After being released from prison in 1994, free-spirited young mother Inez (Teyana Taylor) kidnaps her young son, Terry, from an abusive situation in foster care. Mother and son then embark on a journey through New York to try and start their new lives.
A 2023 drama, it was released by Focus Features and is A.V. Rockwell's debut film.
Tropes
- Big Applesauce: New York is rapidly gentrified and chaotic.
- Bittersweet Ending: Inez leaves Terry/Darryl, potentially forever (though she promises it won't be) and she's now escaped from the police. He's left without a home, but he's clearly grown up to be well-adjusted with a bright future ahead of him, and Inez says she feels like she "won" because of that.
- But Not Too Black: Discussed. Inez accuses Lucky of preferring another woman, Lisa, for being lighter-skinned than her.
- Free-Range Children: Inez doesn't have a choice but to leave Terry/Daryl home alone for long periods of time, as she has no family and nobody to watch him.
- Friends Like Family: Even when Inez's friends grow irritated with her, nobody ever reports her for abducting Terry/Daryl.
- Outlaw Couple: Lucky and Inez were this; both of them have been in prison, with Inez saying she went to prison multiple times for him
- The Reveal: Inez isn't Terry/Daryl's real mother. She found him on the street outside the homeless shelter and took him with her.
