Recap / Cardcaptor Sakura Transfer Student Vs Sakura

Go To

Following the events of last episode Sakura once again finds herself in the bad graces of the new transfer student from Hong Kong, Meiling Li. Not only is she repeatedly trying (and failing) to one up Sakura at school, it also turns out she knows about the Clow Cards and is determined to help Syaoran triumph over Sakura. Meanwhile, news reports start filing in about a girl in strange clothes picking fights with master martial artists.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Syaoran really was worried about Meiling trying to capture a Clow card on her own. It's natural, given his abrasive attitude, that he would chew her out for doing such a thing.
  • Badass Normal: For all her haughtiness, Meiling establishes herself as a force to be reckoned with by being able to briefly hold her own against the Fight card. Kero confirms that she has no powers, which is unusual for a member of the Li clan.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: The Fight, natch. Kero states it was made solely for martial arts combat.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Downplayed; Syaoran tells off Meiling for going after a Clow Card and tackling it head-on since she has no powers. She is still a Badass Normal but it's confirmed that all the fighting skills in the world can't compensate for magic in this case.
  • Break the Haughty: Meiling isn't pleased that Syaoran's rival had to save her and Syaoran from the Fight Card. Not to mention that the card ended up defeating her twice.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Sakura points out multiple times that she's not trained for fighting. When Syaoran and Meiling are knocked out, she uses the Power card to defeat the Fight before it can curb-stomp her.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Sakura, utilizing the Power card, defeats the Fight card with one good bonk on the head.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: The Fight card easily defeats Meiling, but not before she puts up a good fight twice.
  • Cute Bruiser: The Fight Card, described as a "girl in a strange outfit".
  • Force and Finesse: The Fight Card vs Sakura with the Power card. Sakura wins.
  • Get Out!: It's revealed that Meiling booted out Sakura and Tomoyo for the crime of Sakura borrowing her shirt by accident.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Averted. After being saved by Syaron once, Meiling tries to take on Fight with renewed vigor, only to be beaten into a corner even faster, prompting Sakura to intervene.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: When Sakura identifies the Fight as the "girl in the strange outfit," Tomoyo says gushingly that she thinks the outfit is pretty cool.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Meiling is revealed to be this. Syaoran explicitly says he didn't want to bring Meiling along because she doesn't have powers. Presumably, his plan was to distract the Fight card long enough for Sakura to seal it and then he could take it. Meiling impulsively stole his card tracking board to find the card and defeat it, to prove that she could handle herself. While it does stall the Fight card long enough for Sakura to realize she ought to be a Combat Pragmatist, she and Li get injured as a result.
  • Mook Chivalry: Both parties do this, though more out of the Fight incapacitating them. Li knocks the Fight card away after it defeats Mei Ling the first time. Then it attacks him, meaning Syaoran is out of the fight. Meiling goes one-on-one, and the Fight defeats her before turning its focus to Syaoran. Sakura wisely decides to avert this by summoning the Power card for help.
  • One Hit Capture: Sakura only get's one good hit in on Fight, but given she has the strength of Power on her side, it knocks the card unconscious and allows Sakura to capture it.
  • Showgirl Skirt: The Fight's "strange outfit", which includes a sleeveless dress that fans out at the back while the front part is exposed, showing the leotard worn underneath.
  • Wham Line: Syaoran reveals that Meiling stole his card tracking board, which leads to everyone learning that Meiling has no powers.
  • What Were You Thinking?: When he comes to save Meiling, Syaoran starts berating her for taking on the Fight card alone, knowing she had no powers.
  • Worthy Opponent: The Fight card has this attitude towards Meiling, given it wants to fight her first rather than Sakura.
