Sixteen

Zelda celebrates her sixteenth birthday, and the rest of Hyrule spends a normal day in their normal lives, unaware of how drastically things are going to change.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Unlike Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, this is stated to be a true prequel, and thus Link and Impa never find Terrako, or her sisters.
    • The Lomei Labyrinths are stated to have been impossible to solve with no way of getting to their middles, at least until recently. No such thing is indicated in the game, with the only obstacle being the Malice present in the labyrinths.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • The word Zonai is literally only mentioned once in Breath of the Wild, specifically in "Pearls and Flames". Here, they're established as having been a part of Hyrule's ancient past, including the labyrinths, and investigating them is going to be a part of the story going forward.
    • Cheria is a traveling merchant in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity with no story presence at all. Here, she's with Impa and Zelda as part of the main research team.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Zelda's sixteenth birthday goes well for most of the day, but the end of it is ruined by a monster invasion.
  • Composite Character: Harbinger Ganon, Arbiter Ganon, and Executioner Ganon are the same devices who came through the portal. As shown in the intro to Guardian of Remembrance, the possessed diminutive Guardian was not the ones who went through the portal, but the other remaining in Zelda's study.
  • Continuity Nod: Zelda mentioned in Breath of the Wild that her father was good to her on her sixteenth birthday and even brought her a bouquet of Silent Princesses.
  • Decomposite Character: Harbinger Ganon is split among itself, Arbiter Ganon, and Executioner Ganon.
  • Demonic Possession: The Guardian Sisters come through a strange portal and are followed and conquered by a cloud of Calamity Ganon's Malice that possesses them before they can escape it.
  • Description Porn: Much of the chapter is spent giving incredible detail into Hyrule as it was in the past, describing everything about Castle Town and some of the other areas around Hyrule.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • King Rhoam gives his daughter a free day to spend for herself, returns an old relic that she and her mother had found, and even gives her a bouquet of the rare Silent Princess, but demands that she return to training the next day. He truly loves her, but is still focused on trying to stem Calamity Ganon's return.
    • Impa wakes up Zelda while she's in bed to give her a birthday surprise, but later while she's with her, takes the time to practice her hand seals. She's both a true friend to Zelda, and a dedicated Sheikah.
    • Zelda spends the day happy with her close friend Impa during her birthday, but even that happiness isn't enough to distract her from her apparent failures, as she can't control her powers.
    • Link has a fight with four other knights at once and beats them soundly by reading their moves, predicting their attacks, and attacking accordingly. He follows it up by giving them some advice and is overall friendly with them.
  • Foreshadowing: King Rhoam sends Link to find whatever is hidden within the Lomei Labyrinths, as no one has figured out what is inside of them.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Zelda expresses hope that things will get better and that all of her hard work over the years won't be all for nothing. We already know how this is going to end.
  • Hand Seals: Impa practices twelve hand seals while she and Zelda are spending time together. They're taken straight from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which themselves are taken from Naruto.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Zelda pokes fun at a Noodle Incident where Impa accidentally cut a hole in the side of her house while using her kodachi.
  • Original Characters: Ulo, Tyria, and the elite knights in general, as Link was the only member of the royal guard to be shown and named.
