- Big Bad: The Stygians are Spectra (humans with elemental abilities) who have gone through dark rites to gain the powers of all six clans.
- Black-and-White Morality: A literal example. The Big Bad Stygians have dark-themed names, while the spectrum that combines to defeat them use white magic.
- Blow You Away: Wind shaping is a subset of the Coles' heat abilities, which only a few characters can do.
- Color-Coded Elements: Each of the six types of magic have an associated color:
- Coming of Age Story: Most books are Young Adult and feature a young person discovering their place in the world.

- The villain of the Dream Rovers trilogy is the ancestor of the Keita's Wings Love Interest.

- Legendary in the Sequel: The characters of Keita's Wings and Dream Rovers both see a relief carving of Mira from Mira's Griffin.
- Making a Splash: The Mers use water abilities.
- Our Griffins Are Different: Griffins are large animals with limited magic in all six types. They are four-limbed, and have a changing relationship with humans throughout different series.
- Psychic Link: All Spectra characters have a psychic link with their siblings, but it's limited by distance of about a mile. In addition, the Muse clan can create one with anyone they are emotionally close to, regardless of distance.
- Playing with Fire: Coles can control heat, which often results in fire.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: The exiled royals in Keita's Wings must fight to regain their kingdoms, and references are made to their parents ruling. The duties of royalty are discussed in The Spectra Undaunted.
- Shock and Awe: Lectrans use electrical abilities.
- Speaks Fluent Animal: Some Sprites (nature magic) and Muses (communication magic) can communicate with animals, though not in word-for-word human speak.
- The Empath: Muses, the communicator clan, have heart-like abilities that can include emotion reading and manipulation.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Sprites know at least one animal form.
- War Is Hell: Battles are always chaotic and frightening, even for powerful people.
