  • Accidental Downer Ending: In a bizarre mix of this and Torch the Franchise and Run, with the Downer Ending being a result of the game not selling as well as needed to justify Dead Space 4 release. Before 3 released, Electronic Arts stated that there would be no sequel unless the game sold over 5 million units, more than the first two games combined. Needless to say, the game fell far short of that mark. This may explain why the Awakened DLC ends with the Brethren Moons fully awakening and beginning their campaign of genocide on the galaxy, and there is literally nothing Isaac, Carver, or anyone can do to stop them, making further sequels all but impossible. Interestingly, there was a plan on what to do after the DLC, as explained in a Wha Happun? video by Matt McMuscles: it would have remnants of humanity aboard a flotilla and advance from there. Plans for a following 4th instalment were placed in Development Hell after 3 didn't sell as well as Electronic Arts had hoped. Visceral Games was then tagged to develop a brand new Star Wars single-player video game. In October 2017, EA shut down Visceral Games, which left the future of the Dead Space franchise in serious doubt. Those doubts continued until July 2021 when EA announced a remake of the first Dead Space for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S developed by Motive Studios, which would utilize the Frostbite engine.
  • Dummied Out:
    • There are several unused suits that can be found in the gamefiles and can be added into the game proper… provided that you use a cheat program on PC. Among these cut suits are variants of the Arctic Survival Suit (with red eyes), an Isaac-specific version of Carver's "Witness Suit" and a "Special Forces Suit" for Isaac. Notably, these suits could be unlocked in a pre-Alpha version of the game, but were removed from the final product for unknown reasons.
    • The iconic Advanced Suit from the previous game, showcased prominently in several trailers and promotional screenshots, was planned for inclusion but cut (along with several other suits, as said above) for unknown reasons. Like the above, it can be unlocked by editing savefiles, and has different variants based on combat damage.
    • +4 versions of upgrade circuitry were available in the demo but were cut from the final releases, though their assets are still available in the game files.
  • Franchise Killer: Originally, there was a statement made by EA claiming that they would kill the franchise if it didn't sell over 5 million units, which is more than the sales of the previous two games combined. Needless to say, the game failed to reach that goal, which led EA to state that the franchise was "taking a break for now". The ending of the Awakened DLC seemed to confirm that EA had accepted that the series was finished, and the shutdown of Visceral Games in 2017 appeared to be the final nail in the coffin. However, a remake of the first game was released in 2023 to a very positive reception, which means there could still be some hope for the series.
  • Multi-Disc Work: Just like the second game, the Xbox 360 version required two discs, while the PlayStation 3 version, due to its blu-ray format, only required one disc.
  • Out of Order: Chapter 14 gives you some freedom in the order you go about obtaining the Rosetta fragments across the facility, thus it is possible to encounter Twitchers in the Disposal Service side mission before they are "officially" introduced in a cutscene coming out of the Paleontology area.
  • Torch the Franchise and Run: It's very hard not to see the end of Awakened, in which the Brethren Moons awaken and renew their cycle of wiping out all life in the galaxy, arriving at Earth en masse while Isaac and Carver look on hopelessly, as this, especially given the ridiculous expectations that EA had for the game as noted above.
    • As an added wrinkle, in 2023 during a livestream playthough of the remake of the first Dead Space, Chuck Beaver (a producer on the original franchise) stated that while there were definitely some gameplay choices in 3 he didn't agree with, the plot itself ended up in a place they had more or less always intended. The facts that there's a bit of ambiguity on whether what Issac and Carver are actually seeing is real, and that Tau Volantis, while hugely important to the Dead Space story, wasn't ACTUALLY the true Marker homeworld implies the writers did have a plan for the franchise post-Awakened.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The developer has opened up that their original concept for the game was to heavily explore Clarke's own mindscape, the psychoses he has developed as a result of his experiences and contact with the Marker, and uncertainty of knowing what is real. EA shut that down basically saying "Exploring insanity doesn't sell. Action sells."
    • Building on that theme, Visceral's original idea for the co-op was for the partner to be "Shadow Isaac", a figure initially appearing to be a different character but who would eventually be revealed to be a hallucination of Isaac's. At some points in the game, the players would have been shown different versions of things to inspire an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust. This idea was scrapped in favour of Carver.
