Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:

Ask the Tropers:
openCaptain Ersatz Misuse?
I found this example in Characters.Ys VIII Lacrimosa Of Dana under the Tree of Origins.
- Captain Ersatz: Of the Catalyst from Mass Effect 3 - both entities are designed by its creator(s) to judge organic life based on their evolutionary levels, controlling their expansion and growth by systematically wiping them out according to different set conditions. In Mass Effect, species are wiped out when they reach the peak of evolution. The Lacrimosa wipes out species if they start to stagnate in evolution and fail to adapt to differing conditions. Although an individual Reaper made by the Catalyst in Mass Effect is the sum of an entire species, a similar method is used by the Tree when choosing the next Warden of Evolution - an individual who embodies their race's greatest qualities.
Isn't that example entirely missing the point of what a Captain Ersatz is suppose to be? The trope is essentially about the character equivalent of a Bland-Name Product to get around trademarks, while this example sounds like an excuse to compare Ys VIII to Mass Effect 3. Edited by DivineFlame100
openMisblamed
I asked this on the "is this an example" thread and got no response, so I'm trying here.
Can Mis-blamed be used for characters in-universe, or is it specifically for behind the scenes stuff? Because there's a Mis-blamed entry for Puko in YMMV.Aggretsuko.
openDirectToVideo rename?
All links to Direct To Video seem to have been changed to Direct to Video... not sure what's going on...
openStrange page
I was looking at the page for the movie ''Soul'', and came across a different and very weird page. What is it even supposed to be about? Like, I'm not saying it should be cut or anything, but I also don't understand what it's for.
Edited by Loopytires55openSideways Compatibility?
I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind why the Sideways Compatibility trope is called "sideways compatibility". I get that it's an attempt to be more encompassing than "backwards compatibility" in terms of describing interoperability, but 1) the majority of the examples listed are just backwards compatibility, 2) sideways compatibility implies compatibility with concurrent hardware and the number of examples for that are next-to-nil, 3) Backwards Compatibility is just the more well-known term, so why not just call it that? I feel like the odd name is also the reason why it isn't heavily wiked to.
openDC Future State Print Comic
DC Future State already has a YMMV page available, but I must question the validity and necessity for it in the first place. For now, the entries are:
- Author's Saving Throw:
- Fans have, at the very least, responded rather positively to the amount of genuine diversity in the different creative teams after DC's ongoing titles were largely male dominated in the last several years. This includes the likes of Vita Ayala, Marguerite Bennett, Mariko Tamaki, Stephanie Phillips, Marguerite Sauvage, Nicola Scott, and Alitha Martinez among the writers and artists.
- After years of creating some of the most gorgeous artwork of Dick Grayson, Nicola Scott was selected to do the artwork on the Nightwing miniseries.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Yara Flor already has fans excited being a Latina member of the Wonder Woman family and an Amazon contemporary for Jon and Damian with them hoping she'll be a Canon Immigrant when the event is over.
The event hasn't even premiered yet, so we don't even know how are tropes are gonna apply or even if they will apply at all. What should we do?
openRDR2 custom title problem
Currently Red Dead Redemption 2 has an Arabic numeral "2" in its Wiki Word but uses the custom title function to turn it into a Roman numeral. Officially, Rockstar uses both stylizations (the Arabic numeral in running text but Roman numeral in the logo). But this is a confusing misuse of the custom title function; how do we sort this out?
EDIT: Somebody reverted the custom title to the Arabic numeral, resolving the main problem.
Edited by Albert3105openPersistent complaining on YMMV.CrashBandicoot4ItsAboutTime.
Psi001 has been constantly adding entries complaining about characterization in YMMV.Crash Bandicoot 4 Its About Time. Among their entries include a Cliché Storm entry ranting about flanderization of the characters, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character and Badass Decay complaining about Crash being stupid compared to Coco despite it always been part of his character, and an Audience-Alienating Premise entry that reads more like a general rant about the game (while the game itself definitely has flaws, Psi spends more time ranting about Positive Discrimination like his other entries). Also, a Badass Decay entry on YMMV.Crash Bandicoot is a huge Wall of Text complaining about Coco suffering Positive Discrimination which misuses Drama-Preserving Handicap and outright states We Want Our Jerk Back!.
I'd send them a PM, but I've already had several arguments with them about their Single-Issue Wonk on other sites that inevitably go nowhere, so I don't want to talk with them again lest we have another argument.
openRemove as non-canon?
Rupert Gardner from Mass Effect 2 Normandy Crew:
- Put on a Bus:
- No sign of him in Mass Effect 3 unless he died, meaning his name is on the memorial wall.
- The Expanded Galaxy Mod finally gives him some closure: Cerberus captured and processed him.
I intended to delete the latter entry as Expanded Galaxy Mod is a fan mod mixing Dummied Out and fan made content. The Mass Effect wiki, which otherwise denotes cut content, say nothing about this suggesting this fate is fan made as opposed to the quasi-canon at best cut-but-official content. Objections?
openWorks of Banned Tropers
Whether Troper Works or Unpublished Works, should we include work pages of banned tropers? Oracle of Tao and its novel form seems to be not included on Troper Works, and it was made by a bounced troper.
Edited by alnair20aug93openA tropeless creator page
So, while clicking 'round the Random Media button, I found out Creator.Big Park, which is a stub, tropeless page that hasn't been edited since 2013. What should I do with this?
openPlasmaPower
Plasma Power seems to be acting very rudely. He is very arrogant and uses nasty language, as seen here and here. In this post, he calls another user an "elitist douchebag" after an edit war with Swim To The Moon over an example at YMMV.The Simpsons S 7 E 11 Marge Be Not Proud [1], where both sides accuse each other of Complaining About Shows You Don't Watch. This came up only recently, but in August 2019 he made this edit at YMMV.The Simpsons S 4 E 21 Marge In Chains, where he also accused another user of not watching the episode. I'd like to know if there is similar behavior elsewhere.
openinserting special characters in text
I want to write something in Greek as part of an example. I've seen it before on the site (can't remember where) so I know it's possible, but how do I do it?
openByzantine Bickering
Hey there, a long time silent lurker here. I just had this idea about a new trope called "Byzantine Bickering", which is when small talk derails into a philosophical or societal argument, basically the lovechild of a Seinfeldian conversation and a rant-inducing slight. This kind of conversation will inevitably be lampshaded by one of the speakers saying at one point "What were we talking about again ?". The title I propose comes from the fact that the Byzantines were infamous for it (see the page quote for the useful notes on the Byzantine Empire). What are your thoughts ? Do you think it would be a viable concept for a trope page ? Are there pages that already more or less fill the bill ?
openA page full of tropes... without a Description
Dragonheart, likely based on the old Sean Connery movie of the same name (or is it the other way around?).
Page was made in 2016, not updated for months, anyone familiar with this work wanna try fixing it?
openThe thin line between webcomic and web-manga
This is an issue that has been raised several times over many years and involved works that I edited heavily (for example, Daily Lives of High School Boys and Kotoura-san), that is, how to handle manga that started online.
I know we have a consensus that an online preview, by itself, does not change the work's namespace, which is why the two works named above are still in the Manga/ namespace, because from day one they are intended to be published on paper, but released online-first.
What I am confused are works like I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying and I Think Our Son Is Gay. They were originally serialized on Pixiv (and in the latter case, Twitter as well). However, they are collected and published on paper eventually. Should they be Manga-namespaced, or they should—following the precedent of Hetalia: Axis Powers—be put into Webcomic/ ? Or even in Web Original/ like Getsuyoubi No Tawawa?
A third case is even more complicated. Wasteful Days of High School Girls was originally published as webcomic (on Nico Nico Douga), but eventually no longer published that way; most of the series is published in anthologies like traditional manga. How should it be namespaced?
Edited by SamCurtopenQuestionable deletions
LaundryPizza03 has been deleting examples on pages such as FranchiseKiller.Video Games, UnwinnableByMistake.Other Video Games, UnwinnableByMistake.ZX Spectrum Games at apparent random with no reason given beyond a vague, context-free "misuse". I sent them a PM a few days ago telling them that they need to explain why the examples are misuse, but they've completely ignored it and are continuing to delete or change examples (see: VideoGame.Paper Mario Color Splash or The Last Of These Is Not Like The Others) without providing an explanation beyond "misuse".
Other examples aren't much better: he also deleted a large chunk of examples from Eternal English with no explanation beyond "cleanup".
Edited by N8han11openRadar.PokemonAnime Cut Anime
Is there a history/lookup for Pokemon Anime? The edit reason (while this wiki does have issues with P5) is rather overblown and there seems to have been zero consensus on what to cut, especially with a TON of orphaned links. The discussion pages shows nothing about the cut, either.

Where do I go if I want to know why these ghosts of Asian horror films prey upon perfectly innocent people whom they do not know and had NOTHING to do with their deaths?
