* {{Hypocrite}}: Ozpin constantly expresses his faith in humanity and believing in their ability to overcome adversity and their willingness to stop the worst people from causing chaos. However, despite this, he doesn't trust humanity enough to share his knowledge and secrets — not even with those who are putting their lives on the line for his quest to defeat Salem. When Ozpin insists that he be the only person to carry the Relic and Ruby asks him if his talk of having faith in humanity means everyone except the very team that's putting their lives on the line for him, he tries to explain that she's misunderstood his action. However, all it does is convince Ruby that she needs to ask the Relic of Knowledge to reveal what Ozpin is hiding.

Realistic consequences for actions is not Reality Ensues. Reality Ensues is for when what would normally be a typical trope being played straight instead is subverted through realistic events rather than an unrealistic fictional plot element or device.

* RealityEnsues: Ozpin has been trying to defeat Salem for thousands of years. He's tried being open and honest in the past, only to have been betrayed to such an extent that he has learned to guard his secrets and only spoon-feed information as necessary. As a result, people now struggle to trust Ozpin because of the dangerous secrets he keeps withholding from them which increases the likelihood of people abandoning him, and this further increases his mistrust of sharing information. This vicious circle that Ozpin is trapped in causes the confrontation between him and Team RWBY that leads to Jinn being asked to reveal the truth.

Everyone mistrusts him here, but the true Broken Pedestal moment happens in Episode 4. I've removed this one in favour of keeping the entry that's on Episode 4's page.

* BrokenPedestal: Yang and Weiss get impatient with Ozpin's lies and half-truths and insist on full disclosure immediately. When Ozpin tries to calm the situation down by suggesting they need to accept that his decisions are based on rationale and experience, they aren't placated. Even Oscar sides with the girls by temporarily wresting just enough control of his body back to tell them how to summon Jinn so that she can reveal what Ozpin's hiding. When Jinn inadvertently reveals that Ozpin lied about the number of questions she could ask, all Ozpin can do is appeal to Ruby not to ask the question he knows they all want answered. The moment triggers Qrow into stepping forward, only to find Weiss and Yang pulling weapons on him, and Blake ready to back them up. However, instead of defending Ozpin as they expect, he simply tells Ruby to do whatever she thinks is right. At that point, it's clear that Ozpin has lost everyone's support -- even Oscar and Qrow's.

Cleaning up inaccuracies and grammar. Salem isn't the Was Once A Man trope because she's never had a monstrous form, she's been Ambiguously Human all along. Removed the Wham tropes for being misuse. Wham requires no foreshadowing, no set-up, and no ability of the fans to be able to guess it was coming. It has to completely change the direction of the plot, story or scene without any prior warning or build-up. Everything that happens in this episode is built-up, most of it is foreshadowed, and a lot of it was guessed in advance by fans. What The Hell Hero misuse.

Liar Revealed misuse; it's an internal reveal trope for when the audience knew the protagonist was maintaining a facade and tension of the plot is building up to the characters finding out about it — this lie was told to the audience as well as the characters, and is not the issue the plot tension is building around. Lack Of Empathy is a Zero Context Example and misuse; the money came from the person she murdered. Given that Maria is learning about Jinn at the same time everyone else is learning about Jinn, and we have no idea what she did or didn't know prior to that (given that we know she secretly arranged to be stranded with the protagonists), she isn't Locked Out Of The Loop. No Except Yes misuse. Removed speculation from Not Quite Dead. Removed Properly Paranoid given that Ozpin's secrets are currently getting him into trouble rather than helping him.

* LiarRevealed: Before leaving the safe house, Ozpin explains that the Relic of Knowledge can answer any question, but only three every hundred years, shortly afterwards claiming that all three have been asked this century. When Ruby is told to summon Jinn by Oscar from the Relic, Jinn reveals she only answered ''one'' question this century, shortly after Ozpin tries to prevent her from talking (which she ignores).
* LackOfEmpathy: Cinder, as usual.

'''Cinder:''' It was somebody's.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Maria has no idea as to what's going on, and when Jinn first appears, she adjusts her eyes to make sure she isn't hallucinating.
* MeanwhileInTheFuture: Right before Cinder meets Lil. Miss Malachite, a news report of the villains present for the attack on Haven Academy is seen, stating they've been missing for about a month now. Last episode, Qrow said before sending his letter to Ironwood that only two weeks have passed since the attack. Meaning, Cinder's plot takes place, at minimum, two weeks after Team RWBY's plot. Additionally, it's revealed that a "big guy" (likely referring to Hazel) has also been asking for RWBY a week prior to Cinder.
* MuggedForDisguise: Cinder kills the woman who first sees her and takes her clothes and money.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: As Ozpin reveals, he's been betrayed so many times across the eras that he never fully trusts anyone with all his secrets, and he freaks out when team RWBY are about to learn something he's kept to himself. Qrow takes this poorly.
* NoExceptYes: Maria objects when Yang calls her "defenseless", saying that she's just a bit hard of hearing... and blind without her eyes... which are in need of repair. She then admits that she sees Yang's point.
* NotQuiteDead: As it turns out, Cinder's alive and well - there was a lake at the bottom of the Relic room and her icy tomb landed there. Interestingly, while she's underwater, despite no longer being encased in ice, she's struggling to even move until she activates her powers, which follows the implication from last volume where Raven seemed to freeze her from the inside out. Which raises the question of how she survived ''that''.

Early Bird Cameo removed for being irrelevant to this episode. It needs to be troped in the correct place, which isn't here. There are a lot of lonely-girl-in-tower fairy tales, the tiny bit mentioned in this episode gives us absolutely no indication that it's definitely Rapunzel. The Fairytale Motif and Shout Out references are being troped on the Shout Out sub-page. Removed Foreshadowing because they're all on the wrong page. Rewrote Hypocrite for being inaccurate. Removed Know When To Fold Em because it's extremely ambiguous as to whether Qrow intended to defend Ozpin and folded or intended to support Ruby from the outset and was simply misinterpreted by the Weiss and Yang.

We're not at the Zero Percent Approval Rating trope yet. The gang were angry, but still trying to convince him to trust them enough to stop keeping secrets. If this trope does become relevant one day, it won't be troped in this episode. Ruby's question isn't an Armor Piercing Question. Removed Malachite from the Continuity Nod because the episode makes no attempt to connect the three characters. Yang's reference is plot continuation so it's not Continuity Nod. Removed the reference to Cinder's strength in her Grimm arm before it's shoehorning Continuity Nod. Removed Character Development for being shoehorning and inaccurate — Malachite makes it clear she doesn't think Cinder's using a polite or respectful tone, and Cinder's instinctive reaction is identical to her reaction to Salem, meaning that Salem's lesson (which Malachite shares) hasn't yet sunk in for Cinder. If she does have character development, this episode is far too early to claim it.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Combined with BrokenPedestal, no one among Team RWBY, Qrow, Oscar, and Maria seems willing to trust Ozpin. Weiss, Blake, and Yang were already treading carefully with him, Qrow is losing faith in him, Oscar knows what he's thinking and is FightingFromTheInside, Maria doesn't know him, and even Ruby is growing tired of his lies and half-truths.

** When Ruby asks if all the times Ozpin talked about having faith in humanity, it was for everyone else's sake. Ozpin's only reply is that that was not what he meant to suggest before asking for Ruby to hand him the relic. He doesn't really give a clear answer, but given the way that he talks about Leo and the people who defected from his side before... It carries the implication that Ruby's not wrong.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Jinn is completely naked except for her chains, but lacks nipples or genitalia.

Even Qrow seems to have become pretty disillusioned with Ozpin, given his look of utter shock when Jinn reveals that Oz lied to them about the questions she could answer, and how quickly he backs down from defending Ozpin.
