Ask the Tropers:
open Question about the cut list
I recently stumbled across Film.La Misma Luna, which has 0 tropes and should go to the cut list. I noticed that the cut information has the number of pages that once linked to it. Do I have to type that in manually or is it automatic?
openWhy are some tropers hesitant to launch pages?
This question is nothing more but curiosity.
I noticed that some drafts on the launch pad are very above the minimum requirements, but don't even have word of a launch date; Many examples enough to qualify, a pretty good draft, more than enough hats, proposed months or even years ago, etc. The requirements in theory seems pretty minimal, so in these cases what exactly is the problem?
I have zero intention to launch any of these myself, of course. Nor do I want to push any one in particular. Is there just some unwritten rule I'm not aware of?
Edited by PikaRoboopenThe newest Video Example
Usually, there's a way to see when a video example was uploaded. But the newest one on the page is displayed seperately, how to see it there?
openIs this a valid example? Live Action TV
I think I might have (unintentionally) edit warred in this instance, so I better proactively put it up for discussion here. I put up an example of What the Hell, Hero? and Troper Master Hero deleted it. I put it back up with the following explanation
Aside from me apologising for adding it back, who would you say is correct of us two?
openKosher website page or nah? Web Original
A recent ATT reminded me that we have a page for Club Penguin Fanon. As with some other fanon wikis that have been around for long enough, it seems to blur the line between "wiki used for hosting tropable creations" (i.e. the likes of the SCP Foundation; kosher provided there isn't a better place to organize things) and "wiki used for rounding up fan ideas" (it is in the name, after all; not kosher per mod posts in the Websites Cleanup.)
Indeed, from what's been put on the tropes page, it seems like some of the content falls under rule #4 of the cleanup (content on the site is probably tropable, but it's likely better to have it filed separately under other namespaces), while others are scattered enough that it circles back around to a non-kosher collection of fan ideas.
I tried posting in the Websites Cleanup long ago to get a second opinion, but failed to obtain a proper verdict, so I'm taking it here to get it worked out.
open no one know this show T.T Film
I can't find this show. the show is about a girl play esport FPS game and in finals she took a pill that make her see the game in slow-motion and she won but the sideaffect made her sleep for 10 years. she woke up to find the life on earth was gone and people had to survive something I didn't finish it cuz I was in gym but I was watching it on syfy.so any idea?
openLa Casa de Papel Character Cleanup Live Action TV
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here we go.
I feel like the headings for Characters.La Casa De Papel are misleading. They suggest that some of the robbers only appeared in Seasons 1 and 2.
Would it make more sense to have them say “Introduced in Season 1” and “Introduced in Season 3”? Something along those lines, tweaking is fine.
Wanted to ask here instead of just making the change.
openNo examples on InternationalPopStarEnglish
International Pop Song English has no examples, but isn't listed on Definition-Only Pages. There's no evidence of an Examplesectionectomy anywhere in the history; it's always been like this. What's up with that?
Edited by naturalironistopen Scrolls of Lore
So, I just discovered the pages for Scrolls Of Lore and...
...I don't know where to begin? I am so confused. The pages are just filled with nonsensical, bizarre edits from many different Tropers. SOL is a fansite, apparently, and about 90% of the edits for the pages are about the users. Are they roleplaying?? Is this all a joke?? It's really hard to tell, because as I said, so many of these edits are just—What?
- Ambiguously Brown: Cantus, the forum's current (unofficial?) head of Administration, is Iranian American.
- Cloud Cuckoo Lander: There are a few.
- Fantastic Racism: They mean it, too.
- Foe Yay Shipping: Members who heavily disagree with each other, notably on the Forsaken/Lordaeron topic, are sometimes shipped together and told by other users to just Get a Room! and get it over with already.
- Insane Troll Logic: The argument stemming from an addition of Forsaken-style lampposts leading to the belief that Blizzard was whitewashing the old Lordaeron style.
- Internet Tough Guy: Plenty of these.
- Noodle Incident: Numerous instances.
- Lamp posts, on how the Lordaeron crest on the lamp posts of Brill relate to the Forsaken's claim to the area
- Soldrethar, a divisive user
- Rolandius, a troll of the more universally-insane persuasion
- Nostalgia Ain't Like It Used to Be: Most users agree the quality of Blizzard Entertainment's work has gone downhill in recent years.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Happens sometimes. They come back.
- They always come back.
- Small Name, Big Ego: A large number of personalities on the site.
- The Smart Guy: ARM 3481, who may or may not be a robot.
- He's a robot.
- Soapbox Sadie: Some of these pop up. They can be militant about RL issues, or problems unique to the world of Azeroth. Or both.
And that's just the main page. The Laconic is just "Abandon all hope ye who enter here." The character page is filled with almost nothing but Zero-Context Examples. Traaaash just randomly changed one character's description to "is a nerd." One description is just "A persian american with a distinct lack of humor." One is just "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!"
What...the heck is happening here. Can someone explain?
open ArtisticLicensePrison page?
Tropers, would an Artistic License – Prison page be a good idea?
Whenever I see something taking place in a prison that simply would not be allowed to occur (for example, two lines of prisoners walking in single file down a hallway, going in opposite directions, and one prisoner from one line and another prisoner from the other line meet in the middle of the hallway and have a conservation while the lines just keep going — would that be a Prison Hallway Conversation?) I usually list it under Artistic License – Law, but I feel the intent of Artistic License – Law is more for law enforcement and courtroom settings.
On the other hand, would Artistic License – Prison simply be too nitpicky? I looked at all of the Prison Tropes and didn't really see one that covers what I'm talking about here. Of course, this idea could be covered under another page that I simply couldn't find.
open Trope for Interquel/Sequel making the original worse?
I just recently finished Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and wanted to know if there's a trope for when a sequel/interquel makes the original make less or no sense (when it comes to story). Idiot plot comes to mind, but I don't feel like it's specific enough. Is there a trope for when an interquel or a sequel breaks the original in terms or story/setting/characters?
openEdit war(?)...in custom WikiWord display?
I have some concerns regarding the page Bug Fables. Right now it displays as Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. What concerns me, however, is that the page name just uses two words: 'Bug Fables', and the custom display just changes the page name to the game's full title. And the thing that worries me even more is that this custom display was already used before some long time ago, and was, for some reason, got reverted back to just 'Bug Fables' at some point of time. And now, several days ago, it's back at 'Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling'. Also, it prompts people to wick the redirect to the work page instead of the work page itself, and it bugs me.
I'd like to ask: is this acceptable to have the full title as custom display when the link itself uses the shortened title? And does this fall under the definition of the "edit war"?
Hope my wording doesn't confuse you.
Edited by I--Vanya--IopenDoomed Hometown: Specific or Flexible?
Say, is Doomed Hometown only specific to The Hero, or can it be flexible to include minor characters (or NPCs in the case of video games) as well? I'm asking this because, in Genshin Impact, I found a particular instance of this that applies to NPCs but not The Hero, but I couldn't find any other equivalent of the trope anywhere. Here's the example I added.
- Doomed Hometown: The destroyed village in Wuwang Hill is revealed to be one for five NPCs (Meng, Little Wu, Mumu, Congzi and Big G) in Hu Tao's Story Quest, having been devastated by an unknown disaster which also took Big G's life, and likely turned the surrounding area haunted with spirits and Liyue's version of the Hitodama Light.
openBig hero 6 and knucklehead and bonehead Film
Hi! I'm new to the TV tropes and I have a question about the movie Big hero 6 so I would like to have an answer about someone who had seen the movie or made Big hero 6 TV tropes. What does this "Verbal Tic: Often calls Hiro "knucklehead" or "bonehead" " on Tadashi's page mean? (English is not my native language). Isn't those insulting/offensive words ("bonehead" and "knucklehead" meaning a "stupid person")? And I have actually seen the movie in English and Tadashi said that: "I hope you learned your lesson, bonehead" when scolding Hiro for Hiro's bot fighting. Was it offensive/insulting? Thank you for an answer.
openExactly What I Aimed At should be renamed Exactly What I Was Aiming At
I just think so because the latter sounds more natural and more likely to encounter in conversation. The first one sounds like how someone new to English would say it.
Edited by crazysamaritanopenHow can I edit my profile
Hello, I just only wanted to ask on how I can edit my profile so I can add a list, and create a sandbox.
openCity People Eat Sushi
What is up with City People Eat Sushi other than city people liking sushi and raw fish? I beg to differ on that. I'm from a rural coastal area, and I like sushi, and have a modest liking for well-prepared raw fish.
So, what really is this trope that only has 19 wicks and a thousand inbound links?
openDated language in an example, period-appropriate to the time portrayed. (Resolved)
I ran across this example while working on a TLP - the examples were mined from another page.
- Series. The X Files: (Fainting in Shock is) Played for laughs in 1947 Roswell in "The Unnatural." Dales, the cop protagonist, sees Exley's true alien form (He's been posing as a Negro baseball player) for the first time. The alien keeps trying to wake him up to explain things, but as soon as the cop does so he passes out again. And again. And again.
I'm aware of recent discussion on Trope Talk to the effect that some tropes maintain dated language in their titles because the specific connotations of that language are part of what the trope is about.
What about here? I don't want to whitewash the time period, or bury the existence of Negro League Baseball, but I don't think this is a direct quote from the episode either.
What's the most appropriate way to phrase this? I've not seen this episode... is the character's (assumed) ethnicity relevant? I'm kind of guessing that it might be... someone treated as "Other" turns out to be much more other than first thought...
EDIT: I think I was getting too much tunnel vision due to alphabetizing
Edited by underCoverSailsman
Someone keeps changing an actual fact to a common fanfic set up and now just claims "word of God" but it's not even close. I even made a review explaining why they were wrong and people flagged it saying I was just ranting. Isn't that what reviews are for?
Edit for clarity: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ComicBook/Daken
The same person keeps changing facts and even claiming the current author made it canon, it isn't. They even added flair to make it sound good. I found zero proof of it. There's one very active author who likes the idea he's ace and a sociopath, etc, but it isn't canon fact.
