Funny / That Thing You Do!

Go To

Theater version

  • Guy's father calling him up every night to yell at him about leaving the lights on.
  • The MC at the talent show the Oneders perform at doesn't handle heckling gracefully:
Emcee: How do you sell a chicken to a deaf man?
    Heckler: You're a jerk, Ken!
Emcee: [Shouting] 'Hey! Would you like to buy a chicken?!'
    Heckler: Eat my shorts, Ken!
Emcee: SHUT UP!!! [away from mic] I'll kick your ass!
  • Anytime Steve Zahn as Lenny opens his mouth.
Restaurant Manager: (fanning a wad of bills) Do you know what this is?
    Lenny: ...presidential flashcards?
    • After their first gig at Villiapiano's:
    Lenny: Wasn't that our fan?
    • When the band is preparing to perform at the Ohio State Fair:
Mr. White: "That Thing You Do" is gonna play tomorrow morning with 50,000 watts behind it. It's very important you don't stink today.
Lenny: Hey, I make no guarantees.
  • The first shot of the band recording at Uncle Bob's church is Jimmy screaming at the top of his lungs as the camera cuts to various icons in the church.
  • When Jimmy asks when their record will be ready, Guy's Uncle Bob the Christian music producer replies by quoting a verse about patience from the Gospel of Luke. The band members stare at him, utterly baffled. He sighs and clarifies: "Wednesday."
    • Lenny's wondering who this "Luke" guy is.
  • The scene where The Wonders get on the radio for the first time has several funny details:
    • Faye gets so distracted she has to stop and run back to the mailbox so she can mail the letter she was sending.
    • When Faye and the bass player make it to the appliance store, the bass player wipes his feet on the welcome mat.
    • When Lenny and Jimmy arrive, they leave Jimmy's car parked out in the middle of the street, and they don't even shut the doors on the car.
    • Lenny runs over to Guy's sister and tries to flirt with her. When she doesn't respond, he grabs a cardboard cutout of a woman selling a stand mixer, kisses it, and jumps around with it. Guy's sister just stares at him with an awkward look on her face.
  • Faye attacking Guy with a baloney sandwich.
  • Mr. White trying to catch a nap on the plane... sitting next to Lenny. First, Lenny noisily unwraps a piece of candy, so Mr. White confiscates the wrapper. Then Lenny bites down on the candy even more noisily, so Mr. White tells him to go to the cockpit and tell them it's his birthday.
  • Guy, who is already tipsy, gets to meet his idol Del Paxton and pretty much short-circuits.
  • The band's "major motion picture" cameo, miming instruments for a teen beach movie as "Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters." Lenny (who's pretending to play the saxophone) gets way too into it.
  • Later, when the D.J. of the jazz station asks about their musical influences, Lenny answers "Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters, to Mr. White's exasperation.
  • T.B. walking up to a group of off-duty Marines at the lunch counter to introduce himself as a forthcoming recruit and saying that he can already do 200 pushups. The sergeant nods and tells him to do 100. T.B. promptly drops to the floor to get started.
    T.B.: One... two... three...
Sergeant: [after ordering a coffee] I like this kid. Louder, son!
    T.B.: ...Nine! Ten! Eleven! Twelve!...
  • Guy and Mr. White trying to figure out where the hell T.B. is. Cut to T.B. and the Marines he met having the time of their lives at Disneyland.
  • Lenny tries to beg $200 off of Jimmy to gamble with in Vegas after the taping. Jimmy, who is being more of a Jerkass than usual, snaps to ask Guy because "he's a sucker." But sure enough, when Guy walks in a few minutes later he cheerfully hands over two $100 bills as soon as Lenny asks.
  • Despite being the lead act and no other acts performing with them, the band still robotically unplugs at the same time when their set is over.
  • On a meta level, Tom Everett Scott being a dead ringer for a ten-years-younger Hanks. A making-of spot had Hanks admit he was reluctant to cast him because not only was Scott in the role Hanks would have had, they looked so much alike.
  • When the first manager offers to sign them, Lenny gets very excited:
Lenny: Are you crazy? A man in a really nice camper wants to put our song on the radio! Gimme a pen, I'm signin'! You're signin'! We're all signin'!
  • This exchange when Mr. White clarifies the band name due to people getting it wrong:
Mr. White: Next, this "Oneders", with the O-N-E, it doesn't work. It's confusing. From now on, you boys'll just be... simply The Wonders.
Lenny: As in, I wonder what happened to the O'Needers?
  • Jimmy quits the band in a sing-song manner, snapping on the beat, and it seems like a joke until he abruptly stops and flatly says "I quit, Mr. White."

Director's Cut

  • Guy bursts into T.B.'s room to gush about their rising Billboard ranking while T.B. is visibly uncomfortable—and then Guy sees one of the Chantrellines in the bed. She gives him a little wave.
  • Guy gets dropped off at the hotel by Marguerite the waitress, where Mr. White meets him (while his boyfriend Lloyd waits impatiently so they can go to a party). After instructing Guy to go upstairs and sleep, White starts giving Lloyd a spiel about how he can't shirk his responsibilities, but now he's off duty, and they can get going—unaware that Guy, who is practically legless at this point, is following him to the car.
    Lloyd: [grinning] Bring him along.
  • After the taping of the show Mr. White loses his professional attitude when he gets to meet astronaut Gus Grissom and is basically Squeeing, ignoring Grissom's obvious reticence and pestering him to say hello to Lloyd over the phone.
