Guyver 2: Dark Hero actually isn't that far off from its source material. Sure, it doesn't follow the story, but then again, it doesn't pretend to. Sean is loosely based off of, but clearly intended to be a different character than, Sho Fukamachi. The story takes place in a world with the same setting as Guyver, but in a different location. Instead of doing a crappy knock off of the manga like far too many movies based off of anime or manga do, it takes the setting and tells a different story with it, complete with original characters and in a location different from that of the manga. It also has decent fight scenes, good special effects (for the time it was made, anyway), decent costumes, and treats the viewers to something the manga repeatedly suggests and teases about, but never actually presents: a Guyver Zoanoid (basically, one of the setting's monsters equipped with the hero's armor).
It's not the best movie you'll come across, but it's not bad, and it's a rare case of a sequel being better than the original (although not better than the manga or anime).

I see, I see.
Also, y'all's thoughts. Would this kind of exchange be semi-plausible?
Chisame: <surfing the net, disinterested> "Problem?"
Misa: "The lighting guy for Dekopin Rocket's next show had an accident. His leg's broken, and he's laid up in the hospital."
Chisame: <less than completely sincere> "My sympathies."
Misa: "Sooo, you're really good at tech stuff, right? Could you-"
Chisame: "Not a chance in hell."
Misa: <Beat> "We'll be opening for JAM Project at Mahorafest, so I could introduce you to Megumi Hayashibara~"
Chisame: <suddenly at the door; shamelessly sucking up> "So like I was saying, my DEAR friend, I'd absolutely LOVE to help you out! Why don't you give me a rundown on what's-what on the way, hm?"
Misa: <thinking> ...not a chance in hell, huh?
I didn't know Chisame was a fan of anything or anyone. As a strong-headed indie Net Idol who evidently takes a lot of quiet pride in her work, I'd have expected her to see Megumi Hayashibara and other famous anime/manga voice actors as competition or rivals to surpass, not as idols to hold up on a pedestal.
... Besides, how on Earth does Dekopin Rocket have the connections to secure such a meeting? They're mid-teenagers, right? A girl group like them, no matter how locally famous they may be in Mahora, would be considered rookies in the nationwide professional industry with some potential to be big names in the future at best.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. To be fair, it's been a few years since I've read Chisame's focus chapters early on, but being that she's a Cosplay Otaku Girl (notably, she cosplayed a fan-favorite Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain from Magical Girl Biblion, had an emotional breakdown on stage in front of the crowd, and the crowd went wild because they thought she was play-acting the character to perfection) - I did some extrapolation and headcanon'd that Chisame is a fan of things, in addition to her life as net idol Chiu.
That, and the backstory I gave Chisame back in chapter 1 points in the direction of Chisame being a legitimate anime/manga/videogame nerd.

Also, Dekopin Rocket might just be starting out, but they have good luck incarnate available, it's very likely that Sakurako's luck allowed them to just stumble upon all the famous people that would make their ascent to stardom a lot smoother than it'd otherwise be.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariActually, come to think of it, if HUMMINGBIRD (aka Fire Bomber) came to play at Mahorafest, Misa'd probably cream herself. Figuratively speaking, of course.

Hm. The "as I was saying, [complete 180]" doesn't seem very Chisame to me. She lies to herself all the time, but doesn't rewrite her memory enough to believe that and isn't a brazen enough liar to claim it if she doesn't believe it. I think her reaction would be more "dammit, fine I'll do the thing."
Chisame is the kind who would go "Okay, fine, I'll do it, but not because you convinced me or anything!"
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariYeah, but she'd still be grousing about it. I think that's what felt off about "as I was saying, [complete 180]," the fact that it had her faking enthusiasm instead of the converse, as is her normal idiom.
Points taken. I'll see if I can salvage it later.

Misa could also just be flat-out lying.
Technically true, but not the case. She's not that kind of jerk.
She could also be lying about being able to set up the meeting, with the intent of coming up with some way to set up the meeting afterwards.
I'd say Chisame knows enough about it, but whether or not she's secretly enthusiastic (probably not a good word to use) about the whole thing is another matter.
Except that Chisame has, on at least one occasion, treated cosplay as Serious Business (specifically when some of her classmates, much to her dismay, wanted to join her in her hobby), which to me signified that she was really a nerd of the sort we're discussing.
Add in her total familiarity with shonen, harem, and other tropes that show up in her daily life - not to mention and the frequency with which she points them out - to me it seems that whether or not she's a fan of the works in question, she's certainly very familiar with them.
IMO Chisame and Haruna are both total nerds, but I think Haruna is more the "it's all in good fun, so let's just have fun with it!" kind, while Chisame might edge more toward being one of the "Stop Having Fun" Guys for whom otaku culture is Serious Business.
...is any of this making sense, or am I just full of shit and need to reread it all again?

Sounds about right to me.
And yes, you may need to reread some of the Chisame-centric chapters again.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.@marq: ....I was planning on rereading it all anyway. My bigger concern was whether or the words coming out of my mouth actually made sense when strung together like that.
....all this talk about Chisame, and the resident expert is nowhere to be found. OM! How about your two cents?
I mean, the Chisame seen in Classroom Crusaders is already somewhat different than the canon version (has known about the paranormal her entire life, and is just really surly about it; was burned by her parents over the same and turned to animanga/games/net culture/etc. as an escape from having to deal with people in the day-to-day), but still.

I still wonder how Chisame got into that stuff in the first place. Lotta fan-fic writers tend to go for the freakishly angsty route, which I kinda get.
She (probably) grew up in the general vicinity of Mahora without a Weirdness Censor. That's traumatic enough to explain it without extra backstory.
More seriously, I don't think it was anything special. Just a natural loner finding a way she could get loads of positive attention without having to open up to people or dare the daystar.
There's also the Mahorafest cosplay contest, where she overhauled Makie and Ayaka's cosplay from some generic fanservice outfits to Mahou Shoujo Biblion, apparently out of sheer frustration with said generic outfits.
That's the impression I got. Actually hanging around people sort of made that whole thing lose its luster, and the epilogue never happened.
Hrm. I think rik has got this one more or less dialed in.
And yeah, the Mahorafest Cosplay Contest was the event I was primarily referring to.
Even if there's no other show that she legitimately cares about, I don't think you want to get between Chisame and her Magical Girl Biblion.
Chisame is way too Genre Savvy to be anything but a total and complete nerd. Furthermore, while you can get into cosplaying without knowing shit about what you're cosplaying as, Chisame definitely knows who she cosplays as.
@rikalous
Daring the Daystar is very risky. All the ones I know are badass as shit. I mean, there's that guy from Shin Megami Tensei who will really wreck your shit if you piss him off, then there's the one that's just as likely to kill you as she is to rape you over at Monster Girl Quest, and I also know the Daystars of Median XL, which set you on fire from very far away with an instant attack that's very hard to avoid.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimari
So, I just saw Guyver: Dark Hero (1994). Honestly, probably the most notable thing about the movie is that David Hayter (pre-Solid Snake) plays the main character.
Is it a good movie speaking generally? Eh, probably not, but I certainly had fun watching it. Is it a good USA-produced live action movie based on a manga/anime franchise? ...Although I'm not familiar with the original source material, it's probably a safe bet that this film is a lot better than Dragonball Evolution was (disregarding how much of an achievement that may or may not be).
If nothing else, however, this film definitely gets me interested in checking out its source material.
Also, the setting was, for me personally, a huge Hilarious in Hindsight given that much of the action takes place at an archaeological site in Utah. ...which in itself was the premise of an aborted Negima fic I proposed many many years ago, where that would've been Negi's task instead of "teacher at a Japanese all-girls school"!
