During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The recent addition to Dude, Not Funny! in YMMV.Spongebob Squarepants: " In later seasons, many of Mr. Krabs' callous and heartless acts would be indicative of a Complete Monster if not for the show's humorous nature and use of Comedic Sociopathy automatically disqualifying him from the trope." It is okay?

While the usage of CM there is correct in a way, the example a) has no context and b) it's not an example of Dude, Not Funny!.
Machete it away.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanFor Crossed, I just got rid of the Zero Context Example. Now just need write-ups (or cutting) of the Sonic examples and work on Dredd.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsIf there's no objections, then in 24 hours, I'll cut Alpha Protocol's Conrad Marburg.
Giving until tomorrow for the edits, otherwise I'll cut the Sonic examples and edit Dredd myself.

Could you explain why? His description paints him as a pretty nasty piece of work.
We discussed Marburg on the previous pages.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlright: Usagi examples:
- General Fujii was the head of a gang that took over a village. They reduced the workers to slaves, and ordered them to farm and cultivate for long hours. They would continue to do this until the Tax collector came, where they would just kill all the villagers and go to another town. When Usagi happens infiltrates them, he's discovered and tortured, with Fujii taking his swords. When the peasants revolt, the slaughter their way through them, and Fujii abandons most of his men to die or face the police. He and his loyal Dragon take over another gang and launch raids on a village, where he almost murders the elderly headsman for refusing them. when the heroes attack the gang to take him down, he abandons his dragon to run.
Probably needs a rewrite, any comments?
Magua of Last Of The Mohicans counts in neither the film nor the book. Magua had his life destroyed by alcohol, and was run out of his own tribe becaue of his drinking problem. He's the seen the British and the French use the Iriquois and Huron as pawns in their war and is furious about that, and wants both sides gone. He's also got it in for Munroe for a variety of reasons, most notably Munroe having Magua whipped, flogged, and publicly humiliated for his drinking—a problem that Magua wouldn't have if the British and French hadn't introduced the natives to alcohol in the first place.
The film in particular tries its best to make you hate Magua, but in the end it's hard not to sympathise with his position, even if only a little bit.
Seems good (happens infiltrates though?).
EDIT: After I do DC/Vertigo next weekend, I'll go through all the comics and see which ones seem WallOfTexty or otherwise needing a better writeup.

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM Drafts- Complete Monster: Eleanor Iselin! This woman is a fascist who emotionally (and it's implied, sexually) abuses her own son, destroys his relationships and has him brainwashed to kill all of her husband's political opponents. She also has the only woman he loved killed to prevent him from forming any relationships that would break her power over him.
- Eleanor was sexually abused by her own father so he counts as well.
Hmm... she seems to have a legit Freudian Excuse.
Also, has there been a consensus for the Emperor Carter from the Family Guy Star Wars parody?
A question on the Manchurian Candidate example- is this applying for book or film?- I never read the book in its entirety, but I think that description is more true of the novel than the film. In either case, she definitely loves her son I would think, albeit in a very twisted way.
Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiIf regular Carter doesn't count, don't think Emperor Carter can.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsIf somebody could provide a better write-up for Zaroff? I've gone and cut all the lit examples I mentioned that were either zero context, or fail baseline heinousness.
EDIT: Speaking of literature, should we lock the subpage for Redwall? I've already had to cut Cheesethief and Malkariss for a second time after they were voted off the list.
EDIT: I knew this was going to happen. Someone added this to the YMMV for DBZ Abridged.
- Complete Monster:
- Freeza. The fact he's polite and composed doesn't change it. If anything, it makes him even more disturbing. Just listen to "My favorite things."
- Peaceful young races with fires on their houses / millions of voices all silenced like mouses / watching the cowards bow to their new king / these are a few of my favorite things.
- Medamatcha from Lord Slug Abridged, "I'm going to kill Christmas!, and then my Mini Matchas are going to rape it!".
- Freeza. The fact he's polite and composed doesn't change it. If anything, it makes him even more disturbing. Just listen to "My favorite things."
Medamatcha does not count. Even if you could what he said seriously (in fairness, he thinks Christmas is a person/animal, not a holiday), he's outweighed in heinousness by Lord Slug, as well as Frieza, Vegeta, Cooler, and the other villains of the series.
As for Freiza...he was discussed before, though I don't recall exactly how the vote turned out. At the time I maintained, and still do, that an Abridged series can have a monster if that monster is played straight, or is even Laughably Evil, instead of Played for Laughs. That's definitely the case with Frieza (and his brother, Cooler, in the abridged version of Revenge of Cooler) who is played a deadly serious threat that just happens to possess a sense of humour. That being said though, there's a much better reason to cut him—Frieza has two Pet the Dog moments. During the first part of his battle with Goku who admits to missing Zarbon. Also, while fighting Vegeta, he thinks about how he should break the news of the Ginyu Forces' deaths to their families, and whether some sort of gift would make it easier on them. He also seems to genuinely like Ginyu. With that in mind, cut for not being totally evil.

Fixed the grammar and moved Fujii to the page.
For The Walking Dead, Nagan and maybe Thomas need more context; same deadline for Dredd and Sonic (when I wake up tomorrow).
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsWorking on DC/Vertigo now; does Cheshire count for Secret Six or Teen Titans?
Or Pauly Bruckner for The Unwritten?

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsHere's a draft write-up for Zaroff- apologies for length:
- General Zaroff from The Most Dangerous Game is a Social Darwinist serial killer hiding behind a veneer of civilization. Bored with being a Great White Hunter, he has taken up residence on a hidden island, in which he maroons sailors so that he can hunt them for his amusement. While Zaroff prides himself on being a sportsman and gentleman and prefers a challenge, he has no qualms about "hunting" the weak. Nor does he really play fair in the slightest. Anyone he captures who isn't interested in "playing" is turned over to his servant, a former knouter for the Tsar until they are willing, and while he initially starts on a fairly even footing with his prey, he ultimately uses a pack of vicious hounds against more illusive prey. Cementing the Morton's Fork nature of the game for his victims, Zaroff is noncommital as to whether he would actually let anyone go who survived unless they were willing to keep quiet about his crimes.

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiI'm just going to say it now: if you consider a parody of a song from The Sound of Music to be a compelling reason why a character fits this trope, you really don't get what it's supposed to be.
The Frieza thing.
Found this on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)
- Captain Ryan, of Leo's favorite show, Space Heroes, is either this or Heroic Comedic Sociopath. He constantly slaps his men, killed a hoard of innocent, if annoying, small furry animals by blowing them out an airlock into space, and killed a villainess through disintegration, but he kept her still smoking boots "to remember her by." He's also completely apathetic towards the deaths of his crew members.
- The slapping is justified since it's his way of helping them calm down and he did slap himself on one occassion.

I think he counts, he deserves a position of honor among such other candidates like Claude Frollo and Johan Liebert.
He's like a poorly animated Captain Kirk Expy, only so much worse!
He's a sick man, when finding a bunch of cute furry creatures, he throws them out the airlock, with no regard for his crew because they annoy him.
When he finds a hot alien he falls in love with, she reveals herself as an enemy and kills her with no remorse
He and two redshirts go down to a planet and they both die he didn't care enough to even remember one of their names!
When one of his officers is mind controlled, he opts to shoot him.
Finally, he's a dick when anyone, an I mean ANYONE gets out of line, does he reason, no he just SLAPS THEM IN THE FACE! He even does it himself.
This guy deserves his marking.
Also, occassion is not how one spells it.
Quick question, did I need the Sarcasm Mode Pot Hole?
I was going to bring him up when the show's season ended, along with the rest of the examples, which are bad, but not as bad, but I was just compelled to bring this guy here. For the previous sentence, I deemed Sincerity Mode Pot Hole unnecessary.

I'd say cut Cheshire btw. She loves her daughter except when Gail Simone is writing.
Can't really argue with that...
