* FirstKiss: [[spoiler: with Hayate]].

In her efforts to become a great mangaka, she has allied with Hayate and Hinagiku to make up her doujin circle. Hayate mostly covers keeping her health up with her tiresome double-life while Hinagiku acts as an advisor, a very brutally honest on at that. Thanks to Hinagiku's research into what makes popular manga and the support of her and Hayate, Ruka has made incredible progress.

* InsaneTrollLogic: Normally cites information from a manga or video game to describe the situation she's currently in. She also make rather [[NeverMyFault pathetic excuses]] such as the reason she couldn't swim is because human body cannot float on water.

Sakuya Aizawa is a cousin of Nagi from Kansai. Like Nagi, Sakuya is very rich, with a similar personality - loud, arrogant, abusive of servants, and unwilling to accept defeat in anything. Nagi is one of the only people who can stand up to her, once again showing their similar personalities. Sakuya is the eldest daughter in her family with three sisters and one brother. Her illegitimate half brother Gilbert is one of the people who is constantly harassing Nagi for her fortune. Sakuya is obsessed with stand-up comedy,{ especially Manzai style. Sakuya initially encourages Hayate to become a comedian because she believes Hayate's life up to now is nothing more than a comedy, but later grows to admire him as the big brother she always wanted.

Hayate has had to work to support his parents' bad habits since the age of eight, always moving from job to job, as he gets fired when he's discovered to be underage. Hayate's dad is unemployed and his mother is a compulsive gambler, which leads inevitably to their bankruptcy. The characters in the series continually remark that Hayate looks poor and needy. He believes that everyone hates him, except children, though he doesn't think of children as being anything other than friends. He can also play the violin. Despite his terrible luck, Hayate lives up to the title of "combat butler" as he is proficient in repelling attacks from almost anything, including other butlers.

* {{Flanderization}}: His girlishness in the manga is a mild example. In the beginning, he could actually be considered boyish. After Chapter 8 (the first time he was crossdressed) RuleOfFunny dictated that this was the proper course, and then it snowballed from there. Chapters later, cue jokes about Hayate aspiring to be a wife, comments about his girly face/features, and moments like [[http://www.mangareader.net/hayate-the-combat-butler/313/8 these]]. This can also be seen in his character design (see ArtEvolution above).

* {{Doujinshi}}: The kid has the heart, if not the skill, to make a great manga artist... someday...[[spoiler: Realizing that she didn't have the skill hit her pretty hard.]]

** She believes that she is talented in writing manga after being compliment by Isumi. Becomes a TearJerker when she finds out the truth from an actual mangaka.
** In a Detective Conan parody chapter, Nagi tries to channel her inner Conan but she turn out worse than Kogoro Mouri and accuses everyone in the room except herself and the obviously dressed killer as the culprit. In the anime adaption, she even accuses the narrator.

* {{Tomboy}}: Her grammar is notable for not using ''any'' feminine pronouns, suffixes or idioms (aside from the gender neutral "watashi" to refer to herself) in the original Japanese version.

* AttractiveBentGender: Done to absurd levels to turn on elderly perverts and ''tigers.''.

* TheAce: Graduated from high school quite early, when she was around 13 years old. She also seems knowledgeable about quite a few things as well, except when it comes to love. When Hayate asks her for advice on it at one point, he accidentally offends her when he says she must have years of experience on that subject, and then states that he has [[ObliviousToLove no knowledge]] in that aspect at all.

* DitzyGeniua: She graduates from school at a rather young age and is among the most intelligent character in the story but her common sense is equal to that of Nagi, not knowing how to use public transports for example and bringing different types of kitchen knives while on a trip.

* ShanaClone: Has the distinction of being one of Big 4 {{Trope Codifier}}s of the trope. She's a small, flat-chested Type A {{Tsundere}} rich heiress with blonde hair tied into long GirlishPigtails and often wearing Grade S ZettaiRyouiki. She's voiced by Creator/RieKugimiya, on top of that. She definitely treats her love interest a lot better than most examples, though.

* TinyTyrannicalGirl: Downplayed. She doesn't boss Hayate around nor treats him as inferior like other {{Tsundere}} of her type, but she's still spoiled and expects Hayate to do anything she wants.

A mysterious young woman who appears in the movie, ''Heaven is a Place on Earth.'' [[spoiler:It is revealed that she is the spirit of Hayate's paternal grandmother. Suzune recreates an amusement park that Hayate once visited as a child with her. Suzune believed that Nagi was causing Hayate to suffer because of her spoiled attitude and that he only stayed with her because of the debt. Suzune gives Hayate a diamond that would pay off the debt so he could live his own life. Despite this, Hayate returns the diamond to her and says that he wants to pay off the debt on his own. Suzune then departs to the afterlife with a smile.]]

Having always been a Messiah-esque, wonderful little boy, he ends up [[DeusAngstMachina getting taken advantage of]] to the point where he gets ''fed up'' with optimistic ideas. He decides to finally "become a devil" and do something evil to get money. So he sets his sights on kidnapping Nagi, the rich little {{Ojou}}. Only... at every opportunity to do something evil, he [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain ends up going back to his selfless, old habits, and treats her ]]''[[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain very]]'' [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain nicely]]. To the point where his declaration that he wants to "run away with her (by kidnapping her)" causes her to misunderstand that he's confessing that he wants to elope with her.

Hayate's story is a bit more complicated when one considers how as a child [[spoiler: he met the god-like Athena, also a child, who made him her butler, healed his body and taught him many of his more valuable skills. Their PuppyLove ended tragically, though, when she engineered a fight to drive him away so that he would not take the suicidally dangerous risk of trying to free her. With this regret hanging over him, he began training himself in earnest in the hopes of one day meeting her again and apologizing.]]

* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:It wasn't an actual demon, but it was still pretty damn dangerous - so dangerous, it curbstomped Hayate, Isumi and Sakuya.]]
