Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 4 E 8 One Of Those Eds

Go To

One of Those Eds is the pilot of Season 4 of Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Eddy's piss-poor bed selling scam results in Rolf (whose back has been broken thanks to Eddy's "bed") beating a refund out of him. A dismayed Eddy soon cheers up when finds a quarter on the sidewalk. The problem? It's stuck. Eddy soon hides it so no one else sees it, but Hilarity Ensues when they do.

Tropes

  • Achievements in Ignorance: The quarter seems to be an inversion of this trope. Everyone else fails to pry off the quarter from the sidewalk with all sorts of forceful attempts, and yet Jonny is easily able to lift it up showing that gum was underneath it, which he had hid under the quarter for later. It's strongly implied that everyone else not knowing this is what made the quarter so resilient.
  • All for Nothing: The Eds' attempt to pry the quarter off the cement all amount to no success, and Jonny easily lifts the quarter himself, revealing gum he put there was keeping it in place.
  • Butt-Monkey: Rolf, big time. His back was broken by Eddy selling him a fake rock-hard bed (a wooden board with a pillow painted on it), and he still insists on getting that quarter.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The "Ed-Bed", which is just Ed with his head encased in a pillow and bed springs on his back.
  • Greed: Every kid (except Jonny, Ed, and Edd) on the Cul-de-sac.
  • Handicapped Badass: Despite having a broken back with a limited mobility, Rolf was able to pummel not only Eddy, but the other kids as well.
  • Hypocrite: Sarah complains to Edd for nearly blowing her ears out with a foghorn. But Sarah herself is ultra-loud with her own screaming and does it all the time to get attention.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Eddy might have been being a greedy jerk, but his complaint about being put at the back of Double D's line to attempt to remove the quarter is at least justified in that he was the one who found the quarter first (not counting Jonny). He's also somewhat right in saying that if Double-D had thought of a solution himself instead of his usual moralizing, they'd have gotten the quarter by now.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Every kid who greedily fought over the quarter gets nothing but disappointment in the end:
    • Jimmy tries peeling it off with his eyelash curlers, but somehow ends up going to the hospital.
    • Sarah tries pulling it off with her teeth, but Eddy mocks he can see her underwear, and she storms off embarrassed.
    • Kevin tries prying it off with a hook from his bicycle, but it turns out the quarter and whatever's glued it real shut to the pavement is so much stronger in force that his bicycle goes off on its own, forcing Kevin to go fetch it. He never returns or is seen afterwards.
    • Rolf tried beating the quarter up again until it left of its own accord, but his back pain re-ignites, making him unable to proceed any further.
    • Eddy naturally fails to remove the quarter in time before Jonny comes in, removes the gum off the quarter, then takes the quarter with him.
  • MacGuffin: A comically small one. It's simply a quarter stuck to the pavement of a sidewalk, yet everyone is fighting for it.
  • Noodle Incident: Jimmy gets into some kind of accident when trying to use his eyelash curler to remove the quarter. We don't see what happened, just that it brought him to tears and was so serious he had to be taken away in an ambulance. The only other hint is Kevin's comment that "Eyelashes ain't the only thing that thing curls".
  • Only Sane Man: Ed and Edd are the only ones who doesn't fight the others over the quarter, as Edd showed no interest in keeping the quarter for himself while Ed only stole everyone else’s shoes. Downplayed with Jimmy as he wasn’t trying to get into any fights over the quarter either.
  • Plumber's Crack: A subverted version is used as a Take Our Word for It gag. Eddy loudly declares that he can see Sarah's underwear as she is hunched over the coin and trying to pull at it with her teeth. The viewer is left in the dark about whether Eddy was telling the truth because Sarah is facing the "camera" as she is attempting to win the challenge. The rest of the children waiting with him laugh as if Eddy had pointed out what they were all thinking, making Sarah stomp away in red-faced embarrassment, but they were as competitive as Eddy, so they could've easily been lying as well.
  • Running Gag: Ed gradually swiping everyones shoes over the course of the episode (he thought the shoe Eddy left to hide the quarter was the whole point and it spiraled from there), ending with a big pile, and everyone standing around in their socks, including Ed himself.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: A promo for this episode reveals that the quarter was being held down by a piece of gum as Johnny was picking it up off the ground.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: While everyone is fighting over the quarter, Kevin accidentally cracks Rolf's back back into place, healing him. Rolf gives Kevin a quick thanks, but immediately declares he's a nincompoop and the quarter is his before diving back into the brawl.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Rolf spends most of the episode with a cracked back due to Eddy's mattress scam. It gets fixed at one point by Kevin accidentally cracking it back into place during a fight over the quarter. When it is Rolf's turn to try removing the quarter he ends up almost instantly cracking it again himself, and to add further insult to injury, Eddy immediately runs up and kicks him away.
Double D: Well, that can't be good for Rolf's back.
