fragile speedster.
when it comes to combinations...
hero: quick supporter
lancer: slow, heavy hitter.
in a real time battlesystem, the hero's job would be to stop the enemy from dodging or make it less capable of getting up after the lancer gets a hit in. in a turn based system though, it just comes down to the hero having several non magic status effects.
Mighty Glacier, Jack of All Stats, or Glass Cannon.
And Offensive Hero + Offensive Lancer combo for me.

"All worlds begin in darkness and all so end. The heart is no different."-AnsemHero: Mighty Glacier
Combo: Def Hero, Off Lancer
Hmm. Can I say, anything that has a higher probability of my avatar getting out alive as opposed to the alternative? And any game that screws with that just to make a point really annoys me. Like the ending of OFP: Resistance.
I like the Dragon Quest standard of an evolving hero at first the character is a Jack of All Trades (Not stats) learning heals and attack magic with Heroes Prefer Swords and access to attack all boomerang.
Later in the game though when you get more party members that usually falls off into an attacker with decent stats or opens up into a Job System.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Depend on game but mostlly
Defensive hero/ Offensive hero
yeah i like to order people around :P
Lightning Bruiser certainly is my favorite archtype, but a game can still balance one via a lack of ranged attacks, reliance on buffs or poor burst damage potential.
If I can't go that, I'd go closer to Fragile Speedster. They can still dish out respectable damage, and if they never get hit their weak defense isn't much of a problem.
Lancers should be a substitute for what the hero can do, so a Offense/Offense pair is the way to go. Usually they have their own tricks though, but for someone that's supposed to inspire the team to victory you never see heroes with Status Buff spells outside of games where you can customize them from the ground up.
I think Mighty Glacier is my type, especially if he happens to have some extra ranged attacks in hand. I like to play as Jacks though, especially in teamwork games(TF 2 and Pyro for example), so I can fit in the missing places.
grahIt's a toss up between Mighty Glacier and Glass Cannon for me. I love the risk factor with Glass Cannon characters, so long as they're not also pathetically slow, but if they have to be slow and powerful, I'll go with a Mighty Glacier.
Edit: Realized Jack of All Stats didn't count in this, lol.

Holy Grail, huh? Cool story, bro.I prefer Glass Cannon heroes. And Offensive Hero/Defensive Lancer.
Glass Cannon. Because if you can take half a health bar off in one hit, why bother with armor?
I've got to go with Mighty Glacier or Glass Cannon on this one, based on the way I play FF 5.
As for the combination, I prefer Offensive Hero/Offensive Lancer.
"Only now, after being besieged by a flock of talking ponies, did he really understand what he'd lost. "I like magic and mages. ^^ Though fast characters are fun too.
The Protomen enhanced my life.I prefer fragile speedsters myself
As for heroes, I'm sure it's Offensive Hero, Defensive Lancer.
Offensive meat shields that can heal. Maybe turn into god dragons.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahExcept Lightning Bruiser isn't always the best at everything. My main Day Of Reckoning CAW has high speed, strength and durability but he has little charisma so he build's special slowly, his counter window is very small and I only used enough points to get the moves I wanted so he's not the best at executing those moves.
I usually gravitate toward stone walls or whoever will not be taking a lot of damage when I first start the game them look for who is most versatile. I also like hard hitters even if they are slow. The CAW's strength and durability were nearly maxed before I realized speed was lacking.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackI tend to prefer fast heroes, but I'm okay with the Jack of all Trades.
Offensive Hero, Offensive Lancer for me.
Shutdown sequence initiated.Jack of All Trades works better for me.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelSame here.
Seeing all these piss ant tropers trying to talk tough makes me laugh. If Matrix were here, he'd laugh too.It really depends on the game, but most times I'll opt for whatever gives me the most power without sacrificing too much speed. Having both is nice of course, but I aim for power more than speed (or defense, come to think of it. Better to kill the enemy before they can hit me).
I've always favored the Fragile Speedster.
It's actually one of the reasons (ONE) why I usually prefer female characters in fighting and action-adventure games. I've always enjoyed being able to dodge attacks, because I usually find that my attack's won't necessarily be weak in response.

Mighty Glacier. Allows me to make some mistakes while still being able to dish out damage. Speed doesn't mean any thing if the enemy has to eventually close in to do real damage.
I especially Dedede in Brawl for this reason. A heavyweight with some of the strongest attacks, while also having one of the best projectiles in the game that can block projectiles? That's right up my alley.
I'm pretty sure the concept of Law having limits was a translation error. -Wanderlustwarrior
As You Know, Lightning Bruiser is the best build for any character in RPGs, while the Jack of All Stats are not the best in everything. So I'm conducting a survey about what Hero build is the most preferred among the tropers here.
In addition, I'm having a survey on which of these Hero/Lancer combinations is the most preferred among tropers.
That's all.
