Go To

Airdate: January 18, 2004

After Drake and Josh fix up an old dune buggy, their parents forbid them from driving in it. But when Drake secretly takes it out for a spin and injures himself, he tries to keep his injuries a secret to stay out of trouble.

This episode contains tropes of:

  • Amusing Injuries: Averted for the most part because Drake's injuries are actually treated seriously for most of the episode. The only times his pain is Played for Laughs is when Trevor puts his hand on Drake's shoulder and accidentally knocks him to the ground... twice, and when Josh convinces Walter to try out some wrestling moves on a secretly very crippled Drake. Played straight when Drake is helping Josh fix the buggy and Drake unknowingly connects the horns wires, setting off while Josh has his ears right next to the speakers.
  • An Aesop:
    • If you get seriously injured doing something you weren't supposed to do, it's better to tell someone right away even if you risk getting in trouble, because your health is much more important.
    • If you discover someone's hiding something that will get them in trouble, you should handle it responsibly and confront them directly instead of taking advantage of them while they're vulnerable.
  • Artistic License – Medicine: After Drake injuries himself in the dune buggy accident, he goes to the emergency room with just Trevor. In real life, because Drake is a minor, the hospital would have called his parents to let them what happened to Drake.
  • Bad Liar: Drake tells Josh to lie to their parents about the broken TV, a prospect which makes Josh uncomfortable. When it happens, Josh is barely able to not look suspicious and upon being called out, immediately blubbers out the whole truth, which gets him grounded not for the TV but for lying to Audrey.
  • Buffy Speak: "Fun crusher." "Juice germer."
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': A big part of the episode revolves around Josh's frustration that he always gets in trouble for little things while Drake somehow always escapes getting blamed for anything. Even at the end of the episode when Drake is forced to admit that he disobeyed orders and had an accident while taking the dune buggy out for a drive, he points out to Josh that he gets to sit in bed all day while Josh is the one who's made to bring stuff to him as punishment for taking advantage of Drake not telling his parents about his injuries.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Trevor is definitely not the brightest bulb, but he does point to Drake that his parents will eventually figure out that he is injured because he can barely stand up.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Drake wasn't wrong on the part that Josh is a Bad Liar.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Drake was told not to take the dune buggy out because he can't drive. He does so anyway and ends up getting in a serious accident. He's eventually coerced to come clean about it because of his injuries, which probably got worse because of his attempts to hide them.
    • However, Josh also gets hit with some because he found out about Drake's pain and did things such as goading his dad into wrestling Drake just to get back at him. When their parents find out he did this knowing Drake was hurt, he ends up getting in trouble for it.
  • Pet the Dog: When Drake confesses his injuries and Audrey starts hounding Josh for knowing about it and provoking their dad to wrestle Drake, Drake actually tells them to take it easy on Josh because he's a good kid. He also admits the TV getting busted was mostly his fault and that he coerced Josh into lying about it.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Josh delivers one to Drake after making Walter practice wrestling moves on him.
Drake: Why did you make him attack me?
Josh: Cause it's about time you stop getting away with everything.
Drake: What is that supposed t—
Josh: You threw the pillows! You talked me into lying about the TV! You got me grounded. And you took our dune buggy out when you weren't supposed to and you wrecked it!
    • And then, after Josh threatens to tell their parents and Drake tries to convince him not to...
    Josh: Fine! You tell 'em!
    Drake: Are you crazy?
    Josh: No, I'm honest.
    Drake: What?
Josh: I'm grounded for two weeks.
    Drake: Josh, you know—
Josh: We spent like a hundred hours on that dune buggy trying to fix it up and you ruined it! And you're hurt. But all you can think about is getting away with it. "Ooh, I'm Drake! I'm so cool, I get away with everything." Fine. I'll just stay grounded and I'll fix the dune buggy. Again. And you just keep worrying about yourself. It's what you're best at.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Walter and Audrey. When Drake finally confesses about he got hurt driving the dune buggy, they show more concern that he is hurt rather than he disobeyed them. Then when they learn that Josh found out about it, and still made his father wrestle Drake, therefore worsening his injuries, they get understandably mad at him for it. However, when Drake convinces them not them to be to hard on Josh, as well as taking responsibility for breaking the TV and convincing Josh to lie about it, they do ground him, but it’s mostly him staying in bed and allow his injuries to heal, while Josh has to take care of him, most likely for making Walter wrestle Drake despite knowing he was injured.
  • Unishment: Drake finally gets busted after telling the truth about his dune buggy accident. His punishment? Sitting in bed for several days being allowed to stay home from school, and having Josh bring food to him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After Drake confesses to the accident and his injuries, Audrey and Walter call out Josh for both not telling them about something this serious and worsening Drake's injuries by having Walter wrestle him among other things.
