Fanfic / Harry Potter and the Ritual of Love's Memory

Go To

Harry Potter and the Ritual of Love's Memory by CampDBow is a Harry Potter Fanfic. Here, the horcrux hunt implodes during the trio's foray into Gringotts, leaving most of those Harry loves dead, and he is forced to start a new life with a few fellow survivors far away from wizarding Britain. But the discovery of an ancient ritual that promises to send a single memory back in time sparks hopes that maybe things can change. The catch is that the ritual can only be used to help a person change the past to have more time with the one they love. How will things change for a younger version of Harry after receiving this memory from the future? Sweeping changes result, and past Harry must navigate the world with his new surprise memory, with many changes coming as a result.

The fic can be read here and here.

Unmarked spoilers below.

This fanfic has examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • Luna and Parvati are a couple,
    • Cedric is also bi.
  • Ancestral Name: Several children of surviving characters in the original timeline are named for those who didn't make it in the original timeline.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The Twins help Harry train for the third Triwizard task by pelting him with quaffles so he can practise stopping them with the Impediment Jinx.
Fred: It's time to see if you're as good under pressure as people keep saying you are. Sure, you may have beaten a dragon, escaped a werewolf, and killed a basilisk, but you've never had to face off against the Gryffindor quidditch team.
  • Cannot Tell a Lie: After the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in the Modified Timeline, Umbridge is enraged to realise that she has been exposed to various potions through samples being spilled over her during a confrontation with the Death Eaters. A particular consequence of this is that she was dosed with Veritaserum and all evidence indicates that she will now be permanently unable to lie, allowing Sirius (previously cleared after Crouch Jr. went to trial) to confirm various anti-werewolf laws she arranged to pass, as well as Harry and his friends confirming that they had the best Defence marks in their year.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Kreacher to Harry asking why he didn't call him sooner.
  • Defiant to the End:
    • Hermione is this to Bellatrix in the 'original timeline', and successfully baits Bellatrix into killing her to Voldemort's frustration.
    • In the Modified Timeline Krum is this to Voldemort, declaring his love for Hermione before being killed at Voldemort's resurrection ritual.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: in the story's 'original timeline', Ron goes out swinging and in his last moment takes out the Cup Horcrux, too bad Harry doesn't know he succeeded at this.
  • Fired Teacher: Snape to McGonagall when Voldemort enters her classroom during his surprise takeover of hogwarts.
  • Fix Fic: Due to being a time travel story with the intention of changing the past, of at least of one reality in the multiverse.
  • From Roommates to Romance: Subverted. Harry is just roommates and friends with Luna while in Mexico, and that's it. This has to do with Luna’s sexual orientation in this fic.
  • Get Out!: Several teachers to students during Voldemort's assault on the castle as they try protect them from Voldemort’s wrath. This proves to be justified in the end.
  • He Was Right There All Along: Voldemort's locket horcrux was in 12 Grimmauld Place the entire time, and not in a sea-side cave as Voldemort would think.
  • It's All My Fault: Harry blames himself for Ron and Hermione’s deaths, though the other survivors try to dissuade him of this opinion.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Voldemort wants Hermione alive to find out what she knows, Bellatrix did not get this message and kills her in anger when she finds out who wand she had just snapped in two.
  • Impostor-Exposing Test: Fred, Angelina and Luna when Harry joins them after everything goes south, but before fleeing to Mexico.
  • Join or Die: Voldemort to McGonagall after seeing her duel him, and being throughly impressed.
  • Killed Offscreen: Fred, Ginny, Molly, Arthur, Percy, Tonks, Remus, Shacklebolt and Mr. Lovegood are killed in the original timeline by unnamed Death Eaters.
  • Leave No Survivors: Voldemort threatens to genocide the entire goblin race if they don't bring him Harry Potter who is locked in the Black Family Vault, and he might do it anyway even if they do bring Harry to him.
  • The Lost Lenore: Ginny's status as this to Harry is the main reason the original ritual can be attempted; it must be used by someone who has lost the love of their life, with the intent of allowing their younger self "the chance to find their love sooner and enjoy more time together." Used judiciously, it might also be able to alter the course of history and avert great tragedies, but the core of it must be the yearning for a lost love, or else the ritual will backfire spectacularly.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Umbridge's efforts to turn the school against Harry by constantly taking house points off him only serve to turn the rest of Gryffindor even more against her. Since she's taking points from Harry for completely petty reasons like him leaving when the bell goes for the end of the class, rather than wait for Umbridge to dismiss them (something that no other teacher enforces), the rest of Gryffindor decide that since they clearly aren't going to have a fair shot at the House Cup this year they're not going to bother trying.
  • The Not-So-Harmless Punishment: With Professor McGonagall doing more enforcement of school by-laws than in canon, Professor Umbridge isn't able to use a Blood Quill to make Harry write lines in his own blood while carving the message into the back of his hand. Instead, she gives him a quill that whispers into his head the line he just wrote. It's not loud, it just quietly repeats the words back to him; nothing for the school governors to raise an eyebrow at. Except that it adds an extra voice every time he has to write the line again, so after several hours of it, every repetition is a cacophony inside his head that no one else can hear, which persists afterward and leaves him with blurred vision, nausea, and unsteadiness on his feet.
  • Ominous Message from the Future: Harry sending a memory back to his past self is basically intended as this, as he chooses a time when he distinctly recalls thinking about horcruxes while he's with Ginny, allowing him to both inspire his past self to think about dating her and give advance knowledge of the existence of horcruxes.
  • Pranking Montage: Voldemort finds himself on the wrong end of several Weasley Pranks during his assault on Hogwarts castle in the original timeline.
  • Punch a Wall: George does this when he learns the fate of Ron and Hermione in the original timeline.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Bill and Fleur are fired by Gringotts when the Goblins realize they inadvertently gave Dumbledore info to break in and destroy the cup horcrux, and due to being associated with him.
  • Rules Lawyer: When Harry and his allies attempt to set up a more public study group on defence magic, Umbridge attempts to undermine them by booking the Great Hall for herself for a seminar on Recognizing and Rebuffing the Media's Lies, on the same night that they had originally booked it. Since teachers have first right of refusal for use of classrooms and the Great Hall, they can't just transfer it to another room, either. They respond by holding their meetings in the Chamber of Secrets instead, as it's large enough for their purposes and isn't covered under the same rules that allowed Umbridge to book the Great Hall.
  • Run for the Border: Harry, George, Angelina, and Luna flee for Mexico after the Gringotts mission goes south in the original timeline.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Cedric Diggory isn't with Harry in the graveyard. But Viktor Krum is, and despite being better prepared for a fight than Cedric, he's caught by Nagini and then executed.
  • Time Skip: Fic skips from when Harry is 17 to when he is 22 in the original timeline.
  • The Stations of the Canon: Several events still happen as they do in the original canon, such as someone going along with Harry in the third task and getting killed, Fudge not believing Harry and Dumbledore about Voldemort's return, and Umbridge teaching at the school in Harry's fifth year.
  • Transferable Memory: The story relies on this as its instigator, except only a single memory can be sent back.
  • Trial by Friendly Fire: Slughorn casts a killing curse at Voldemort, but accidentally kills Professor Sprout instead when she is used as a human shield by Voldemort.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Subverted. Harry finds the memory time travel potion extremely spicy despite living in Mexico for several years. This also applies to a lot a food he encounters.
  • Unfriendly Fire:
    • Voldemort kills Bellatrix in the original timeline in his anger due to her failure to protect his horcrux.
    • Firenze kills Snape in the original timeline when he thinks he is on Voldemort's side.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Harry breaks down, trying to claim It's All My Fault that most of the Weasleys are dead. George is having none of that, and starts listing the ways that Harry has helped out their family — which are so numerous that he actually overlooks one of the times Harry saved Ron's life. When Harry tries to keep arguing, Angelina hexes him into silence.
