Go To

Breath of the Wolf is a Breath of the Wild fanfic by Saphroneth. An error in the shrine of resurrection accidentally restores a previous version of Link, specifically Link's wolf form from Twilight Princess. Cue an amnesiac Link, with just enough memory to know he wasn't always a wolf but not enough to care, being forced to navigate the ruins of Hyrule with tools designed for bipeds.

The series can be read on Fanfiction, Arcive of our Own, and upcoming chapers can be read on Spacebattles.

Breath of the Wolf contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Animal Talk: Much like his previous reincarnation, this Link can speak with some animals, particularly horses and other wolves.
  • Continuity Nod: Many, mostly in the form of Link obtaining vague memories of past lives, or in some cases lives from other timelines.
  • Continuity Snarl: As stated above, some of Link's memories are of lives he couldn't have lived, due to taking place in conflicting timelines. The most noticeable example is the fact that he can pull memories from both the Hero of Twilight (Hawk's Song) and the Hero of Wind (Wind's Requiem), which take place in child timeline and adult timeline respectively.
  • Cutlass Between the Teeth: Due to lacking thumbs, this is Link's primary method of using weapons.
  • Forced Transformation: Link was turned into a wolf while asleep in the shrine of resurrection. Fortunately for him, his amnesia makes it so that he has next to no dysphoria with his new form, since it's not like he remembers his old one.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Most people Link encounters assume he's either a particularly large dog or some near-extinct species that can't speak Hylian.
  • Magic Music: So far, Link is able to use his howl to use the Hawk Song, and the Wind's Requiem. Both learned while listening to Kass.
  • Noble Wolf: Link spends the story as a large wolf, but is still the hero of Courage and dedicated to saving Hyrule.
  • Running Gag: Link has a habit of giving the people he comes across an apple, much to their confusion.
