Eccentric Geniuses

Link begins to investigate the labyrinths across Hyrule while Zelda works to investigate Sheikah technology.

Tropes:

  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Hestu remarks that the three Triforce pieces create an upside-down triangle in the middle, and he theorizes that maybe Hylia will get a piece of her own that would complete the triangle. While Bani scoffs at this, Breath of the Wild ends up showing that he's not that far off the mark, as Hylia doesn't get a Triforce piece of her own, but does have her own spirit animal.
  • The Dead Have Names: Again, Bani takes the time to record the names of the dead, and Hestu volunteers to take the bodies back.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Robbie and Purah make their introduction here as eccentric but effective Sheikah technology researchers. Robbie strikes a pose and yelling out, which no one even bats an eye at. Purah speaks with long sentences, at one point snatches the Sheikah Slate from Zelda, and even pulls her and Impa in for a surprise selfie with the Sheikah Slate.
  • Evil Smells Bad: Like in the previous fic, solid Meat Moss Malice is described as smelling like rotting meat. Hestu uses his powers to mask the smell since it's so horrible and nauseating.
  • Futureshadowing: The deepest hidden chambers in North Lomei Labyrinth feature highly intricate carvings of an owl, boar, wolf, and frog, hinting at the four spirits that would be revealed in Breath of the Wild.
  • Neutral Female: Male example. Hestu and Bani prepare to fight Astor, but they don't actually do anything, and Link does all the fighting while they don't fight Astor at all.
  • The Reveal: The treasure hidden within North Lomei Labyrinth is the Scale of Naydra, implied to be the same one Impa would use 100 years later. It's indicated that the other labyrinths contain the other dragon's scales.
  • Shout-Out: The description of the doorway leading to the hidden chambers of North Lomei Labyrinth matches that of the Door of Time from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, although with the added feature of the Crest of Nayru in the central circle.
  • Trail of Blood: One of these is found in North Lomei Labyrinth. Link and co. follow it until they find the dead body of a Sheikah woman named Apelia, and then the rest of the team's corpses are found just the same.
