Examples of The Big Damn Kiss in anime and manga.
  • Adolescence of Utena ends with Utena and Anthy passionately kissing as they drive away from Ohtori (also, they're both nude), finally free from the oppression of Akio and his schemes.
  • Ah! My Goddess: Keiichi and Belldandy. Finally in chapter 278, complete with thousands of FLOWERS bursting from the floor Thank your Goddess of choice!
  • In the manga version of AKIRA, Kei and Kaneda actually have two in the same scene. First, they sit down and kiss very gently... but after they part, they have a discussion since Kaneda believes that Kei, who's going to fight Tetsuo under orders of Lady Miyako, is doing so without regards towards her life and he leaves in a huff. She's rather dejected.... and then he returns, says he forgot something, and kisses her again, this time more passionately, and when they part he promises that he will come back to her and will stay by her side all night long.
  • Assassination Classroom: In her introductory chapter, Irina gives Nagisa a 30-hit-combo kiss so he will share his notes on Koro-sensei. Nagisa uses this lesson to give Kaede a 15-hit-combo kiss to stop her rampaging and allow Koro-sensei to remove the tentacles she implanted on herself.
  • Berserk:
  • When Eiji Asuka and Anna Stephanie finally manage to kiss at the end of the Blue Comet SPT Layzner Hallmark 2000 OAV, it's after quite the sequence where everyone rushes to meet Eiji after his return from his and Layzner's last battle, then they stop and allow Anna to take the lead. She then jumps off from a stone wall as Eiji descends from Layzner, but he's still far away. Then they run into each other's arms and look into each other's eyes. And only then, they epically smooch. With La Rose Rouge as background music. YESSSSS!
  • The two lead characters of Boarding School Juliet only kiss on the lips during their wedding (past kisses were only on the cheek by Juliet). Not only does the manga dedicate an entire splash page to that scene, it cuts to Reaction Shots of other characters, then focuses back to the couple still in lip-lock for a couple more panels. Eventually...
(Juliet starts frantically slapping Romio at the side to make him let go) "Isn't that a little too long?"
"The groom has fainted while standing!!"
  • Case Closed:
    • The series finally allows Satou and Takagi to kiss at the end of file 673./ episode 535. In the manga, the frame with the kiss takes up a little over half of the page, with a close-up of the two's faces taking up about 60% of that. And the rest of the frame is a more medium-range, full-body shot of them. In the anime, the first part of the scene is a shot with them kissing, and then the camera pans to the full-body shot.
    • Apparently Aoyama ended up liking the trope in regards to these two, since he gave Sato and Takagi another Big Damn Kiss in File 808 / episode 683. After a rather emotionally-exhausting case where Takagi is mistaken for someone else and put inside a Death Trap, and Sato goes the Violently Protective Girlfriend for him, when all's said and done she pretty much glomps him and gives him a rather epic Smooch of Victory as it starts to snow on them.
    • Later in the story, there's a rather nice one between Sato's best friend Yumi and her love interest Shukichi.
    • In chapter 1004, even when it's on the cheek, Ran and Shinichi's recent kiss is VERY MUCH framed as this.
  • Claymore: The kiss between Clare and Raki took almost two whole pages of the manga.
  • Cross Ange: Surprisingly, this happens not with Tusk and Ange, the main couple, but the Beta Couple of Chris and Rosalie, in Episode 24. As the currently evil Chris is suffering a Villainous Breakdown after Embryo abandoned her, Rosalie jumps out of her damaged Paramail to yank Chris out of her Ragnamail, and they start falling through the wartorn sky as Chris furiously demands why Rosalie is doing this. Rosalie responds by giving her one hell of a kiss and crying that she can't see a future without Chris by her side, and begs that they get back together. Hilda catches them before they hit the ground, allowing them to further reconcile and allow Chris to return to the side of good.
  • Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: After David promises to take Lucy to the moon, she gives him a First Kiss and asks him to promise that he wouldn't die on her. They soon share a longer, more passionate kiss that cements their status as an Official Couple, with the camera showing a rocket blasting off and them transporting themselves to the moon as Dawid Podsiadło's "Little Stranger" plays in the background.
  • The Dangers in My Heart: In a double subversion, Anna Yamada almost kisses Kyōtarō Ichikawa after finally confessing her love for him in chapter/Karte 113. They're still too shy for it and fumble their heads around before settling for a Head Butt Of Love instead. Then Yamada kisses him on the cheek and cheerfully runs out of the library yelling "We did it!".
    • Very much played straight in Karte 127. While attending a music show by Kyōtarō's sister Kana (with lyrics written by him) Yamada realizes that the song is a fusion of both hers' and Kyōtarō's Love Confession to each other. When she meets with Kyōtarō himself at a stairway, Yamada tearfully kisses him for real.
    • Karte 140 has Kyōtarō initiating a kiss of his own; an upside-down Spider-man style kiss while Yamada lays on the bed openly fretting about having sexual thoughts about him, and trying to to apologize for it.
  • DARLING in the FRANXX: In Episode 15, Hiro initiates one with Zero Two after they cleared up all their misunderstandings and apologized for their mistakes. This moment cements their Official Couple status and triggers Strelizia's red transformation.
  • This kiss in Destiny of the Shrine Maiden with a Humongous Mecha using its finishing move in the background.
  • Eureka Seven has three in the final three episodes, including the mid-air, upside down reunion of Dominic and Anemone in Episode 48. In the final episode, Renton and Eureka finally have their first kiss in what they believed to be the final act of their respective lives, only to be saved by Nirvash's sacrifice so that they can enjoy the third epic kiss as they float down from orbit.
  • In Excel♡Saga, in the penultimate chapter, after it is revealed that Iwata is in fact alive in every sense of the word, Matsuya gives him one of these... before proceeding to pummel him in true Matsuya style.
  • At the climax of FLCL, right after an epic fighting scene between its two participants, right before the appearance of a Physical God, and right at the middle of the song I THINK I CAN.
  • Toward the end of the Fruits Basket manga, although Kyo and Tohru share a sorta-first-kiss earlier in the same scene, it's the hug that's really climactic — at first because it means that he's finally gotten past the fact that he's possessed, but he doesn't transform. Cue montage as the curse proceeds to break.
  • The final Full Metal Panic! novel's epilogue eventually gives us the kiss we'd been promised for several books, and had been anticipating the whole series: at Jindai High's graduation, Kaname and Sousuke finally meet and he plants a long-awaited big one on her while the entire crowd cheers.
  • There are some of these in Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. The most striking ones take place between Princess Briar Rose and her Prince, and between the Action Survivor maid and the Prince from The Old Woman in the Woods.
  • GTO: The Early Years:
    • Miki kisses Eikichi after he rescues her from Yokokawa.
    • After rescuing her from Fumiya's gang, confessing his love for her, and asking her to marry him, Ayumi runs into Ryuji's arms and kisses him. It takes up a whole two-page spread.
    • Shinomi gives one to Eikichi when he's full of self-doubt after failing to save Natsu.
    • Eikichi gives Shinomi one in one of the final chapters, complete with a Wall Pin of Love. Doubles as a Now or Never Kiss/false Last Kiss, though Shinomi doesn't know it yet.
  • Inukami!: Keita kisses Youko in the climax, undeniably returning the affection she's showed him the entire series.
  • Inuyasha has one right in the anime finale when Kagome and Inuyasha are reunited inside the Shikon Jewel.
  • Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
    • At the end of the Cultural Festival, Kaguya gives Shirogane their first kiss on the roof, surrounded by hundreds of gently falling heart-shaped balloons, just after declaring that she'll abandon her family name to go to America with him. The following arc deals with the fallout of the kiss.
    • Averted with their second kiss on Christmas Eve, where they're just sitting on a park bench after having finally confessed their feelings for one another. There's no Grand Romantic Gesture, no fancy presents, no promises of being together forever, and no light but the half moon hanging in the sky. It's a perfectly normal kiss. For Kaguya, it's exactly what she always wanted.
  • Kanon. The spinning pan-out and reflective teardrop in the 2006 version make it.
  • Mazinger Z: In the Mazinger-Z vs Great General of Darkness feature, Kouji is going to sortie with Mazinger-Z to fight a battle he knows he can not win, and thinking he'll die. Sayaka stops him to give him his little brother's birthday gift, and both stare into each other's eyes for a long while... and then Kouji turns around and leaves. However, in the manga version of that moment they do kiss — the panel itself featured them floating in a void, and flower petals falling around them.
  • Being a super troupe-y shoujo manga, Marmalade Boy is no slouch regarding this trope:
    • Yuu and Miki's first kiss is set like this, and crosses into Dude, She's Like in a Coma since she had been knocked out after getting a basketball to the face in PE class. Not really, she was faking it in hopes that Yuu wouldn't tease her for being a Cute Clumsy Girl, and was totally off-guard when he smooched her instead. They later had a mutual and "proper" one in the beach (though they're standing on the sand so it's not exactly a Beach Kiss) and as the sun sets...
    • Also the deals between Meiko and Namura are properly revealed to the viewers when they share one of these in the empty library. Almost empty; Yuu sees them, but he keeps it to himself at Meiko's request. Then they have another, when Namura leaves to Hiroshima after their romance is uncovered and Meiko is willing to run away with him, but Namura immediately shoots that down to not bring her down with him, and only accepts to give her a kiss before taking off. And in the anime there's a third one when they reconcile in Hiroshima.
    • The end of the anime takes the trope to extremes, with a whole sequence featuring kisses and including those above alongside many others. It finishes with Yuu and Miki kissing while wearing bridal/groom attire.
  • Chapter 140 of Medaka Box ends with one between Medaka and Zenkichi, who have just thwarted Najimi's plan to end it all.
  • In The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, this happens in the climax of the anime's first season between Haruhi and Kyon, accompanied by an Ominous Latin Chorus, and giant monster things destroying the area around them. It's even more awesome as Haruhi is subconsciously destroying the world out of her restrained jealousy at the time and Kyon kisses her to make her undo it. It works, even though Haruhi thinks it was All Just a Dream afterwards and Kyon is in denial. And just to make it even better, the entire scene is overlaid with the first song of Mahler's Symphony No.8 Movement 1, Veni Creator Spiritus. FUCK. YES.
  • My-HiME gives us the BDK between Natsuki and Shizuru, which is so powerful, it actually snaps Shizuru out of her Psycho Lesbian phase.
  • Naruto has one of these between Naruto and Hinata at the end of The Last: Naruto the Movie—much to the delight of many fans. It doesn't get any damn bigger than a Hollywood-like First Kiss of True Love after defeating Toneri, 15 years of Ship Tease in the making, forming a Full Moon Silhouette and gracefully floating high in the air!
  • Negima! Magister Negi Magi:
    • Negi does this to Chachamaru to prove a point that Chachamaru has a soul by forming a Pactio with her. It was 4 pages long and caused an explosion. Extreme Kissing people!
    • Setsuna and Konoka's Pactio kiss was pretty damn long, too. So much that Setsuna almost suffocated from this kiss. (One doesn't know about Chachamaru, since she is a robot.)
    • Negi also does this to Luna aka Shiori. With the side-effects of undoing her Master of Disguise powers (which she used to masquerade as Asuna), saving her from being non-fatally shot by Mana, and creating a Pactio with a girl who's a member of Fate's Amazon Brigade.
    • Almost at the end of the series, Asuna gives one to Negi. Rather bittersweetly, it doubles as a Last Kiss: she's about to go into a years-long sleep so this is her goodbye to him, and she tells him to think well about who will be the next girl he'll kiss.
    • Even if not in the league of the others, Natsumi and Kotarou's Pactio Kiss was pretty epic too.
  • In No. 6, Shion kisses Nezumi halfway through the series; in the final episode, Nezumi returns the favor before he leaves.
  • Only the Flower Knows: Arikawa and Misaki's full-page kiss in a field of flowers at the end of Chapter 4.
  • Outlaw Star: Gene and Melfina have theirs at the heart of the Galactic Leyline, when he says he wants her to stay with him. But he realized he was being selfish, so he asks what *she* wants. She wishes for the same thing and said she wanted to remain herself. Then they seal it with a kiss.
  • it should be unsurprising that the kisses in REDLINE are as over-the-top as anything else. The film climaxes with two drivers winning the biggest race in the galaxy by crossing the finish-line while locked in a supersonic kiss after being ejected from their exploding car.
  • The first chapter of Sakura Trick ends with a pretty epic kiss. Haruka and Yuu go on to kiss every chapter after that, but none are quite as impressive as the first.
  • The First Kiss between the titular couple of Romeo × Juliet, complete with Romeo chasing the disguised Juliet through the streets of Neo Verona, as the Theme Song, a variation of the song You Raise Me Up plays in the background. He finally catches her on a bridge, and before she can run away again catches her hand and pulls her into an embrace, her disguise falling away and then kisses her, to which she lets her guard down and lets her feelings for him come through and kisses him back. Oh yeah, and by the way, fireworks are exploding in the background to conclude the days lovers ceremony... as Romeo's betrothed Hermione awaits for him.
  • At the end of Pokémon the Series: XY, Serena finally kisses Ash as she prepares to board her flight to Hoenn. The lighting as the two of them close in and the music adds to the atmosphere; unfortunately, it's not seen whether it was on the lips or on the cheek.
  • Played for Laughs in the Chinese cartoon, Scissor Seven. During a fight, Seven thwarts an attempt by Thirteen to grapple his hands and stab him from the side by pulling her inwards towards him. They collide and kiss, the background swaps to pink blossoms, sappy music plays, and Thirteen even pops her foot. Thirteen pulls back with a Luminescent Blush, and then rams her knee into Seven's crotch with enough force to lift him from the floor. She then wipes the kiss away and snarls at him while he collects himself. Apparently she's not a Tsundere, no, she just wants to kill him.
  • In Seraph of the End chapter 58 between Aoi and Kureto.
  • In Silver Spoon, after a Love Confession from both Hachiken and Mikage, they finally kiss in chapter 120.
  • A more tender yet equally as awesome variant happens at the climax of the second season of the Slayers anime, when Gourry, against all odds, breaks into another dimension to rescue Lina from being eradicated from existence. His fondness and desire to protect her apparently impresses the Lord of Nightmares enough to bring Lina back. They share a kiss, spinning in place amidst bubbles of light.— sadly, since Status Quo Is God, they don't recall what happened when they return to the world below.
  • Subverted at the end of Summer Wars. Kenji and Natsuki are about to kiss (at the insistence of the latter's family), only for Kenji's Psychic Nosebleed to come back. So Natsuki just gives him a small peck on the cheek instead (which doesn't help his nosebleed situation at all).
  • It's not framed by explosions (unlike everything else in the show), but Kamina and Yoko's first and only kiss in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is accompanied by erupting volcanoes... which was only matched with Yoko's second, courtesy of Kittan. "Libera Me From Hell" playing in the background just made it more epic.
  • Vampire Knight. In chapter 46, Zero reveals his affections for Yuuki this way. Before declaring that he will eventually kill her.
  • In The Movie for Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GO!GO!, we have the first kiss between Nozomi/Cure Dream and Coco, which also doubles as a "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight. It should be noted that this is the only kiss between characters in the franchise's 10+-year history.
  • You're Under Arrest! has one between Natsumi and Toukairin, after she knocks off early so she could make it to the airport before his departure. After she catches her breath, she gives him a piece of her mind for throwing their last arm-wrestling contest and and for not manning up about his feelings for her. Toukairin cuts her off with a "Shut Up" Kiss, so he can finally get a word in edgewise. Then he tells her, followed by "the big one."
  • Yuri!!! on Ice, in episode 7, after all the Ship Tease, Victor Nikiforov throws himself in the arms of Yuuri Katsuki and kisses him passionately. To add even more grandiosity, it's while they are in front of the entire audience of the Cup of China, and the kiss is televised internationally. And even more, though Victor's arm blocks it, the circumstances leading to the scene (including close-ups to Yuuri's face and Victor's mouth) and the reactions of Yuri himself plus Minako, Yuuri's family and the Nishigori family (as in, not just Yuuri's Happily Married childhood friends Yuuko and Takeshi, but also their triplet daughters) pretty much leave zero doubt that it's a kiss on the mouth.
  • In YuYu Hakusho, Keiko and Yusuke share two. The first one was a sort-of Intimate Healing since Yusuke's still sort-of dead body needed a kiss to get enough Life Energy to wake up, and due to several circumstances Keiko was the only one able to give it to him before midnight struck; she managed to do so with one second to spare and after practically dashing her way to the Urameshi household before it was too late. The second one happened at the very end of the series, when Yusuke returned home after three years in the Demon World and reunited with Keiko and his friends in the nearby beach.
  • Zero In: Mikuru and Kou in Chapter 68.
