  • Batman Gambit: The Master knew that the Doctor would go to meet Walter Vincent, thinking they were him, and remains with Molly and Liv, enabling him to capture Narvin when he comes to rescue them.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Narvin spends a lot of the story trying to stop the Eminence taking control of his mind, the Eminence trying to use Narvin's guilt.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Actually said by the Doctor, as the Eminence goes everywhere, being stretched out so far it breaks apart.
  • Call-Forward: A lot of this story, the Master taking over Earth during a transmission from a high-ranking figure, feels similar to "The Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords".
  • Dream Sequence: Molly has one where she meets the Master during WWI in the Doctor's place, due to him playing with her mind. It gets odd when she says the Master needs a haircut as she said about the Doctor... then realizes he's bald.
  • Fake Memories: The Master has inserted himself into Molly's memories in the Doctor's place.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: The Doctor tries this on Engineer Tallow when she is first taken over by the Master, and is able to free her due to touching Walter Vincent, giving him some of their mental power. However this fails when Tallow is taken over by the Breath of Forever, initiating the self-destruct.
  • La RĂ©sistance: The Doctor and Liv are this when the Master briefly takes over the world.
  • Mind Control: The Master spreads the Eminence gas around Earth, then activates the retro-genitor particles he has spread throughout humanity using Walter Vincent, placing humanity under his control.
  • New Era Speech: Walter Vincent delivers one as the Master uses Walter as the trigger to place humanity under his control.
  • President Evil: Walter Vincent, the Grand Administrator of Earth. The Doctor thinks he's the Master, but he turns out to be a construct created by the Master from Molly's memory of her father Patrick O'Sullivan. He is the trigger which brings the minds of humanity under the Master's control.
  • The Starscream: The Doctor tells the Eminence the Master has become this to them, so they become this to him.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: As humanity is freed of his control the Master escapes in his TARDIS, which was disguised as a palm tree.
  • Won the War, Lost the Peace: Explicitly said by the Eminence. Humanity has won the war against them, but just as the announcement is being made humanity is placed under the Master's control.
