Trivia / React

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: All of YouTubers React's guests are well-known on YouTube, up to and including PewDiePie.
  • Billing Displacement: Marlhy is credited as a reactor in "Kids React to Harlem Shake" despite her appearance only being in the production staff's own Harlem Shake video that was included in the videos that the kids were reacting on the episode. Everhet, an actual reactor in the episode, was not credited.
  • Breakthrough Hit: Kids React was this for The Fine Brothers.
  • The Cast Showoff:
  • Colbert Bump:
    • Generally, if the Fine Brothers make a video about something relatively obscure, it will enjoy at least a brief bit of extra coverage, not including kids, teens or elders (or, in some rarer cases YouTubers, who tend to be more aware of that sort of stuff) who decide they like something. Specific examples are below.
    • Jacksfilms was featured on Teens React in December 2012, and in the week after being featured he gained almost 100,000 subscribers.
  • Creator Killer: The announcement of the React World network nearly became this to The Fine Brothers. Before they announced their plans for said network along with a plan to trademark and license "React" series, their channel had 14 million subscribers and was acquiring on average about 9,000 more a day. After the video was posted, the backlash that ensued resulted in them losing subscribers at a rate of about 4,000 per hour and counting. For some time in the videos since the announcement, there was nothing but comments expressing outrage even after they tried to clear it up, while others sarcastically accused them of trademarking mundane things. Eventually the influx of users only visiting their channel to leave displeased or sarcastic comments tapered off as the controversy blew over and the core viewers stayed on. Though the Fine Brothers are now considered YouTube pariahs after accusations of systemic and casual racism in the company known today as React Media, and the resurfacing of a 2009 video in which one of them appeared in blackface, which in turn led them to sell the company in 2021, the main REACT channel now has over 20 million subscribers, proving one and for all that React World is now but a distant memory.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • There was an attempt at a British version of Kids React by a group not related to the Fine Brothers.
    • There was also a "Seniors React to LMFAO" (specifically the "Sexy and I Know It" video), inspired by Kids React while inadvertently predicting Elders React.
    • Some personalities have made "X Reacts to Kids/Teens/Elders React to X" videos in response to being featured on the show. This includes Smosh, KSI, and PewDiePie.
  • Hey, It's That Sound!:
    • The "Cute" bit from "Aw... Cute!" comes courtesy of Emma R.
    • The Fine Brothers themselves did the voice over for the "Truth", "Playa'!", and "Burn!" interlays.
  • In Memoriam:
    • "Elders React to Fifty Shades of Grey". RIP, Pamela.
    • "Elders React to Men Giving Birth". RIP, Richard.
    • "Elders React to Magic Mike XXL". RIP Lois.
    • "Elders React to eSports". RIP Barbara.
    • The 100th special episode of Elders React honored the four mentioned above.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Bordering on the literal interpretation of this trope, the Teens React episode released on December 17, 2012 features Jacksfilms by Jack Douglass, who already has a role (Intern 2) on the other major Fine Brothers' production, MyMusic.
    • Then crosses that border in YouTubers React episode 3, with Grace Helbig (Idol) actually in the studio! Then comes Jack himself in episode 5!
    • Strangely inverted with "Teens React to Tyler Oakley", who's appeared on YouTubers React enough times to be considered a regular. There's also "Kids React to Miranda Sings", created by Colleen Ballinger, who'd been absent from YouTubers React right until the following week.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: In response to some React episodes to YouTubers, the YouTubers featured will occasionally do videos of them reacting to the React video.
  • Milestone Celebration:
    • "Teen React to Amanda Todd" is the entire series' 100th episode.
    • "Kids React to Pharrell Williams' Happy" is that series' 100th episode. A special video was also released showing The Fine Brothers giving their thanks and a montage showing the growth of the original reactors who are still with the series at that point.note
    • "Teens React to the shooting of Cecil the Lion" is that series' 100th episode.
    • "Elders React to Fifty Shades Darker" is that series' 100th episode. A special episode was also released titled "Elders React to 100 Episodes of Elders React". It's Exactly What It Says on the Tin with the present elders reacting to the staff and fellow reactors congratulating them, plus the surviving one who were absent in the episode giving their thanks. It ends with an In Memoriam to the cast members who passed away.
  • Missing Episode:
    • "Teens React to Miley Cyrus We Can't Stop" was taken down by her record label because "they didn't like what the teens were saying" as revealed in Fine Time episode 6. Considering that there have been a lot of React episodes on music videos, especially more recently, this was bound to happen eventually. Several mirror uploads of the original video existed on YouTube for a while and the bonus reactions video is still on the second channel, but the label has also taken those uploads down with the exception of just one low-quality version.
    • The same thing happened with "YouTubers React to Best Song Ever" as of December 2013. Unfortunately, there are only two internationally-available mirror uploads for that video, both of which are low-quality with one of them containing French subtitles.
    • The one hundredth episode special of Kids React has revealed via annotations that two episodes of Kids React are currently offline as of April 6, 2014. As with the others however, there are fan mirror uploads.
    • "Kids React to Frozen- Let It Go (Multi-Language)" was (temporarily) taken down via the Content ID system. There's a near-original quality fan upload of this one, but the group who uploaded this mirror video made a couple bad edits.note
    • "Teens React to Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop", "YouTubers React to One Direction - Best Song Ever" and "Kids React to Frozen - Let It Go (Multi-Language)" have been restored as of May 2014.
      • As of late January 2015, SME has blocked "Teens React to Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop", yet again. However, as of June 2015, it's back once more.
    • "Kids React to Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass" was briefly taken down on copyright grounds in November 2014 but was restored days later, only to be taken down again in December 2014. On the day it was taken down a second time, "Teens React to Wrecking Ball (Chatroulette Version)" was also pulled, both on copyright complaints from the artists' labels.
    • "Teens React to Nicki Minaj - Anaconda" vanished briefly in January 2015 after her record label illegally blocked it on copyright grounds because they didn't like what was said, but it was brought back only a few days later.
    • Unsurprisingly, a huge amount of their "Try Not To Sing Challenge" videos were briefly taken down in September 2018 - October 2018. All of them are up again however.
    • When you look at Laughing Challenge Playlist, there's a missing video between YouTuber's Laugh Challenge #19 and #20. It's because the original Reactors' Laugh Challenge #82 was taken down days after it was launched. The crew decides to move on and replaces it with another one.
    • As of October 2019, "Try Not To Eat - Studio Ghibli Food" was taken down due to copyright issues. It was brought back on November 2019.
  • Out of Order:
  • Promoted Fanboy: Applies for most of the YouTubers.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Naturally, all the twins that have appeared throughout the show.
    • Turns out Lia is sisters with Emma and Sammie from the earliest Kids React episodes. Who knew?
    • Royel is Darius's younger brother.
    • Athena's brother Demitri has shown up in a couple of episodes as well.
    • The Fine Brothers have their dad as one of the elders in Elders React. Their mother has also turned up, reacting to Rammstein.
    • Jennifer and Virginia from Elders React are the mother and grandmother, respectively, of YouTubers React regular Lisa Schwartz.
    • Rooster Teeth's Burnie Burns, who has appeared in two episodes of YouTubers React, also had his son Teddy in an episode of ''Kids''.
    • Tori's younger brother Nico joins the Teens cast in 2019.
    • Some of the Special Guests are Band of Relatives, such as Cimorelli and Echosmith. Speaking of which, a few of the former's non-band member siblings have guested on both Kids (Christian, Nick and Joey) and Teens (Alex). Ironically, the last two sister members from the former (Christina and Katherine) have yet to appear on the series to complete all six members appearing.
  • Recycled Set: Up until episode 22 when they finally got a new set of their own, the YouTubers appeared on the other React series' sets instead of an original set, which according to this behind-the-scenes video posted by Shay Carl, it's all one set. Neither their age or gender had an effect on what set they appear on, although returning guests got the same backdrop as before for continuity's sake. The only thing that was unique to this React series before the new set was a small YouTubers React cling covering the laptop's logo, which still appears in newer episodes.
    • Even then, we have the following sets:
      • Kids React: Originally had two separate sets for each gender, a boy's bedroom and a girl's bedroom. It was later changed to using just one elementary school classroom-styled set for both genders, which fits better with the intro.
      • Teens React: A unisex teenager's bedroom with a bunch of arrows on the wall.
      • Adults React: A modern-looking den or study.
      • Elders React: A backdrop of a living room wall that wouldn't look out of place in the early 20th Century.
      • YouTubers React: A red wall of several white-and-cyan rectangles with play symbols on them.
      • "Celebrities React" special: A Hollywood-styled backdrop with various film props, including a box of real popcorn.
      • Advice on the React Channel: A generic blue backdrop that's supposed to represent social connections online.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor:
    • Sam Pepper has been officially blacklisted by the Fine Brothers after his infamous "Fake Hand Ass Pinch Prank" video, with the duo saying that any similar behavior from other creators won't be tolerated.
    • The Fine Brothers themselves later resigned in July 2020 when former reactor Kennedy Zimet revealed and called out the Fine Brothers for racist misdemeanor after the release of the "This Is My Story|#BlackLivesMatter" video. One of the actions was Benny Fine appearing in a Shane Dawson video in blackface and other racist actions behind the scenes of the React channel itself, as well as other unfortunate projects both he and Rafi did in the past. Many reactors left the show afterward.
  • Romance on the Set: A few of the cast members have dated, notably Troy and Jillian and Eric and Tori. Mikaela also dates staff member Jack beginning 2019.
  • Schedule Slip: The first episode of the Portal playthrough came out on November 29, 2015, the second episode wasn't made and released until almost two years later on November 2, 2017, with the third, fourth, and final episodes posted one a week after that.
  • Screwed by the Network: During the "React World" fiasco, they came under even more scrutiny once it was revealed that they were preemptively taking down other reaction videos, including a Seniors React video which debuted before the more well-known Elders React did.
  • Sequel First: Elders is where Adults cast members will eventually go once they reach the age limit of 55, even though the premiere of Elders preceded Adults' by three years.
  • Those Two Guys: Any twins who appear in react videos are always reacting together or paired together in co-ops. Notably Megan and Shannon, Alisyn and Kelli, Reagan and Payton and Michael and Miracle.
  • Throw It In!:
    • Twins Megan and Shannon sometimes get sidetracked thanks to... well, each other.
    • YouTubers Goat Remix. That is all.
    • During "Teens React to the SmackCam", the teens suggest less violent alternatives and Tom comes up with 'HugCam', which they immediately do for real.
    • "YouTubers React Fart Edition" is a subversion as we do hear the Fines asking if they can do it first.
    • "Kids React to Rhett & Link" has Tyler mimicking the "Red House" refrain, which gets spun into an Overly Long Gag.
    • "Teens React to Turn Down For What" has Rumor mentioning how Lady Gaga speaking up against discrimination is never a thing in the EDM scene, leading to the Fines remixing the song with Rumor's yell of "Gay Rights Are Great!"
    • During "Teens React to After Ever After", Ethan James figures out how Jon Cozart's Self-Backing Vocalist gimmick works, leading to the Fines split-screening him to replicate the effect.
    • "YouTubers React to The Slap" leads up to Benny and Rafi stepping in to make their own version with all the guests. Complete with monochrome video!
    • "Celebrities React" has Chris Hardwick mock-venting by hurling one of the props on the set, a box of popcorn that turned out to not be a prop, and end up scattering across the set. Rule of Funny kept it in the final cut.
    • "YouTubers React to Mukbang" (eating livestreams). No doubt the temptation to do this one was overwhelming.
  • Trolling Creator: In a way. The Fine Brothers and the crews have been accused of doing this on every show, many times.
    • The YouTubers have been subjected to Rickroll, the Knife Game, and Don't Hug Me I'm Scared all in a row. They were then subjected to One Direction's "Best Song Ever", which was obviously considered torture by quite a few of the YouTubers. They were then shown "Little Baby's Ice Cream", in which Rafi actively teases Lia by pretending the creepy advert is over when it clearly isn't. In the second Oddly Satisfying Compilation, they were shown two unsatisfying videos in a row before ending the episode with bubble wrap. They were also shown oddly unsatisfying video compilation which some considered torture.
    • The teens have been shown Salad Fingers as well as Toddlers & Tiaras, and forced to play Slender, generally agreed to be one of the scariest games on the Internet, with the lights out and headphones on. Lampshaded when they were shown "Hot Problems", and Eric commented, "What did I ever do to you guys?" They would be forced to play multiple Survival Horror games in the React: Gaming series later on, most notably Outlast. And in an Advice episode Tori says she's frightened of crickets... a few months later, guess what is the first Teens vs. Food episode, and who opens it?
      • Speaking of fears, the crew sometimes conduct survey to reactors about things like their favorite songs and biggest fear without telling them what the information is for. Of course, the information is later used for future references in later episodes.
    • The children have been shown "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared" as well now. This counts for both the Fine Bros and the audience, the latter of whom got more flak as their suggestion resulted in the video.
    • The crew's creativity at pranking reactors shine through various "Try Not To Get Mad Challenges." Two prominent examples include giving adults Nutella whose lid had been glued beforehand and asking teens to eat Oreo with pickle juice, the former of which had toothpaste in it for when the crew said the teens could eat them as a form of apology for subjecting them to the challenge.
  • Troubled Production: Episodes during early-mid 2020 were done via video calls from the reactors' homes thanks to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
    • Things got even worse in mid 2020, when an expose of racist acts committed by the brothers as well as a racist video they made in the past was uncovered. This resulted in MANY reactors leaving, with some of them being longtime visitors who had been there for nearly ten years.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • A "Kids React to the Royal Wedding" was planned for the week after said event occurred, but Osama bin Laden's death two days later resulted in a change in subject matter.
    • In the video introducing Teens React, the brothers talked about other shows that were going to come soon, like Elders React and even Parents React. Evidently, the latter didn't end up working too well... but then on May 30, 2015, the Fine Bros announced Adults React, the fifth React web series, will be coming in the summer on Thursdays.
    • The Fine Brothers had a plan to create a program called React World. Unfortunately, their plans for React World involved copyrighting the concept of reaction videos. The Internet wasn't having that, and the backlash was intense enough that the entire program was canceled.
    • Both Chelsea and Becca originally auditioned for Kids React, but only joined the show as part of the Teens cast. (the latter, also doing the React to That TV show before starting online)
