips from the episode shown redone in 16;9.
  • Wham Shot: As Mac is touring the mansion, he soon discovers various rooms that prove Barry isn’t what he seems but the real whopper is when he discovers a shrine room to Bloo along with a very familiar macaroni statue of him…
