Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

Problematic use of trope from Chuck:
- Five-Man Band: Team Bartowski, eventually.
- The Hero: Chuck (Also The Smart Guy)
- The Lancer: Sarah
- The Big Guy: Casey
- The Medic: Devon (Captain Awesome), Ellie
- The Chick: Morgan
- Sixth Ranger: Bryce Larkin*, Frost
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Daniel Shaw
- 11th-Hour Ranger: Jeff and Lester
- Mission Control: General Beckman, Director Graham
I didn't remove this one, as the character page for this work mentioned Morgan as the chick. Therefore, it needs to be edited when we remove this misuse.
Removed this problematic use of trope from Disney's Peter Pan:
- Five-Man Band:
- Peter - The Leader (Acts like a leader, is very charismatic, etc.)
- Tinkerbell - The Lancer (She tends to disagree with Peter, especially regarding Wendy.)
- John - The Smart Guy (Obviously the smartest; he wears GLASSES for crying out loud!)
- The Lost Boys - The Big Guy (They're not really too smart, but they definitely act as the muscle of the group.)
- Wendy - The Chick or Team Mom (A peacekeeper and surrogate mother of the group who usually needs to be rescued.)
- Michael - Tagalong Kid (Youngest sibling who serves as comic relief and "the cute one".)
The lost boys are more than one person, so it doesn't count.

Re: the Chuck example: I'm axing it right now. It violates "characters can only cover one role", "there can be no more than six characters", "team members cannot occupy any roles outside of the five specified ones", and "Sixth Ranger is not a character type; it's plot-based". That said, characters can occupy individual roles (e.g. The Smart Guy, The Leader, etc.) without the whole team being a Five-Man Band, so the character page entry on Morgan can stay, provided that she(?) actually does fit that role.
And yes, that Peter Pan example was correctly deleted.
No, he doesn't, as Morgan's male.

Ah, okay. I went and deleted the line on the character page.
I just scrubbed the Professional Wrestling page. Big time. According to the new strict rules only 4 of the entries on the page were still acceptable. However, those 4 should be entirely non-controversial.
Russell... likes to hurt people... for PEACE.I sent a message to Fast Eddie, suggesting we allow bands with two females and outlining the reasons why. His reply was "Seems sensible." I guess we can keep the Two Girls to a Team examples, provided that one of the girls is The Chick.
I'd like to add or have added The Adventures of Sinbad to Live Action TV / Five Man Band.
FYI. Sinbad, Firouz and Maeve/Bryn play the Leader, Smart Guy and Chick roles completely straight. Doubar has some Big Guy traits and Rongar has some Lancer traits, but Doubar's officially the second-in-command of the group.
The Leader | Sinbad |
The Lancer | Doubar |
The Smart Guy | Firouz |
The Big Guy | Rongar |
The Chick | Maeve in Season 1, Bryn in Season 2 |
Please explain a bit further; how does each person fit each role?
And another example added without discussion:
Kingdom Hearts II: The heroes form one at the end of the second game
The Leader | Sora |
The Lancer | Riku |
The Big Guy | Goofy |
The Smart Guy | Donald Duck |
The Chick | Kairi |
The Sixth Ranger | King Mickey |
I guess those would work for their roles (Goofy is a shield carrying knight, Donald the magic expert, Riku is a contrast for Sora) but as a five man band they don't count. For the bulk of the game it was just the trio: Soara, Donald, and Goofy. At the end they briefly unite but then the focus shifts to Sora/Riku/Kairi and for the boss battle simply Sora and Riku. They don't function as a five person unit
And yet another example added without discussion, from Live Action TV:
Big Brother UK 6 (2005)
The Leader | Makosi |
The Lancer | Kemal |
The Big Guy | Science "The Great" |
The Smart Guy | Derek |
The Chick | Vanetha "The Cookie Monsta" |
Has there been any consideration given to either locking the pages or adding a commented-out note on them about going through this thread first?

Kingdom Hearts works in trios, duos, or bigger organisations, but not in groups of five. I highly doubt there are any examples.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThere's a commented out note at the top of every subpage telling them that all examples have to come here first. There's been two people who added an example, belatedly saw the note, and removed the example (and then never came here), but everyone else seems to be ignoring it. I'm thinking maybe I need to go through and make them take up the whole editing window, rather than just the first half. And get rid of the "please".

A set of examples added without discussion:
The Men (In the first two seasons)
The Leader | Rick |
The Lancer | Shane |
The Big Guy | Daryl, T-Dog |
The Smart Guy | Glenn |
The Heart | Dale |
Tagalong Kid | Carl |
The Medic | Hershel |
The Men (In season 3)
The Leader | Rick |
The Lancer | Daryl |
The Big Guy | T-Dog |
The Smart Guy | Glenn |
The Heart | Hershel |
Tagalong Kid | Carl |
The Women (In season 3, since the dynamic is more evident)
The Leader | Lori (Rick's wife and the most important female character) |
The Lancer | Andrea (The second most important female character and occasionally clashed with Lori) |
The Big Guy | Maggie (The most aggressive combatant) |
The Smart Guy | Carol (The most strategic combatant) |
The Chick | Beth |
Sixth Ranger | Michonne |
They're definitely not Five-Man Band (as the gender numbers are wrong), but I'm skeptical that they're even Pair of Foils and a Mediator.
And another example added without discussing it here:
Sugar & Spice
The Leader | Diane |
The Lancer | Kansas |
The Smart Guy | Lucy |
The Big Guy | Cleo |
The Chick | Hannah |
Sixth Ranger | Fern |

Another example added without example:
In Book 3:
The Hero | Percy |
The Lancer | Jason |
The Big Guy | Frank |
The Smart Guy | Annabeth and Leo |
The Chick | Piper |
Sixth Ranger | Hazel |
The Mentor | Coach Hedge |
The actual members who fight of The Walking Dead entry fits all the archetypes. So I guess it's OK if it's re-added.
How do you get eight people into a Five Man Band? Other than rampant shoehorning, that is.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"What said. Also, it is helpful if you explain why and how they fit, rather than just saying that you think they do.
Another example added without discussion:
Toa Mata/Nuva
The Leader | Tahu (Toa of Fire) |
The Lancer | Kopaka (Toa of Ice) |
The Big Guy | Onua (Toa of Earth) |
The Smart Guy | Lewa (Toa of Air) |
The Chick | Gali (Toa of Water) |
The Sneaky Guy | Pohatu (Toa of Stone) |
The Sixth Ranger | Takanuva (Toa of Light, starts as a simple matoran named "Takua the Chronicler", then turns into The Hero and fights a powerful form of Teridax in his own lair) |
The Sneaky Guy? Seriously?
Other than The Sneaky Guy thing, and the fact that it has six heroes instead of five, the Bionicle example fits the trope almost to a T. Also, both Pohatu and Onua share The Big Guy role, but do so in different ways, iirc.
Time to leave them all behindIs Gali female?
Yes. All Toa of Water are female.
Time to leave them all behindCould you write up the example in the format from this post? As we hammer out what goes where, we're trying to get the examples into that format.
If they're all female, they don't count. FMB must have one or two women, no more, no less, and one of them must be The Chick. Also, they must be a team, and the team must have exactly five or six members. And no doubling-up on roles.
eta: we really need a FAQ, like the one for Complete Monster.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.
Unless "Billy" is a Gender-Blender Name, I think it's safe to say that wouldn't qualify as a Five-Man Band (though it could be a Team Of Five).
