Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 62 Kung Fooled

Go To

While in pursuit of Moliarty, Darkwing Duck, Launchpad and Gosalyn end up in Kung Pow City in China. Darkwing reconnects with his old martial arts instructor, the legendary Goose Lee, and tries his best to finally earn his black belt. Meanwhile, Gosalyn stumbles upon a hidden plot against the city involving a gang of ninja monkeys and a mysterious artifact.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Apologetic Attacker: Duck Ling apologises to the ninjas even as he kicks their backsides.
  • Digging to China: Moliarty literally does this to try to escape Darkwing Duck. Darkwing just drives the Ratcatcher down the tunnel after him.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: When Goose Lee tells Darkwing that he's "abandoned the ways of Quack Fu," Darkwing snaps back by pointing out how he's essentially done the same thing by monetizing the art. Goose Lee brushes it off since he's benefiting so much from it. Gosalyn later does it when he short-sightedly unleashes the Ancient Dragon of Kung Pow on the city, kicking him in the shin for good measure.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The Belly Bounce, which Darkwing struggles to master, eventually becomes the key to defeating the dragon - albeit on accident.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Goose Lee resurrects an ancient dragon so he can flatten Kung Pow City and build a theme park in its place. Except the dragon turns out to be a toddler and too young to be controlled, creating an even bigger problem.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Goose Lee derisively refers to Darkwing as "grubworm" since he never really graduated from his martial arts lessons. D.W. tries to pass it off as a term of respect, but Gosalyn and Launchpad don't buy it.
  • Everybody Wins: In the end, the dragon's distruction is stopped, peace is restored to Kung Pow City, Goose Lee builds his dream theme park which the dragon uses as a playground, and Darkwing Duck finally earns his black belt.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: While 'evil' is a stretch, since the dragon is an innocent toddler, the dragon quickly gets annoyed with Goose Lee trying to order it about and shakes him off.
  • Foo Fu: Quack Fu, the fighting style that Darkwing Duck trained in. It doesn't appear to be based on any real life martial art and incorporates bizarre techniques such as the "Beak Bash" and "Nostril Flip".
  • Heel Realization: Goose Lee does this when the Dragon of Kung Pow begins destroying the city, making him realize how low he'd sunk to achieve the success he wanted.
  • Hypocrite: Goose Lee. He claims that Darkwing Duck has abandoned the ways of Quack Fu, but he's turned the martial art into a capitalist venture, resulting in him living the high life in direct contradiction to his own teachings. His evil plan involves demolishing Kung Pow City in order to build a theme park dedicated to Quack Fu.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: Goose Lee delivers one or two of these just to Troll Darkwing. Except for the one when he reveals that he was behind the ninja attacks all along.
  • Like a Son to Me: When Darkwing gets injured by the dragon stepping on him, Goose Lee calls him "son" instead of "grubworm" - giving Darkwing the respect he'd been trying to win all this time. This galvanizes Darkwing into taking on the dragon head-on.
  • Maniac Monkeys: The ninjas terrorizing the city are all monkeys.
  • My Greatest Failure: Goose Lee considers Darkwing this for not only failing to earn his black belt, but for relying on gadgets to fight crime. He changes his tune by the end, though, after Darkwing defeats the dragon.
  • Obliviously Evil: The dragon that Goose Lee resurrects is actually a toddler, and destroys the city simply because it wants to play.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The dragon is stated by Duck Ling to be two thousand years old despite being a baby. Gosalyn reasons that, for a dragon, that is a baby.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: An ancient dragon sealed away in a statue that can only be awoken again when its horn is placed back onto its nose. Subverted in that the dragon isn't evil - its only a baby and is too young to understand how destructive it's being.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Duck Ling looks a lot like Honker.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Goose Lee is this to Darkwing. D.W. claims he only really started crimefighting in a vain attempt to win Lee's approval, and is desperate to get that respect by proving his mastery of Quack Fu. In the end, however, seeing his student injured causes Goose Lee to call him "son", finally acknowledging D.W. as something other than a failure.
  • What the Fu Are You Doing?: Almost every time Darkwing Duck tries to do the Belly Bounce, he ends up crashing into something.
