The Mustang siblings

    Evelyn Mustang
The main lead of the story. A state alchemist of the rank of Lieutennant in her mid-twenties. After she and her brother Roy lost their parents, they grew up in Central and were raised as well-behaved members of society by their aunt and adoptive mother Chris Mustang. After witnessing the state of her brother when he returned from Ishval and uncovering his plan to become the Fuhrer and later give himself and all of the other soldiers over to punishment, she entered the millitary herself to prevent such an outcome, so that her brother would be incapable of going through with the last part of his plan after making it to the top.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Not only at the makeshift hospital, but also in her family. She is Roys little sister and her adoptive sisters are all older than her.
  • The Caretaker: It is said that Evelyn became this to her brother, after the Eastern Rebellion. After Roy returned as a PTSD-ridden mess, she made sure she sat next to him when he slipped into an attack, cleaning up vomit and sweat, chasing away the nightmares and battering off apologies directed at her, as Roy considers himself a burden on her. Later on her adoptive sisters FORCE her into taking time for herself again, while they watch Roy.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Definatly pulls this off.
  • Happily Adopted: Was adopted by her aunt alongside her brother, after her parents died in a raid.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Downplayed. As an alchemist, she is not one for religion and outright despises warriors who fight in some gods name, while not actively attacking people of faith.
  • Innocence Lost: At age 15-17 people are normally still ready to tackle the world all hope and wonder...not Evelyn though, as she witnessed the brutality of the Eastern Rebellion at the makeshift hospital she worked at after the schools closed down and also the sorry state of her brother who had had to crater to the whims of the current Fuhrer and commit atrocities even if he did not want to. She carries on with a praiseworthy rage towards certain parties like the senior staff of the Amestrian army and the people who believe that the soldiers who served at Ishval have to be held fully accountable for her actions.
  • The Medic: Due to her work at a makeshift hospital during the Ishvalan Civil War, she knows her stuff when it comes to Combat Injuries.

    Roy Mustang
Evelyns elder brother and later on also her superior officer in the army. While he comes off as a bit vain and as a womanizer to people who do not know him, Evelyn sees how much the Eastern Rebellion still haunts him. Before joining the army, Roy used to be a pretty hopeful man, confident that he could do good with becoming a state alchemist. Ideals which were ultimately shattered when he returned from Ishval. His plight was one of Evelyn's main motivations for joining the army. He is also mostly in charge of cleaning up the messes his sister makes while working with the millitary, a fact that irks him to no end.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Older brother variety, when he and Evelyn were still younger.
  • The Atoner: Seeks to atone for the atrocities he comitted at Ishval, by working his way up the ranks, becoming Fuhrer and bringing all of the participants in front of the court, himself included.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Literally embodies this trope before he leaves for Ishval and even after his return it still shows, but in a different light.
  • Happily Adopted: He and Evelyn grew up with their aunt, after their parents died.

The Team

    Riza Hawkeye
Roys bodyguard, assistant and friend. She got to know him and later also Evelyn when Roy trained with her father Berthold Hawkeye. Just as Evelyns brother, she was sent to serve in the Eastern Rebellion, which broke her just as badly. Evelyn did not figure out her involvement until later though. Riza remains unaware of Evelyns intentions to rescue the Ishval veterans from execution, the same as her brother. The fact that relations between the two women have cooled down since the Ishvalan civil war, is not the only reason for this.

  • The Ace: Her gun expertise hardly knows any borders. Combined with physical fitness and intelligence on many matters and excessive control over her emotions, she is often hailed as the perfect soldier.
  • Broken Ace: Even if she is hailed as the perfect soldier, her duty at Ishbal broke her just as badly as it broke Roy, if not worse, since Roy can still count on his sister.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Evelyn and Riza where pretty good friends back when Roy was still training with her father. Relations have cooled down since the Eastern Rebellion though.
