Fanfic / Bodyguard of Azula

Go To

Bodyguard of Azula is a crossover fic between the worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Naruto.

When Naruto gets banished from Konoha after bringing Sasuke back, he flees to a different continent, which is in fact the Bending Countries, the world of Avatar. There, he meets the Fire Lord's Family, and after several events, becomes Azula's bodyguard. From there, a lot of changes occur for Naruto's world, though the story remains fairly close to the Avatar world's canon.

Complete as of April 18, 2014. A sequel, Paragon of Korra, is published as well. It's been completed as well.

Warning: Unmarked Spoilers ahead!

Bodyguard of Azula provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Sokka, due to his training as a Paragon.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Azula, thanks to Naruto's influence. Though slow in the beginning, even then she isn't as bad as canon, and in the end she joins Zuko in leaving the Fire Nation to join Team Avatar.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Downplayed with Sokka. He's not exactly smarter so much as more serious and less comic relief. He also makes some smarter decisions, like asking for training in waterbending movements from Pakku, since he knows that he needs more than his weapons to be more effective in battle.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Katara, though mostly towards her brother. She is angry that he learns waterbending and thinks that he's just doing it so she wouldn't have something that was her own, and she spends the time giving him nothing but sarcasm, dirty looks, and insults. Even after that, she refuses to listen when he is suspicious of something or someone and brushes it off as needless paranoia, regardless of how many times he's proven right and how many people agree that he has good instincts.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Katara always chews out Sokka for being too paranoid and suspicious about people they meet, no matter how many times his paranoia have been proven right.
  • Artifact Title: Seeing how Naruto and Azula stay on the sidelines for the majority of the story it counts as this.
  • Author Tract: Naruto is not one to shy away from letting his opinions on Aang be known.
  • Badass Normal: In order to be a Paragon, the people who keep an eye on the Avatar, you cannot be a Bender. Of course, it says nothing about shinobi training, which gives Naruto something of an unfair advantage over the other Paragons.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Like in canon, Zuko does this with Ozai. Azula joins him in this story, and even rejects her claim to the throne, and her family ties to Ozai.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Naruto decides to punish Aang for his stupidity... by forcing him to get "the talk"... from Jiraiya!
  • Hypocrite: Naruto is constantly preaching to Azula the value of friendship and how she should let people in more. This is the same Naruto who coldly and harshly rejects the offers of friendship from the Konoha 11 and at one point stabbed Hinata for attempting to be his friend.
  • I Have No Son!: An inversion: Azula declares on the day of the eclipse that she is no longer the daughter of Ozai.
  • In Name Only: This story's Naruto is so detached from his original self he may as well be an OC.
  • Light Is Not Good: Just because the Avatar is merged with Raava, the Light Spirit, doesn't mean that they can't still go astray and do evil things, which is why the Paragons are needed.
    • Roku is a perfect example of this, as he caused a fire that killed colonists in an attempt to keep the nations separate.
  • Out of Focus: As noted many times for supposedly being the main character Naruto spends a considerable amount on the sidelines often not even making an appearance some chapters.
  • Supporting Protagonist: For a fic that supposed to be about Naruto bodyguarding Azula they both spend a considerable amount of time on the sidelines.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Yao Jing, Zuko and Azula's half sister who exists for the sole purpose of playing out Azula's role in canon after Azula switched sides.
