Luella Shakespeare
- Played by: Jo Joyner
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Luella has long thick blonde hair and is extremely sweet.
- Nice Girl: Luella is so sweet that it gets her into trouble.
- Like an Old Married Couple: In spades with Frank, right from their first meeting.
- Parenting the Husband: A non-romantic version with Frank, she basically begins smartening him up from the end of the pilot, encouraging him to be nicer and mending relationships and he grudgingly does it.
Frank Hathaway
- Played by: Mark Benton
- Embarrassing First Name: It's hinted he considers his full name, Francis as this.
- Genius Slob: Though he's gone to seed in a lot of ways, he is still a sharp and experienced detective.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Irritable, lazy and snarky to high heaven but basically a good man.
- Like an Old Married Couple: In spades with Luella, right from their first meeting.
- The Mentor: Grudgingly at first to Lu, as a PI. He was clearly DI Marlowe's mentor before he departed the force, given their fairly cordial relationship.
Sebastian Brudenell
- Played by: Patrick Walsh Mac Bride
- All Gays Love Theater: A classically trained gay actor.
- Camp Gay: Although all the evidence of his sexual orientation is second-hand.
- Classically-Trained Extra: Literally. He's a RADA-trained actor who currently only has jobs in commercials and bit parts in Shakespeare productions.
- Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: His work as Frank's secretary is this.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: Usually his acting talent comes in surprisingly handy.
- Unlimited Wardrobe: By necessity, since he's usually the one going undercover in disguise. Justified by him living in an apartment above a costume shop, whose owner is extremely cooperative.
- Waistcoat of Style: Wears this any time he's not in costume.
