* Ardyn from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'' fits this trope to a T. He was a healer of a plague that turned people into monsters, but at the cost of him taking in several of them into his own being. He was ostracized and shunned for this and forgotten by history.

* Allen Walker from ''Manga/D.Gray-man'' falls into this when he learns that the Noah descendant, Nea D. Campbell, had selected his body as his new vessel with the intention of taking over the body. This causes conflicts within Allen's superiors to the point he is imprisoned by them. Eventually, Allen is forced to leave his allies and fight Nea alone.

Then, they discover something about themselves. Maybe they try to ignore their jealous feelings when they get caught in a LoveTriangle. Maybe they wake up from a dream revealing their [[FreudWasRight suppressed inner desires]]. Or maybe they just can't bring themselves to forgive someone who wronged their loved ones. Whatever the case, when they discover this about themselves, there's a good chance that they will enter a bout of depression, or worse, completely FreakOut. Oftentimes, their friends have a hard time understanding what the big deal is. HumansAreFlawed, after all, and because they're [[NiceGuy just so nice]], they never held anyone else to the same moral standards.

* This trope is the main difference between ''Manga/FruitsBasket'''s adaptations. In the original manga, Tohru is eventually revealed to have ''severely'' low self-esteem and an unhealthy inability to move on from her mother's death. In the anime, she's a straight up PuritySue who never goes through CharacterDevelopment and has barely any influence on the main plot. In both versions, she obsessively sidelines her own needs and problems- ostensibly because she wants to take care of [[DysfunctionJunction her friends]], but really because she can't face her trauma. (In the manga's finale, she confronts [[JerkassWoobie Akito]], and [[spoiler:forgives her]], realizing that Akito's cruelty is as false as Tohru's happiness.)

* ''{{Frasier}}'' ventures into this quite often, and it gets PlayedForLaughs most of the time. For example, Niles once had lunch with his ex-wife, and lied about it to his current wife. [[HilarityEnsues One lie led to another]], and he felt so guilty it made him hyperventilate.

* Taki of ''MaidenRose'' CantHaveSexEver thanks to his status as MessianicArchetype, so when he falls in love with Klaus things really go downhill for him as he struggles between his conscience and his desires.

* Invoked word-for-word in the first opening to the ''Manga/DeathNote'' anime. (''Douishite? Boku wa kowarita Messiah?'') Suitable, too, since [[VillainProtagonist Light]] starts out as a KnightTemplarBigBrother, UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans, but sympathetic character, but goes [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope totally insane]] when he discovers that yes, he has actually killed people.

* In ''Manga/OnePiece'', [[spoiler:[[SpoiledSweet Princess Shirahoshi]]]] goes through this, when she [[spoiler:leaves her family's protection to visit the Sea Forest]]. She gets over it with some encouragement from Luffy, though.

** Well, actually only vampires have a [[KarmaMeter Morality Meter]], and that is because of [[EnemyWithin The Beast]] that keeps pushing them to commit greater depravities. Human characters are probably not at risk of losing morality under that system unless something truly exceptional happens, and other supernaturals have different Karma Meters.

* The House Elves from ''Literature/HarryPotter'' will physically punish themselves for every wrong they commit, sometimes even for ones they ''contemplated'' committing. Justified, in that they had servitude so deepy engrained into them that they literally [[HappinessInSlavery don't know any better]]. Dobby shows that this has become almost a subconscious reflex, as even after gaining his freedom, he struggles with the compulsion to punish himself when something goes wrong.

** Orihime suffers two bouts of this.
*** When Ichigo fails to protect Orihime from Arrancar, Orihime fails to cure his depression but Rukia resolves it quickly. Orihime's jealousy over Rukia's usefulness and her own uselessness leaves her shocked and depressed because of how much she adores Rukia. [[CoolBigSis Rangiku]] makes her understand that she and Rukia are both equally useful to Ichigo, just in different ways. Rukia herself tells Orihime [[YouAreNotAlone she's not alone]], stands by her against Urahara sidelining her from battle and brings her out of her funk for good.

When Ichigo CameBackWrong to save her, she dissolves further, blaming herself for everything that's happened because she vowed to get stronger but didn't get strong enough.

** Ichigo works very hard to regain his lost power so that he can protect his friends, whose lives are in danger. However, the villain brainwashes his friends and families against him, and one of his friends turns out to have been working with the villain all along. He's left on his knees, ''sobbing'', a sword through his chest, his newly gained power stolen away, utterly defeated.

* Orihime Inoue of ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' fame has two bouts of this.
** The first one happens when she observes the bond between Ichigo and Rukia firsthand; up until then, she had just wanted Ichigo to be alright, and she's shocked and sad over her own jealousy and the guilt she feels ''over said jealousy too'' since she adores Rukia. [[CoolBigSis Rangiku]] cheered her up, telling her that ''both'' she and Rukia are important for Ichigo; then Rukia learns about it and tells Orihime [[YouAreNotAlone that she's not alone]] and [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming that she doesn't have to bring self down because she's a great person.]]
** The second, which is way more serious, happens as the corollary of her BreakTheCutie experiences in Hueco Mundo, when [[spoiler: Ulquiorra (the one who did his biggest share of breaking) kills Ichigo in front of her and Ishida, mutilates Ishida as well, and then verbally mocks Orihime as she tries to heal Ichigo]]; she splinters ''badly'' at that, and even more so when [[spoiler: Ichigo [[CameBackWrong comes back wrong]] ]], but ultimately gets better.
** [[spoiler: Ichigo Kurosaki]] also has recently had quite a phase as this, [[spoiler: though to be fair it was Tsukishima (and Ginjou)'s intention to break him systematically. (Just like Ulquiorra intended to break Orihime.)]]
