Insyriated is a 2017 Belgian drama film directed by Philippe Van Leeuw.
Oum Yazan (Hiam Abbass) lives in a flat in Damascus with her family: her children, her father-in-law, the boyfriend of one of her daughters, and her female servant. Halima, her neighbour, has also lived with them since her own flat was destroyed. Civil war is ongoing in the neighbourhood.
Insyriated provides examples of:
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed, but the youngest girl spies on her older sister Aliya and her boyfriend, when they are alone in a bedroom.
- Bookends: In the first scene, Abou Monzer, the father-in-law, is looking by the window of the flat. He does the same in the last scene.
- Bottle Episode: Most of the action of the film happens inside the flat. The camera goes outside only when Halima, Aliya and her boyfriend pick up the body of Halima's husband in the car park.
- Disney Death: Halima's husband is shot down in the first minutes of the film. Oum Yazan assumes that he is dead. In the end, Halima, Aliya and her boyfriend look for his body and he is still alive.
- Extremely Short Timespan: The action of the movie lasts 24 hours.
- The Ghost: Oum Yazan's husband. Oum Yazan hopes that he will be back soon. She expects him to come to pick up Halima's husband. In the end she can just talk with him very briefly on the phone.
- Protect This House: The whole family is locked up in the flat. Civil war is ongoing outside. Dangerous men try to enter the flat. Oum Yazan tries to remove them.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Halima's rape is a horrible scene and it is used to show how terrible the civil war in Syria is.
