Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I took a look at the Vargo discussion and I agree [tdown] to that guy.

What about the other half of the Villain Protagonist duo?

Also I was wondering out of curiosity when Cesare Borgia was discussed in this thread?

And anymore votes on Birch?

So Todd can't get aroused unless he's thinking about raping or killing or humiliation.

......Kay. Think we need a certain someone to comment on that.

Alright with 7 [tup] and 0 [tdown] I shall write Reginald Birch's write up and send it to the draft page here it is.

Assassin's Creed : Forsaken: Reginal Birch serves as the Big Bad the novel and the Greater-Scope Villain of the Kenway Family Saga. Initially a friend to Edward Kenway when the latter's daughter Jennifer Scott, exposes Birch as not only a templar of the the British Rite but also their Grand Master to her father, he sends mercenaries to the Kenway manor to murder Edward Kenway, and kidnap Jennifer to be sold as a Sex Slave to Turkish slavers, all while framing a innocent servant for the crime. He then takes in Edward's son Haytham only so he could manipulate him into becoming a Professional Killer as well as a Knight Templar fanatic. From there he has sent Haytham kill many people, including the opposing Assassins and even fellow Templars when they got in the way of his plans. He also has Haytham uncover technology from the First Civilization knowing full well the kind of destruction that they bring all so he could use them Take Over the World, even sending Edward Braddock to help Haytham despite knowing Bradock's sheer brutality would cause plentiful of deaths. When Haytham finds where Jennifer is being captive as well as Birch being the true culprit behind the death of his father, Birch tries to have Haytham killed along with Jennifer. While Birch tries to pass himself as a Well-Intentioned Extremist in his last moments, Haytham sees right through him as nothing more than a self deluded madman only using the Templar ideology as an excuse to claim more power for himself.

Lightysnake: Yeah, I don't remember the Darch's relationship with Derek being talked about on this thread, might have to rewatch season three myself to be sure. I do remember a Word of God statement by her actress say she genuinely loved Derek, but y'know, that's irrelevant.

I would like to propose a rewrite for one of my earliest write ups: Rotchefort from The Musketeers. As it was only my second write up, honestly looking back it looks a bit sloppy. So I would like to propose this tweaked version:

Comte de Rochefort, the Big Bad of season 2, is a former agent of Cardinal Richelieu, who, realising how unhinged he was, abandoned him to the Spanish. Introduced being sentenced for murder; Rochefort kills the judge and escapes. Initially appearing to have been turned and now working for the Spanish, Rochefort quickly proves to be working for no one but himself. Building himself into the king’s favour through fake charm and cunning, Rochefort uses everyone as pawns to pave his way. Taking over as the king’s advisor, Rochefort spends the season creating/manipulating situations that make the increasingly paranoid king progressively more dependent upon him, while also destroying his faith in the Musketeers; secretly he plans to murder the king and steal the throne. Rotchefort murders numerous people for his self-serving cause or sometimes simply for fun (six in his first episode alone). His bloodlust is only matched by his lust for the Queen, which started when she was 13. Following his attempt to rape her; he reveals her secret affair with Aramis, to have Aramis, the Queen and her baby executed. To incriminate her, Rocherfort poisons the king, just enough that it leaves him in agony, and frames then murders the innocent doctor Lemay to complete the ruse. Rotchefort tries to force the King to sign the Queen’s death warrant, before finally trying to personally strangle her. A deranged sociopath driven purely by ambition and ego, even Milady de Winter considers him “a mad man”, and the Musketeer’s know him as their most vile enemy.

In other news, seems like today is my birthday.

I am now the same age as the TV show well-known for its protagonist shouting "Damn it!" all the time.

For El Goonish Shive (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/ElGoonishShive) I wanted to add the Aberrations as a blanket entry, they are described in-story as complete monsters, they basically are human beings who used that universe's magic to extend their lifespans, in exchange for killing dozens if not hundreds of innocent humans. One form eats other humans to extend its life, while the other becomes a demonic parasite that attached to a living human and turns them into a brain-dead husk. They are described in the comic as having absolutely no remorse, they usually love killing and willingly chose to kill others just so they won't die. I think that fits the standard MO for a CM.

There have been three featured in the comic thus far, the first one is the man-eater variety, which tried to kill two of the main cast while they were preteens in France, the second is the parasite variety, he's attached to an old man on the literal brink of death and forcing his brain-dead body to keep working while he embezzles millions of dollars that his next body can use, and the last was a spider-like man-eater that wanted to kill a girl who has an innate magical power that could one day kill him, but couldn't tell which between two girls it was, so he just decided he would eat them both. But there has been mention that there have been dozens otherwise and they are described under the blanket term as being horrible monsters.

I have a minor question regarding Vargo Hoat before laying him to rest. I was wondering this morning: was his actions more or less Played for Laughs? His appearance is very cartoonish with long and scrawny legs and arms and a goatee that reaches his hips. Not to mention the lisp that makes him sound quite funny. He was also very incompetent and dumb and considered himself a "Lord" even though he was not even close to being a lord. When attempting to rape Brienne, she bites his ear off, which infects later on and makes him feel not quite well. Finally, his "brilliant" plan to keep Harrenhal in Lord Bolton's possession greatly backfires against him when the Mountain and his men seize the castle, his men abandon him and Hoat himself suffers the most over-the-top death in the whole series: the Mountain chops off his arms and legs and feeds them to him and deliberately keeps him alive for considering his lisp too funny.

Again, I've read the books and Hoat is as familiar to me as it can get, but considering the overall morality of the series, I couldn't take him as a comic relief character.

[down][down] But then again, ASOIAF is not GOT. Vargo himself doesn't even appear in the television series.
