->Voiced by: Creator/RyokoShiraishi (Japanese), Muriel Hofmann (English, Animax), and Jonel Bituin and Fourth Lee (Filipino, GMA Network)

Hayate has had to work to support his parents' bad habits since the age of eight, always moving from job to job, as he gets fired when he's discovered to be underage. Hayate's dad refuses to get a job and his mother is a compulsive gambler, which leads inevitably to their bankruptcy. The characters in the series continually remark that Hayate looks poor and needy. He believes that everyone hates him, except children, though he doesn't think of children as being anything other than friends. He can also play the violin. Despite his terrible luck, Hayate lives up to the title of "combat butler" as he is proficient in repelling attacks from almost anything, including other butlers.
-----
%% * AbusiveParents: WORST. PARENTS. EVER.
* AccidentalKidnapping: Inverted. Hayate starts off trying to kidnap someone and ends up rescuing her instead.
* AccidentalPervert: Practically once every other episode in the second season... you lucky bastard!!
* AllLovingHero: Played straight initially, but over time more people who can piss him off have appeared and his patience with the likes of Risa has waned.
* ArtEvolution: In the earliest chapters of the manga Hayate was more on the handsome side as opposed to his exaggerated prettiness later on (but was still a {{Bishonen}}). He also had [[MysticalWhiteHair white hair with blue shades]] instead of blue.
* AttractiveBentGender: Hayate in a skirt is hot enough to turn on elderly perverts and ''tigers.''
* BadassAdorable: Many characters say at one point or another that he looks so miserable that they all want to go "ImTakingHimHomeWithMe". He can wipe the floor with all but the most absurdly powerful of enemies without breaking much of a sweat.
* BadassInANiceSuit: 90% of the time, he's in his butler outfit.
* BadassInDistress: At times. Mostly through some fault of his own.
* BadLiar: As part of his overall [[AllLovingHero archetype]]. Doesn't stop him from trying in order to make people feel better.
* BattleButler: Of course! It's right there on the series title, even.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Trying to get him mad is extremely hard, if not impossible... [[TooDumbToLive doing so, howevever, is dangerous.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: His job, usually in the form of a DynamicEntry, or a DivingSave.
* BlatantLies:
** Cat. Definitely a cat.
** Ojou-sama has large breasts...
* BookDumb:
** Yet a ''master'' of a veritable arsenal of skills that no boy his age could or should have thanks to his life of slave labor.
** Averted by chapter 340 thanks to him taking his studies more seriously (around chapter 150) and some personal tutoring from Hinagiku, which really makes him an AcademicAthlete.
** His diversity of experience also means that while he may not be an {{Otaku}}, he understands every reference.
* BornUnlucky: Hayate has actually been confirmed as being the unluckiest person in ''the entire world''.
* BosssUnfavoriteEmployee: He is definitely this to Klaus. It's well established that there's a lot of other personnel in the Sanezenin Manor, and Klaus doesn't treats ''them'' with GeorgeJetsonJobSecurity (let alone the extreme, "dead or fired, I want you out" treatment he gets).
* BreakTheCutie: ''His whole life'' prior to becoming Nagi's butler was this.
* BrokenBird: Hides it beneath a [[ThePollyanna Pollyanna]] exterior.
* BrokenHero: Very broken. Besides the ParentalAbandonment and huge debt, he has a ''nasty'' DarkAndTroubledPast which included him being subject to the extreme neglect from his parents, as well as being kicked out of Athena Tennousu's mansion [[spoiler: after neglecting to tell her about his kiss with Izumi]]. Everyone at his school was driven to tears when he told his paragraph detailing on how he lives with his parents.
* CallOnMe: Calling his name [[OffscreenTeleportation summons him instantly]]. You don't even have to say it; just ''thinking'' it works too.
* CampStraight: He has an androgynous appearance (and moreso as the series progresses), a feminine voice, and has numerous feminine mannerisms and hobbies, to the extent that he can make women around him feel their femininity is being challenged. However, he has a harem of and is clearly towards girls.
* CassandraTruth: Until he met Nagi, ''nobody'' ever believed his testimony regarding his AbusiveParents. In fact, the last employer to fire him, specifically gave his final paycheck to his parents, and this is ''after'' Hayate made it clear to said employer that they forced him to take the job to pay their bills, and gambling debts, with the employer specifically saying "no parent would ever do that'' and then giving him the letter from his parents about [[{{Yakuza}} "the very nice people."]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Would you believe Hayate was a ChivalrousPervert? He was waaaay back in Chapter 2 of the manga. It was subtle and only popped up a few more times afterward until it was phased out completely.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower:
** Became '''this''' strong through the horrific and inhumane amount of child labor that he grew up with. [[spoiler: And the fact he betrayed Athena.]]
** [[spoiler:Athena helped him along before the betrayal as well, unlocking much of the potential that made it possible for him to be this strong in the first place.]]
* TheCharmer: Although he's completely oblivious to it, naturally. However, he has shown to be very capable of [[InvokedTrope invoking]] this if he wants.
* ChasteHero:
** Dammit, man, don't you realize just how many '''gorgeous''' girls worship the ground you walk on?
** [[http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae279/Bastion_Arcion/ButlersMeme.jpg He]] expressly states that he falls into this trope hard.
** Interestingly, if he wasn't a ChasteHero he'd probably be a CelibateHero, due both to his own [[HeroicSelfDeprecation low self-esteem]] and the fact that Athena convinced him you shouldn't have a girlfriend if you can't support her financially. [[PerpetualPoverty Which he can't]].
* ChickMagnet: Hayate's overall niceness, prettiness, and badassery have won him several female ([[EvenTheGuysWantHim among others]]) admirers.
* ClassicalAntiHero: With traits of KnightInSourArmor.
* CluelessChickMagnet: an entire chapter was dedicated to showing how oblivious he is of how his actions make girls swoon.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Suffers from this early on. [[CharacterDevelopment He later grows out of it]].
* CombatPragmatist: Once used silver utensils to effectively conduct electricity from a modified electrical cord in order to shut down a rogue robot.
* CommitmentIssues: He's unwilling to start a relationship because the massive debt his parents dumped on him makes him feel he can't fulfil the duties of a boyfriend. (His first girlfriend really screwed up his way of thinking.)
* CosmicPlaything: Hayate isn't quite sure why the universe hates him so much, but he knows it's true. His friends know it's true. His poor luck is so infamous that Wataru is able to successfully win at gambling by betting on the exact opposite of what Hayate would pick.
* CulturedBadass: One of his hobbies is playing the violin.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Blue hair and eyes.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Getting abused by his parents, abandoned by Athena for an innocent lie, and being later on abandoned must have put a huge strain on him if not for his {{determinator}} status.
* DespairEventHorizon: After his father stole his classmates' lunch money, Hayate ran away and contemplated suicide. Athena snapped him out of it.
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler:Aside from being on the receiving end of this from Athena, the poor boy was under the impression he would someday receive some horrible punishment just for having yelled at Athena when she was trying to kill him.]]
* DraggedIntoDrag: It's Maria's hobby to dress Hayate in girl's clothes. Why exactly Isumi thinks this is perplexing.
* DrillSergeantNasty: When giving the "harsh" lessons on how to ride bikes.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Enough that Nagi just can't help but force him into dresses every once in a while. Doesn't help that his ArtEvolution makes him more and more of one as the series progresses.
* DumbMuscle: Early in he series, he was kind of like this. Not outright stupid, but isn't somewhat bright, though that's because of a combination of [[TraumaCongaLine childhood]] [[DarkAndTroubledPast trauma]] and [[BookDumb being unable to study and attend school because of the numerous jobs he had to take to support his family]], although you probably couldn't tell from looking at him. However, he's much smarter and insightful than he lets on, and can actually be pretty intelligent when the situation calls for it. By chapter 150, he starts to take his studies more seriously and gets personal tutoring from Hinagiku, and by chapter 340 he's becomes a GeniusBruiser.
* DumbassNoMore: [[spoiler:By chapter 340 thanks to him taking his studies more seriously (around chapter 150) and some personal tutoring from Hinagiku.]]
* EffeminateVoice: Hayate is a guy who is girly-looking enough that people find him super cute in a dress. The fact that he's voiced by a woman in the anime only adds to his DudeLooksLikeALady traits.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: His generally androgynous appearance attracts many men, especially [[StalkerWithACrush Kotetsu]], much to his dismay.
* FailureKnight: [[spoiler:Hayate's first girlfriend was Athena and he was supposed to be her butler, but she drove him away and left him with crippling guilt.]]
* FightsLikeANormal: While he has superpowers, most of the time, he uses his own combat skills against enemies, largely due to his WillfullyWeak nature.
* {{Flanderization}}: His girlishness in the manga is a mild example. In the beginning, he could actually be considered boyish. After Chapter 8 (the first time he was crossdressed) RuleOfFunny dictated that this was the proper course, and then it snowballed from there. Chapters later, cue jokes about Hayate aspiring to be a wife and comments about his girly face/features. This can also be seen in his character design (see ArtEvolution above).
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: As a child, [[spoiler: he met the god-like Athena, also a child, who made him her butler, healed his body and taught him many of his more valuable skills. Their PuppyLove ended tragically, though, when she engineered a fight to drive him away so that he would not take the suicidally dangerous risk of trying to free her. With this regret hanging over him, he began training himself in earnest in the hopes of one day meeting her again and apologizing.]]
* GeniusBruiser: [[spoiler:Thanks to taking his studies more seriously (around chapter 150) and some personal tutoring from Hinagiku.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: In season 3 he speaks clearly obvious Engrish to a hostage that Yukiji had just held, though the hostage perfectly understands what he is saying[[note]]According to Yukiji, he's able to speak English fluently thanks to [[FridgeBrilliance his education at Hakuo Academy]][[/note]].
* GrievousHarmWithABody: When a Great White Shark attacks Nagi, Hayate beats it senseless ... [[ShamuFu with another shark]], which had been trying to devour ''him'' (and which is big enough that it could've swallowed him whole).
* HealingFactor: Can regenerate quickly from losing a lot of his blood.
* HeartbrokenBadass: He's still haunted by [[spoiler:his betrayal with Athena, hence why he think's he's always unworthy of his harem]].
* HeroicSelfDeprecation:
** One of the reasons why he hasn't hooked up with anyone yet is that he felt he didn't deserve any of them, [[spoiler: due to Athena's teachings]]
** It goes even beyond that. The reason Hayate is completely ObliviousToLove isn't so much that he's dense, but rather that he has such low self-esteem that he's convinced himself that no girl would be foolish enough to fall for him. Especially, in his own words, not 'amazing' girls like Hinagiku or [[spoiler: Luca]].
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: In the beginning, his horrific upbringing was played straight as a source of laughs. But the more we [[MoralEventHorizon learned of parents' antics]], the more they weren't [[AvertedTrope played for laughs anymore]], especially as we see how [[CerebusRetcon broken they left]] [[StepfordSmiler Hayate]] in the present.
* HonorBeforeReason: Sometimes. Not so much later on in the series.
* HumbleGoal: Hayate's life goal is to have a small apartment with the necessary amenities and nobody chasing him.
* IdiotHair: Subverted, since he's now an AcademicAthlete.
* ImprobableAge: He has an immense amount of life experience from weapons training to art appraisal to writing manga that initially shocks most of the people who know him.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Why he's inept when it comes with love.
* TheInsomniac: He sleeps about 15 minutes a night, spending the rest cleaning, training, and studying, in that order.
* IronButtMonkey: [[NormallyIWouldBeDeadNow If he wasn't he would be dead by now]].
* KidHero: Teenager to be exact. He has been working on this since he was an actual kid, thanks to his asshole parents.
* TheKirk: Most definitely tries to see the nice side to everybody -- [[spoiler:the only people he outright ''hates'' are his parents, and in Hayate's defense, the actions they commit on-screen are already enough to make even the most saintly amongst the audience to loathe them, and him having to tolerate all of that in the flesh for years...?]]
* KnightInSourArmor: Becomes more obvious later in the manga as we see just how utterly cynical he has become, due to his horrid childhood. He is under no illusion that he's going to change things or that any of the antagonists are going to reform their ways, and sometimes even shows weariness from all of the messes he has to clean up. But even when he isn't needed to rescue someone from true danger he still goes to great lengths to help even the jerks in the cast with mundane things. Why? Because it is a butler's duty and simply the right thing to do.
* LightningBruiser: Very fast, strong, and resilient, and even has a signature move based on the trope.
* MartialPacifist: Most of the time, he would prefer not to fight, but he will if necessary.
* MasterSwordsman: To the point where he is able to [[SingleStrokeBattle one-shot]] a beast over at Greece.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: At least kidnapping ''was'' Hayate's original plan. Having always been a wonderful little boy, he ends up [[DeusAngstMachina getting taken advantage of]] to the point where he gets ''fed up'' with optimistic ideas. He decides to finally "become a devil" and do something evil to get money. So he sets his sights on kidnapping Nagi, the rich little {{Ojou}}. Only... at every opportunity to do something evil, he [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain ends up going back to his selfless, old habits, and treats her ]]''[[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain very]]'' [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain nicely]]. To the point where his declaration that he wants to "run away with her (by kidnapping her)" causes her to misunderstand that he's confessing that he wants to elope with her.
%%%* MysticalWhiteHair: Pre-ArtEvolution.
* NiceGuy: Very much so. It takes until the WhamEpisode barrage of the latter part of the series to have him state that he hates anybody, and considering the fact that it's his parents he's talking about only makes it a '''very''' well-justified hatred.
* NighInvulnerability:
** Gets hit by cars, trucks, giant robots, etc and recovers. [[spoiler:Thanks to a magic spell by Athena unlocking his potential.]]
** His self-imposed nightly TrainingFromHell is probably the larger reason.
* NoSocialSkills: As a result of harsh discipline from [[spoiler:Athena]] and his horrid upbringing from his parents.
* ObliviousToLove: This pretty much facilitates the plot. The full version of the second season's second ED even has a brief conversation between him and Nagi where the latter concludes that "You don't know what love is."
* ParentalAbandonment: To put it lightly. He seems to be rather okay with it [[spoiler:until you find out it's because he stopped having any faith or love for them long, long ago. When asked by Sakuya if he would ever go back to them, she immediately gets a flat reply of 'Never. There are no second chances.']]
* ParodySue: The perfect guy in every respect except for his '''own''' personal happiness. He just gets more and more perfect as time goes on apart from his luck.
* PerpetualPoverty: Has suffered through this ever since his childhood. 150,000,000+ yen debt aside, if he is ever given any money he will certainly lose it. Even people around him seem to spontaneously lose money just by being in his proximity. Later chapters of the manga even give him the title “God of Poverty”.
* ThePollyanna: Makes you wonder how ''many'' unhealed mental scars he must have born with to keep on ''smiling'' after what he has been through.
* PoorCommunicationKills: The only person who could turn his declaration of kidnapping into a LoveConfession.
* ProneToTears: He has his moments. Then again, [[AbusiveParents can]] [[SocialServicesDoesNotExist you]] [[TraumaCongaLine blame]] [[JustifiedTrope him]]?
%%%%* TheProtagonist
* PuppyLove: With Athena when they were six.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to Hinagiku's blue, opposite of their hair colors.
* ReiAyanamiExpy: Believe it or not, he fits as this, albeit an unusual case where the stoic[=/=]emotionless demeanor is replaced with a [[ThePollyanna perpetually happy one]][[note]]though said personality is also a coping mechanism for his horrid life[[/note]]. Aside from that, he has the short blue hair, blue eyes, fair skin, DarkAndTroubledPast (what with [[TykeBomb being raised as a warrior]] by Athena), NoSocialSkills, and UndyingLoyalty to Nagi.
* RenaissanceMan : Good cook, housekeeper, mechanic, can even identify fake works of art with one glimpse, and [[spoiler: is proficient in swords and weaponry since childhood]].
* SingleStrokeBattle: Thanks to his swords proficiency.
* SocialServicesDoesNotExist: His borderline {{Tearjerker}} school report is actually the opening quote for ''that'' page (nervous laugh).
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: Hayate is aware that Tama, Nagi's pet tiger, is capable of talking (due to the latter casually striking up a conversation with the former, which does surprise him at first), and utilizes that ability from time to time, while keeping everyone else LockedOutOfTheLoop that Tama can in fact talk, such as when Hayate has him talk to Armaggeddon, a dog in episode 3 of season 4, to find out where the money in the suitcase the dog took went.
* StepfordSmiler: Later chapters/episodes have implied that his kindness and decency are coping mechanisms he developed to cope with the harsh, nay, ''downright vicious'' realities of his life rather than his fundamental personality.
* StupidSexyFlanders: One of the running gags on the story is how attractive he is... [[SweetPollyOliver especially when he's dressed as a girl]].
* SuperSpeed: He can outrun at least a bullet train.
* SuperStrength: He can lift at least a car with little difficulty.
* TaughtByExperience: If something that he's very good at and didn't involve training, it will usually be this.
* TookALevelInBadass: His whole life has been spent doing this.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Seems to have taken this in Chapter 444[[spoiler: when he finds out how his older brother really acts.]]
* TrappedByGamblingDebts: Not his own, but his lousy parents. [[spoiler:Luckily, though he ultimately gets out of it by chapter 510.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: His ''entire childhood''! For the most part, Hayate is a "[[IronWoobie Result A]]", and a subversion of "[[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Result B]]" (because he is a terrible criminal). Although, he has shown hints of being a "[[KnightInSourArmor Result E]]" [[StepfordSmiler deep down]].
* TykeBomb: He was given TrainingFromHell by Athena in his early childhood.
* UnluckyEverydude: Emphasis on '''unlucky'''.
* UnwantedHarem: He's not so much clueless about it, as he doesn't think he's worthy of it. Due to what happened with Athena.
-->"I said you lucky ''oblivious'' bastard!!"
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:Calls out on his brother in chapter 453 after being told that he made the competition as a joke and on his focus over money than on taking care of him, telling him that if he is so obsessed with money then he should work instead of saving people]].
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Maria and Isumi are convinced that this is his "hobby".
* WillfullyWeak: Pretty much the reason why he gets moments of TheWorfEffect and WorfHadTheFlu. Had he actually showed his full powers and skills, then he would have [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] every enemy he's ever encountered. Another reason is that he doesn't want to fight in the first place leading to him putting up with way more than he'd have to simply because he doesn't fight back.

[[folder:Nagi Sanzen'in]]
[[quoteright:147:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nagi_sanzenin.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/RieKugimiya (Japanese) and Lily Truncale (English, Animax)

Nagi is the only heir to the Sanzen'in fortune. She's a tomboy and anime/manga otaku, who's a quick learner, good at finance, and creates her own manga, but she's totally incapable of cooking, afraid of dark places, and has absolutely no sense of direction. She also calls her tiger, Tama, a cat. Her only surviving family is her grandfather, whom she doesn't like, so she regards Maria as a mother or older sister figure, and warns Hayate not to touch Maria in any indecent way or she'll never forgive him. She has a crush on Hayate, and has misunderstood that Hayate loves her since they first met.
-----
* ACupAngst: "Aww, come on little one!! You're too ''[[JustifiedTrope young]]'' to be worried about things like that!! Sakuya's an exception, ''not'' the norm!!"
* AccidentalTruth: When she met Hayate, she assumed he was protecting her from "the very nice people" despite the fact that he was actually trying to kidnap her. By the end of the first chapter, her initial impression is proven correct.
%%* ArrangedMarriage: With Wataru.
* BerserkButton:
** Do not '''ever''' refer to her [[{{Doujinshi}} hard work]] as "picture diaries", [[ClingyJealousGirl or seduce Hayate in front of her]]. Oh, and '''never''' remind her of her [[ACupAngst horizontally challenged figure]] if you value your life.
** Or, for that matter, [[TheNapoleon her vertically challenged figure.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: The Veronica to Isumi's Betty and Wataru's Archie.
* BrilliantButLazy: Jumped-grades to First Year High School at ''thirteen'' years old, but absolutely '''loathes''' going to school.
%%* CannotSpitItOut: Her endearingly chaste love for Hayate...
* ClingyJealousGirl: Doesn't like it when other girls express their interest in Hayate, nor when he mentions doing things for other girls, such as learning a lethal technique to show off to Hinagiku.
* CluelessDetective: In a ''Manga/CaseClosed'' parody chapter, Nagi tries to channel her inner Conan but she turn out worse than Kogoro Mouri and accuses everyone in the room except herself and the obviously dressed killer as the culprit. In the anime adaption, she even accuses the narrator.
* CoolBigSis: To Tsugumi.
* CovertPervert: Which contrasts with the ''filthy'' fantasies she has of the things she and Maria would like him to wear. Sakuya even calls her out fairly early on what her idea of 'playing' is.
* ADayInHerApron: Every time Nagi is alone in the house she always somehow ends up destroying it. In one instance, she lets a cow in. When she attempts to 'help out' so she has more life experience, she seems unable to do anything without destroying something. Hayate and Maria are forced to watch as their amount of clean-up work starts to mount.
* EskimosArentReal: Until she first sees a subway train with Kazuki, she thinks that they're fictional.
* FriendOrIdolDecision:
** Nagi chooses to [[spoiler: destroy the Stone of Bonds, even though that means she will lose her inheritance, because its existence caused Hayate pain. She then tells him that he was ''her'' butler, not her money's.]]
** As of the 2012 anime[[spoiler:, she has her inheritance back. The question is now 'What was the price for its return?']]
* GiftedlyBad: She is convinced that she's an amazing manga writer even though only one other person can even understand her bizarre over the top storylines, let alone appreciate them. However, eventually she sees an actual professional's manuscript and realizes just how bad she really is, which is absolutely devastating for her. She isn't special at all and doesn't know how to do anything, even the one thing she really thought she had a talent for.
* GirlishPigtails: She has her hair tied in two long twin tails, which is a typical trait of {{Tsundere}} girls.
%%* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold
* HighHopesZeroTalent: She has the heart to make a great manga artist someday, but sadly, not the talent. Realizing that she didn't have the skill hit her pretty hard.
* {{Hikikomori}}: Stays inside even on vacation, proudly declaring it's her duty as a 'pro hikikomori', and is called the Hikikomori Queen by other characters. Less traditional as she's "shut-in" in {{big fancy house}}s-- but the desocialization is still the same. Unusually in her case, she can make a living off investments.
%%* IdleRich
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: She was crushed when she realized she wasn't born as a gifted genius mangaka. Despite several setbacks, however, she has retained her dream of becoming a truly special and successful creator of manga.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Normally cites information from a manga or video game to describe the situation she's currently in. She also make rather [[NeverMyFault pathetic excuses]] such as the reason she couldn't swim being that the human body cannot float on water.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Self-centered and spoiled she may be, but she does care for her butler and maid/mother figure.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Hayate apparently looks very much like her mother ''and'' father. How much he looks like her mother is actually commented on by another character.
* LonelyRichKid: Her parents are dead and because she hates going outside, she doesn't have many friends either. She makes more friends as the story progresses, thanks to Hayate pushing her to go outside and be with others.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: When she and Hayate first meet, he intends to kidnap her, but isn't good at it and Nagi mistakes his kidnapping attempt as a confession of love.
* TheMcCoy: Also to Sakuya's [[TheKirk Kirk]] and Isumi's [[TheSpock Spock]].
* MegatonPunch: Her initial responses to Hayate's AccidentalPervert moments.
* {{Moe}}: [[invoked]]It's practically stated outright by ''both'' sides of the fourth wall (and WordOfGod) that her design is catered to {{Lolicon|AndShotacon}} tastes.
* NeverMyFault: She would blame almost all her mistakes on somebody else (usually Hayate) for any mistakes she had made. One time she blames Hayate for the mess she made in the kitchen when he wasn't even around.
* NoSenseOfDirection: It's even on her profile in the manga. It's not as problematic since she rarely tries to go anywhere alone. She also has the normal version, rather than Isumi's super-powered one.
* ObliviousToLove: Inverted. Ever since she mistook Hayate's attempt to kidnap her as a love confession, she has been convinced that Hayate is madly in love with her, completely oblivious to the fact that he doesn't think of her that way at all.
* {{Ojou}}: She's the sole heir to the Sanzenin fortune and lives in a BigFancyHouse.
* {{Otaku}}: Very much so.
* PartingWordsRegret: Nagi ''really'' wishes that the last time she spoke to her mother was not in the form of a tantrum-fuelled argument.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to Wataru's blue
* ReplacementGoldfish: While there's no mutual romance thus far, a lot of the ShipTease during the latter half of the Athena arc pointed out (explicitly ''and'' implicitly) just how many similarities Nagi shared with Hayate's first love, Athena.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: Her staggering wealth and shut-in lifestyle combine to make her very inexperienced with many aspects of everyday life. The first chapter shows her failing to operate a vending machine because she can't grasp it will only accept such small currency as coins.
* SequentialArtist: Nagi is an aspiring manga artist and keeps trying to win the Rookie award for a magazine. However, her manga are completely nonsensical.
%%* SpoiledBrat
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: Downplayed. She doesn't boss Hayate around nor treats him as inferior like other {{Tsundere}} of her type, but she's still spoiled and expects Hayate to do anything she wants.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Isumi's Girly Girl.
%%* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak
* TownGirls: The Butch to Sakuya's Neither and Isumi's Femme.
* {{Trekkie}}: The "Franchise/{{Gundam}} fanatic" variant used in Japanese media.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type for sure, though at least more endearing and less bitchy than most of Creator/RieKugimiya's other roles.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eye shape is one of the traits that identify her as a {{Tsundere}}.
* UptownGirl: For Hayate.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Tries to claim that since she is the heroine of the story, she is bound to defeat Ruka at the next doujinshi event. She also thinks that she fits the attributes of a heroine only for Ayumu to point out that the poor but nice and hardworking Ruka fits better than the (formerly) rich but spoiled, lazy and rude girl.
* YaoiFangirl: To improve the story of the shopping festival's stage show, she suggests having the two male leads fall in love with each other. When one of the actors asks whether this would be alright since they're both men, Nagi exclaims: "It doesn't matter! In fact, that makes it even better!"

->Voiced by: Creator/RieTanaka (Japanese) and Candice Moore (English, Animax)

Maria is Nagi's maid and surrogate older sister/mother, both appearing and acting in a manner more mature than people typical of her age. Because of this, even people near to her speak of her as if she is older than she really is, a pet peeve for her. A phrase she commonly responds with is "I'm still a fresh seventeen year old". She is the character with the most common sense in the series, and is the only one who understands the problem between Hayate and Nagi. She appears to be the one in charge of everything in Nagi's manor, since everyone from the head butler to the SP either obeys or fears her (or both in some cases). She's good at general housework and likes games of all kinds, though she's scared of "the dark life-form that exists in the kitchen and other places". She also proved capable of self-defense techniques in times of need.
-----
* TheAce: She was StudentCouncilPresident at the age of 10 and graduating as a valedictorian, capable of self defense techniques, and good at general housework.
* BerserkButton: "Are you implying that I'm NOT 17 years old..."
* BrainyBrunette: She has dark brow hair and is so smart that she graduated as a valedictorian at Hakuo Academy at a young age.
* ClarkKenting: Subverted, as her attempts to disguise herself with spectacles has the unintended effects of turning her into a {{Meganekko}}, thereby attracting unwanted male attention '''and''' almost immediately being recognized by her intended quarries.
* CoolBigSis: She's a kind and reliable older sister figure to Nagi and Hayate.
* CovertPervert: Maria, just ''what'' have you been showing to Nagi to give her a mind as foul as yours? (Sweatdrop)
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: She has brown hair and matching brown eyes.
* CuteAndPsycho: Sometimes. And even the ''narrator'' behind the fourth wall is scared of her!!
* DitzyGenius: She graduates from school at a rather young age and is among the most intelligent character in the story but her common sense is equal to that of Nagi, not knowing how to use public transports for example and bringing different types of kitchen knives while on a trip.
* DoesntKnowTheirOwnBirthday: She's an orphan who was abandoned at a church. Since she doesn't know anything about her family or birth, her birthday was decided as December 24, the day she was found.
* GradeSkipper: She graduated from high school when she was around 13 years old.
* HiredHelpAsFamily: Although she's officially a servant of the Sanzen'in household, Maria is practically a big sister ''and'' mother to her mistress Nagi.
* ImprobableAge: She was StudentCouncilPresident at ''age 10''.
* {{Meido}}: She serves as Nagi's personal maid and is in charge of the housework in the mansion.
* MsFanservice: ''Especially'' in the manga. Chapter 309 even starts with two full pages of nothing but Maria bathing, for seemingly no reason other than because Hata-sensei had extra pages to fill. This is promptly lampshaded when the chapter begins proper.
* {{Omniglot}}: She knows 13 languages.
* OnlyOneName: She's the only character without a surname. This is because she never knew her parents. She was an orphan who was found next to the statue of St. Mary at a church, which is where she got her name.
* ParodySue: Maria seems have some traits of this. She was StudentCouncilPresident at 10, pretty enough to attract ''many'' males in the series, and is also skilled at domestic tasks. However, this is balanced out by her being inept at normal things (such as public transportation and public baths) since she's only known the comforts of the Sanzen'in wealth, and Hayate has frequently commented that she lacks common sense in these areas. She is also capable of being really petty once in awhile. Both her "perfect" qualities and limitations have also been played for comedy.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:She quits near the end of the series and surprisingly never shows up again, not even to give payoff on earlier plot threads like her birthday present from Hayate.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Actually reddish-brown, and subverted since she's [[NiceGirl nice]]. Played straight when she goes [[CuteAndPsycho crazy]].
* ASaintNamedMary: Maria is named after the Virgin Mary. As a child, she was discovered under a statue of her namesake in a church. Appropriately, she's a kindhearted mother figure to Nagi.
* SilkHidingSteel: A unflappable maid that runs the household because everyone is scared of her.
%%* TheSpock
* SproutingEars: When her boredom is relieved, cute dog ears pop up from her head.
* {{Tsundere}}: Has shown hints at being a Type B.
-->'''Hayate:''' You don't have to be so mean...
-->'''Maria:''' ''(in a huff)'' Tsun!!
* UnflappableGuardian: Even when facing against creatures that looked like outright monsters!
* YoungAndInCharge: She became a High School StudentCouncilPresident at age 10. Her classmates nicknamed her "Little President".
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Just don't mention it to her face. To be fair to her, it's not so much 'younger than she looks' (she's quite pretty) as 'younger than she ''[[PromotionToParent acts]]'''.

Klaus is the head butler of the Sanzen'in family, who is usually away on business. He was Yukariko's butler when she was alive. He once fell in love with Hayate without knowing that Hayate was forced to crossdress as a catgirl by Nagi and Maria. He is self-centered, has a low alcohol tolerance, doesn't do well with tobacco or women, and likes cars and bikes.
-----
* BadBoss: Among other reasons, one of his [[RunningGag Running Gags]] with Hayate involves him appearing ([[StealthHiBye sometimes out of nowhere]]) to explain that if Hayate cannot perform the latest impossible thing that is being asked of him (or he cannot overcome the latest inconvenience to his work, no matter how life-threatening or petty) [[GeorgeJetsonJobSecurity he will fire Hayate immediately]].
* BosssUnfavoriteEmployee: Hayate is this to him. Most of the jokes that involve Hayate and Klaus are about how Klaus wants Hayate fired ''now'', '''''dead''''' if needs be.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Double subverted. First, he shows up to stop [[MoneyFetish Himuro]] in an imposing manner... but then just opens a briefcase of money and presents it as an apology. It turns out this is an effective attack that causes Himuro to collapse bleeding and defeated.
* DemotedToExtra: And the series mocks him for it, too.
* EvilMentor: Sometimes.
* IWasQuiteALooker: He was quite handsome back when Nagi's mother was a child. Yes, he was young, too.
* JustAStupidAccent: Animax English dub only, where he's given a German accent.
%%* {{Manchild}}
* OutOfFocus: Appears less and less after a while, to the point that one time Klaus made his first reappearance after a long time, at which point Nagi said that she thought he'd died. He's finally given a more official reason for his long absences when he's called back to the Mikado estate after [[spoiler: Nagi's pendant is destroyed and she loses her family inheritance.]]
* ScaryShinyGlasses: He does this by default.

[[folder:Sanzenin Bodyguards]]

%%* AttentionDeficitOohShiny
* DumbMuscle: Not exactly the smartest people around but heaven help you if you are a one-time-villain threating Maria. Normally their size and numbers alone however will enough to scare people.
* GogglesDoNothing: Subverted as they all use sunglasses all the time.

[[folder:Hinagiku Katsura]]
[[quoteright:123:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinagiku_katsura.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ShizukaIto (Japanese) and Catherine Fu (English, Animax)

Hinagiku is the current student council president, and kendo club president, at Hakuō Academy, the school that Nagi, Isumi, and eventually Hayate attend. She is fifteen (later sixteen) and is an expert with swords, specifically kendo. She first meets Hayate when he gets lost on the huge Hakuō campus and invites him to the top of the clocktower, where only student council elites are allowed. She allows Hayate to call her by her first name, and also seems to be infatuated by him and his attractive personality. Hinagiku is sometimes referred to as being rather masculine for a girl by other characters in the series. Miki suggests this is because Hinagiku is seen as being "cooler" than the boys, and the fact that she was rather domineering at a younger age. Her athleticism, competitiveness, and leadership position all also probably contribute to this view. Despite having such strong traits, Hinagiku is actually terrified of heights.

Her backstory is nearly identical to Hayate's: She and her older sister were abandoned by their parents, Yukiji then managed to get them adopted by a former teacher of hers.

It should also be noted that she's popular enough as a character that the second season's ED is ''dedicated'' to her, with a ImageSong being sung to multiple scenes of her in various situations - looking perplexed at what's going on around her.
-----
* AcademicAthlete: She's the StudentCouncilPresident with the highest grades whenever they are mentioned as well as the [[KendoTeamCaptain Captain]] of the rarely-ever-mentioned Kendo Team. As seen in the school's athletic festival and marathon race, she trumps just about everyone at school with the possible exceptions of Hayate himself and her older sister Yukiji.
%%* TheAce
%%* ActionGirl
* ACupAngst: She's even ''more'' self conscious about it than Nagi-chan is.
%%* BadassAdorable
* BigDamnHeroes: When it isn't Hayate who saves someone, it's usually her or Isumi.
* BreakoutCharacter: In the Popularity Polls for the manga, Hinagiku came in the first place by a landside '''in every single contest.'''
* CannotSpitItOut: This trope must be contagious or something in this universe... in her case, it's because she believes that confessing to Hayate before he confesses to her would mean 'losing' to him. She does make an attempt several times, but it never goes right.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In her first few appearances, she was conceived simply as an older version of Nagi. She slowly morphed into a female version of Hayate, complete with a similar tragic backstory, ParodySue qualities and emotional denseness. While Hayate is mostly a NiceGuy, Hinagiku has a strong streak of {{Tsundere}}.
** The backstory at least was already there since Hata-sensei wrote the Katsura sisters' story before as a pilot. However, the early comparisons to Nagi have long since given way to comparisons to Hayate. See also, SugarAndIcePersonality and {{Tsundere}} below.
* CovertPervert: When [[DatePeepers spying on]] Hayate and Maria's NotADate with Ayumu, she imagines a rather ... ''vivid'' scenario of Hayate and Maria having sex.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: She has a massive amount of fangirls who give her piles of chocolates. Miki, the only one of her female admirers to be named, also appears to have a crush on her but knows Hinagiku wouldn't reciprocate even if she told her.
%%* FieryRedhead
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Responsible to Yukiji's Foolish.
* HappilyAdopted: She loves her adoptive parents and is quite satisfied with them, but every now and then gets depressed when thinking of her real parents.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Despite everything she can do, she seems to lack self confidence.
* HimeCut: More evident early on due to the shift in art style making her bangs more uneven (a bit longer on one side) but it takes her developing more femininity and modesty later on before she really grows into the more archetypal personality.
%%* KendoTeamCaptain
* MadeOfIron: Chiharu called her a Gundam when describing her to Luca.
* ModestyShorts: She frequently wears bike shorts under her skirt. Doesn't stop Fumi from claiming to have seen her panties though.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: It's not like she's trying to be BigDamnHeroes.
* LoveHurts:
** One of her biggest fears, and implied to be the source of/related to her more noticeable fear of heights. This is because of [[spoiler:her parents abandoning her and her sister with a massive debt a couple days before her sixth birthday]]. This fear is also why she was in such denial over her love for Hayate for so long, and when she finally admitted it to herself she realized that she was afraid of loving him because loving him might make him disappear.
** Naturally this has been a major theme in her character development, which is reflected in her being hurt as various points in the story due to her love for Hayate, with the infamous Silk Heart (Ch. 239) being the worst yet. There's been mixed signals on this front (i.e. things can work if you keep trying, or sometimes things just don't work out) so time will tell where Hina's story will end up.
* KnightInSourArmor - Much like Hayate her experiences have left her cynical, though not quite to his level, but she will nevertheless jump into action to help others even if she really rather wouldn't. She's actually more likely than Hayate to take action right away since she has an incredibly strong sense of justice which often leads to her involving herself in troublesome matters that she could have easily avoided...and will usually wish she did, though she has been shown to feel satisfied with a job well done.
* ParodySue: More so than Hayate and Maria. Her excellence in various skills ''are'' a bit too deliberate... in light of her agoraphobia and her newfound crush on Hayate.
* PromotionToParent: Even though [[{{Manchild}} Yukiji]], her [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl drunken lush]] of a twenty-EIGHT year old big sister is her ''nominal'' guardian, it's mostly the ''other'' way round.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Hayate's red
* RenaissanceWoman: She's Student Council president, an idol singer, expert in swords and kendo, masterful in fighting, demon slaying, and has many other skills.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She fits the cheery subtype and the romantic one. She even has a blue-haired love interest to boot.
* ShoutOut: [[http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110404131829/hayatenogotoku/images/thumb/a/a0/Katsura_Hinagiku_4.jpg/347px-Katsura_Hinagiku_4.jpg She has the power to revolutionize the world!]]
* StudentCouncilPresident: Is there anything this girl ''can't'' do?
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Earlier in the manga she was more cool and aloof, though still very competitive. Over time she has largely become more of an emotional {{Tsundere}} character.
* {{Tomboy}}: Although she's trying to shed the image, her friends continually press it on her. This is also one of her sources of insecurity toward her feelings for Hayate as she often doesn't feel she is feminine enough, though with her CharacterDevelopment she is making great strides by the Greece Arc.
%%* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak
* {{Tsundere}}: This part of her realllly isn't helped by the three class representatives going out of their way to annoy her or her mooch of a sister.
%%d* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes:
* WoodenKatanasAreEvenBetter: The Wooden Masamune she borrows from Isumi (which refuses to go back with her) is the only weapons she's really seen using [[spoiler:until the End of the World arc]] and it has the effect of drawing out the user's potential to the max.

Isumi is a black-haired (purple in the anime) girl who is always wearing a kimono. Another one of Nagi's close friends, she and Nagi met at a party a long time ago. When all the other children, Sakuya included, laughed at Nagi's first attempt at writing her own manga, Isumi took interest in it and asked Nagi how it ends; Nagi then asked Isumi (in a childish sense) to marry her. Like Nagi, Isumi is very rich. Unlike Nagi, Isumi is soft-spoken, kind, and can cook well. While she does not have an awful sense of direction, she constantly gets lost due to the fact that she is apt to forget her destination, though she is able to disappear from people's eyes instantaneously. She has feelings for Hayate and does not wish to see him sad.
-----
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: She usually gets lost because she gets distracted by stray spirits.
* BadassAdorable: With the emphasis on adorable but you should never forget the "badass" part. Seriously, DON´T. DO. IT!
* BerserkButton: How [[spoiler:Athena]] found out Isumi has a lot of pride in her abilities. You better not question them unless you´re a PhysicalGod!
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Nagi's Veronica and Wataru's Archie.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: If she is really pissed off, she can summon THIS.
* BigDamnHeroes: When it isn't Hayate who saves someone, it's usually her or Hinagiku.
* CloudCuckooLander: So out there she can actually ''understand'' Nagi-chan's comics.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: She may be TheDitz with NoSenseOfDirection, but if there are evil spirits lurking about, beware her talents at exorcism...
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Dark hair and eyes
%%* DemonSlaying
* HiddenDepths: She can operate helicopter and set up traps.
* HimeCut: She's a YamatoNadeshiko in a kimono who has parted bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and hip-length straight hair.
* HopelessWithTech: She doesn't understand how to use machines and electronic devices such as a cell phone or a vending machine. She just assumes they must be broken.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Invokes this trope when [[LetsGetDangerous getting serious.]]
* KimonoIsTraditional: She's a YamatoNadeshiko and is never seen wearing anything but a kimono.
* NiceGirl: one of the nicer character in the show.
* NoSenseOfDirection: ''None'' whatsoever, the poor little thing. She can end up ''[[OffscreenTeleportation anywhere]]''.

'''Isumi:''' That's right, things like this seem to happen maybe two or three times a year.\

* ObfuscatingStupidity: While her CloudCuckooLander rep seems mostly true, she does use it to her advantage sometimes. [[spoiler:It's revealed that she knew about Wataru's crush on her and just pretended not to until he got over it to avoid having to reject him.]]
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: In the final episode of the third season when [[spoiler: Tsugumi Ruri trys to stop her going to save Nagi and Hayate]]. Comes with BattleAura and delivered in a CreepyMonotone. All the more effective for the stark contrast to her normal personality.

* SuperDeformed: Isumi is probably drawn at least slight chibified more than she appears normally.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Nagi's Tomboy.
* TownGirls: The Femme to Sakuya's Neither and Nagi's Butch.
* AWizardDidIt: Either she or Athena are usually the explanation if one is given.
* YamatoNadeshiko: A soft-spoken, kind, fair-skinned, black haired girl with ''almost'' the HimeCut who can cook well and always wears a kimono. She would make a ''lovely'' wife.

-----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Acts hard-working, and a MouthyKid.
* ArrangedMarriage: With Nagi.
* ButtMonkey: To Nagi, and occasionally Isumi.
* CannotSpitItOut: Isumi-chan '''or''' Saki-chan!! [[spoiler:Eventually, he decides that he doesn't really love Isumi anymore and confesses to her that he ''loved'' her. He then asks Saki to always stay by his side.]]
* ChickMagnet: He has, mostly unwittingly, gathered the attention of several girls (Saki, "nun" Sonia, Aika, and possibly Sakuya), all of whom are older than he is.
* CovertPervert: Once sniffed Isumi's discarded stole, seems to know a lot about the fetishized {{meido}} archetype, and once asked Saki to "do a little twirl". Saki, thanks to drunkeness, also reveals that she knows about some ecchi books Wataru secretly owns and that he has a folder full of "indecent images" hidden among the system files in his PC.
* HopelessSuitor: Isumi remains completely unaware of his crush on her. After he accidentally blurted out how he felt when she was right behind him, he quickly took it back so now she thinks the confession was a joke. Worse yet, he seems to be one of the few that suspects or knows Isumi likes Hayate. [[spoiler:In the end, he decides to give up and focus on Saki and the family business.]]
* HypocriticalHumor: When Ayumu and Hinagiku found a stray kitten, Hayate borrowed money from Wataru to buy it milk. Wataru gave him the cash, but said, "I think it's a waste to spend money on saving a stray cat." But then he criticized Hayate's ''choice'' of milk, saying:
-->He hasn't been weaned yet, so take this one with ''lactoferrin'' instead.... And you'll need this little baby bottle to make it easier for him to drink it, right? And just in case, you should buy some kitty litter and this toy, here....

* ObliviousToLove:
** Not exactly a ChasteHero since he does like Isumi and has been revealed to have a slight {{Meido}} {{fetish}}. However, he seems mostly unaware of the feelings of the girls interested in him, at least the ones who haven't outright stated their interest.
** At least for the ones significantly older than him, it seems he knows about them, but tries to keep himself from being thought of as someone who LikesOlderWomen.

Yukiji is the twenty-eight year old sister of Hinagiku. She is a teacher at Hakuō Academy and doubles as a twenty-four-hour gate guard. She has a group of underachieving students who hang out with her a lot. She lives on the Hakuō campus. Loves alcohol.
-----
* ButtMonkey: Just as bad as Hayate on this matter, and exaggerated in the third season of the anime. Five episodes in, and she is featured as the butt of the joke, on every single episode whether its inside or outside of the Intro scene.
* TheChewToy: The only way you can explain her appearance in the third season of the anime.
* CoolBigSis: When she's actually being serious, she manages to hit this. For a good example, see WisdomFromTheGutter below
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Foolish to Hina's Responsible.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl
* IWasQuiteALooker: While her current appearance isn't exactly ugly except in universe, her High School self was so gorgeous that Hayate think it is photoshopped.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: To her credit, she is capable of ''some'' remorse for her irresponsible stupidity, but it's pretty rare. In one rare case, after Hayate threw his coat away with a hundred thousand yen in it, she managed to nab it, then returned the coat and money back to Maria after feeling guilty about taking money from her students.
* PerpetualPoverty: Due to her habit of spending a lot of her money on alcohol.

** Despite her crazy antics, her students also seem to like her teaching style, and she will often throw in little bits of trivia to go along with the subjects which they usually find interesting. So much so that in one episode during season 1, when the students mistakenly thought she was resigning as their teacher, they pleaded with her not to go [[spoiler:although in the end it turned out to be Makimura-sensei that wanted to quit, and ultimately reconsiders after she thought the students were pleading to her, and not Yukiji.]]

Shiori Makimura is a genius scientist with the Mikado Hyper Energy (M.H.E) Electronics Corporation as the Chief of Development, Humanoid Nursing and Battlefield Weapons Department, and Advanced Technology Development Division. Her specialties are computers and mechas. Her development team created Nursing Robot Eight and other mechas seen in the series. She is in fact so talented, that she even built a mecha when she was half asleep. In volume 3 (or episode 21), robot Eight asks her to be his girlfriend and she accepts. In volume 7 (or episode 23), Shiori is sent to teach at Hakuō Academy because her superiors believe she does not have enough heart. Even though she is a genius scientist, her robot designs (especially Eight) tend to have serious flaws, which is why she is transferred to Hakuō. Another weakness Makimura has is that she is often quite forgetful, completely forgetting about building Eight and overlooking the installation of a critical control chip in one of her mechas, which led to disastrous results.
-----

The most popular of the idiot trio, Izumi is the class representative for student council and her father heads the highest-ranking electrical manufacturer in Japan. A classmate of Hayate's at Hakuō, while she under performs in school, it is more out of a genuine lack of academic talent rather than laziness like the other two. She is also the younger twin sister of her butler Kotetsu, and her father tends to make a lot of unreasonable demands that involve her dressing up in various outfits.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: The trio like to call Hayate 'Hayata-kun'. [[spoiler:Although, oddly, Izumi also called him "Hayata-kun" when she first met him ''ten years ago'' -- she doesn't seem to remember this.]]
* AccidentalTruth: Miki and Risa accidentally give Izumi's dad the impression that Izumi is in love with Hayate, and just to stir up trouble, they don't bother correcting his misunderstanding. But Izumi's LuminescentBlush when the two laughingly explain this to '''her''' [suggests he's right after all.
* AscendedExtra: While still a supporting character to main cast, she has the most appearances out of the idiot trio, and is given a lot of ShipTease with the main character.
* AngelsPose: They do one while explaining to Hayate they're the student body officers in chapter 70.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Izumi, very much so.
* ButtMonkey: To the other two, who usually take advantage of her good nature to mess with her.
%%* BookDumb
* CatGirl: Very briefly while she was possessed
* TheChewToy: The main reason for Izumi's popularity? To quote from the first character poll, "I like the way everyone picks on her." Izumi is ''not'' happy about this.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: [[spoiler:Izumi to Hayate, when they were six - although neither seems to know it was the other.]]
* ClassRepresentative: In practice, she prefers to let Hinagiku deal with the hard stuff.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* FirstKiss: With [[spoiler:Hayate]] though neither remembers the other enough to realize it, though she comes close at one point.
* FreudianTrio: Izumi is [[TheKirk Ego]].
* GenkiGirl: Her expression in the picture is the one she has 95% of the time, even when crying.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: In one chapter she doesn't notice she showed off a PantyShot when kicking a soccer ball. And in another when the other two of the trio were teasing Hayate to lift up Izumi's skirt [[ItMakesSenseInContext (to prove that blushing makes a character more popular)]], she instead offers to lift it up herself; and getting confused by their embarrassed reactions afterwards.
* {{Miko}}: Risa, although she has no supernatural powers.
* ModestyShorts: Izumi wears these in season one of the anime for a quick censorship gag but not in the manga on some occasions.
* NiceGirl: The other two note that, despite her complaints, she still goes along with their antics even when they are at her expense.
* OffhandBackhand: When they first introduced themselves to Hayate, Risa claimed to be "renowned Japanese entertainer Haruo Minami" (who was ''male'' and, by the time of this series, ''dead''), Miki smacked her, and she gave her proper name.
* {{Ojou}}: All three are technically this, coming from wealthy and influential families.
* PlayboyBunny: There's a chapter in the manga where Hayate briefly reads ''Literature/AliceInWonderland'' ... [[AdaptationDecay sort of]] ... to Nagi, and Hinagiku as Alice gets information from these three dressed as Bunnies. She commiserates:
-->'''Alice (Hinagiku):''' It must be rough having to cover the [[FanService cheesecake angle]] for our [[BreakingTheFourthWall anniversary story]].\
'''Bunny Girls:''' Hey, it's a living!!
* SproutingEars:
** Izumi popped up (probably) fox ears when Hayate, trying to conceal an involuntary change in his appearance, told her [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial he had nothing to hide]]. She promptly began trying to pull away the cloak he was wearing.
** Also sprouted ears when she was possessed by a vindictive cat spirit.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Though after awhile, Izumi proved to be much more popular than the other two and got an expanded role as a result. A later chapter lampshades it when girls like Hinagiku or Izumi get birthday chapters, but Risa practically has to beg for a focus chapter. And still doesn't really get one.
* TownGirls: Izumi is Femme, Miki is Neither, and Risa is Butch.
* YaoiFangirl: Izumi, as regards Hayate and her brother.

Nagi is one of the only people who can stand up to her, once again showing their similar personalities. Sakuya is the eldest daughter in her family with three sisters and one brother. Her illegitimate half brother Gilbert is one of the people who is constantly harassing Nagi for her fortune. Sakuya is obsessed with stand-up comedy, especially Manzai style. 681Mikado Sanzen'in is Nagi's grandfather and the head of the Sanzen'in family. He lives in a mansion much bigger than Nagi's mansion with many servants (who are all similar-looking). It is unknown where the Sanzen'in fortune comes from but Nagi suugests he's an oil tycoon. He has the ability to judge a person's character just by looking at them.
Even though Mikado is Nagi's only direct relative, they don't get along. Nagi dreads going to the main house to visit him. As a result, Mikado is not seen often after his first appearance. However, he does seem to be concerned about her, since he tries to stop the assassination/kidnapping attempts by announcing that he will pass the Sanzen'in inheritance to the person who makes Nagi cry and beg for forgiveness. The conditions are later changed, with the help of Maria, who he's fond of, so that Hayate must be defeated instead.

Ayumu Nishizawa is a girl from Hayate's school before he became a butler. She always had feelings for Hayate and is happy when he pays his old school a visit. She violently lashes out at anyone who badmouths her and Hayate, including a teacher who called Hayate a dropout because his parents had refunded all his school fees the day Hayate was sold. She confesses her feelings to Hayate, but Hayate rejects them after getting a vision of Nagi. Undeterred, she tries to talk to Hayate when she sees him a week later, but she runs into Nagi. She is shocked that, in terms of metaphoric strength, Nagi is a dragon while she is a hamster. Nishizawa retreats, vowing next time to bring a stronger hamster. She later challenges Nagi to karaoke, only to lose. In the anime, it is a running gag that she appears in every episode, usually for less than thirty seconds doing something entirely unrelated to the episode's plot, though always related to food. However, she is the only girl who has successfully confessed her love towards Hayate, which often places her in situations where she is alone with him. Most of the time she is shown eating something.

Athena is a daughter of the Tennos family. Her parents are dead, and their absence is something of a sensitive issue for her. She's Hayate's old girlfriend, as well as his first Mistress, whom he met 10 years ago. Since he was very young at that time, he called her "A-tan" for short. Her family owns Hakuō Academy, and she is the board chairman of the school.

An accomplished singer and amatuer mangaka who Hayate helped recover from an injury. Due to a complicated series of events, she initially believed Hayate was a girl. She is also close friends with Chiharu, and Nagi and idolized her before becoming rivals with her in their quest to become great mangakas. Hinagiku seems to be a bit of a fan of hers as well, and even agreed to help her improve her manga. She appears to have some trust issues, which is strangely balanced by the fact that she seems to believe almost any lie. It appears that she might have some feelings for Hayate (surprise, surprise).

In her efforts to become a great mangaka, she has allied with Hayate and Hinagiku to make up her doujin circle. Hayate mostly covers keeping her health up with her tiresome double-life while Hinagiku acts as an advisor, a very brutally honest one at that. Thanks to Hinagiku's research into what makes popular manga and the support of her and Hayate, Ruka has made incredible progress.
----
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Hayate and Hinagiku. All three of them have the same background of their parents abandoning them with massive debts and they are all rather similar individuals. Whereas Hinagiku is like a female mirror of Hayate, Luca is more like a ditzier (and less cynical) direct female counterpart of Hayate. Also she was apparently the StudentCouncilPresident at her old school.
%%* BloodFromTheMouth
* BrutalHonesty: The reason she values Hinagiku so much as an advisor is that she wants to hear objectively what is wrong with her manga rather than sugar-coating it to ease her feelings. That said, Hayate was concerned for her health when Hinagiku did exactly that with three simple yet cutting critiques. It seems to have greatly helped her in the long run.
* {{Determinator}}: Refuses to cancel her performance (which includes a dance) while injured. And considering how overworked she is...
* TheDitz: To an extent. It's not quite clear how intelligent she is but she has unusual thought processes and tends to believe pretty weak lies.
* {{Expy}}: In her short introductory scene, she is shown outside a vending machine, holding a declaration of debt for about a hundred fifty million yen. Apart from this backstory being almost identical to Hayate's (ParentalAbandonment and all) she also looks quite similar to Hayate.
%%* FirstKiss: [[spoiler: With Hayate]].
* ForegoneConclusion: The author has give some hints that the latest anime and movies are all canon and took place after the conclusion of her arc. This pretty much shows us the result of the bet between her and Nagi.
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: [[spoiler:While she reconciled with her parents, she hasn't fully forgiven them for what they did to her. It'll take some time.]]
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler:She had met Kayura when she was starting out as an idol.]]
* GreekChorus: Mostly fulfills this role in ''Can't Take My Eyes Off You!''.
%%* IdolSinger

%%* SequentialArtist
* SoOkayItsAverage: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]]. In order to improve Luca's manga, Hinagiku advises her to try reaching a level where it can simply be read to the end and enjoyed by everyone who picks it up. This alone will not make it a truly special work that sells millions of copies, but give her a solid base from which to improve further. This is contrasted by Kayura who later tells Nagi she has to reach for the stars with every work she creates if she ever wants to create something special.
* SproutingEars: Pops out cat ears and a matching tail after she overhears Hayate admitting that he's a boy.
* StudentCouncilPresident: She dropped out of school, but before she did was the student council president.
* SuperGullible: When Maria learns that Ruka somehow still thinks that Hayate might be a girl even after seeing him in male clothing she thinks she must be an incredible airhead. A very pure, sweet airhead.
* SweetOnPollyOliver: Finds herself somewhat attracted to Hayate and seems to think it's a bit of a shame that 'she's' a girl. Causes some heavy embarrassment for her when she finds out the truth.

She reacts strongly whenever Hayate touches her anywhere, such as tapping her on the shoulder or carrying her away from danger, worrying about whether or not their physical contact will affect her chances of getting a husband later in life. She is basically afraid of men. Saki came in contact with the Tachibana family when Wataru's grandfather, Tachibana Enkyou, saved her and her grandmother, the legendary maid Kijima Rei, while they were traveling around the world searching for her missing parents (turned out her parents were fine; her grandmother had become forgetful in her old age and forgot where they were living).

She singlehandedly fabricated the "Tiger's Pit for Butler's challenge" so she could lure in Hayate and Nagi and take her revenge on the Sanzenin family for "killing" her father. After her defeat, she gave up on her plans for revenge. Currently, she's one of the people actively trying to gain the Sanzenin family inheritance. He's an avid fan of dungeon crawlers, particularly ''{{VideoGame/Dragon Quest}}'' and ''{{VideoGame/Ultima}}'', and he has a huge anime/manga collection. 909** Notably Hinagiku is immune to her driving and was downright relaxed despite the very real risk of high-speed collision because for her anything is fine as long as it's on the ground.
