Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: The Master works out the Doctor's plan to sabotage the ship, meaning he ejects the TARDIS, trapping the Doctor on the ship.
  • Cassandra Truth: The Doctor warns Professor Markus Shriver what his work will lead to but isn't believed.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Sally Armstrong has weapons in the reception desk, which she uses to capture Liv.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Liv Chenka, when she and Sally Armstrong are sealed in chambers which will randomly kill one of them, is accepting and calm, though she doesn't die. This is averted by Sally Armstrong, who panics, and does die.
  • Locked in a Room: The Doctor and Master are sealed in the same room on a ship about to crash for much of the episode. During this time they analyze each other.
  • Mad Scientist: Professor Markus Shriver, who becomes more unstable throughout the story.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The Doctor tells Markus Shriver, who is performing work that will lead to the creation of the Eminence, he will eventually have this reaction. He compares him to Mikhail Kalashnikov, an engineer who invented weapons but towards the end of his life wrote a letter to the Church claiming his soul was in pain, having realized the true nature of his legacy.
  • Ominous Message from the Future: The Doctor tries to stop the creation of the Eminence by warning their creator Professor Shriver of what his work will lead to. It doesn't work.
  • Outfit Decoy: When the Master thinks he has found the Doctor with their back to him, it turns out to be the Doctor's coat, which tricks the Master into setting off a trap.
  • Taking You with Me: When they are both stuck on a spaceship about to crash, the Doctor tells the Master "If I'm going to die on an exploding spaceship frankly I can't think of anybody I would rather take with me."
  • Villainous Breakdown: Sally Armstrong, in contrast to Liv Chenka, as her possible death gets closer. She dies.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: Liv points out that Molly, a working class nurse, is more important to the Master than Sally's educated, loyal self, and that the Master is a Bad Boss who'd dispose of her without a second thought. Surprisingly, this is untrue — the Master appears genuinely fond of Sally, and is upset at her death.
